Palmer - How effective?

🥰 Love BigFooty? Join now for free.

I think the question with Palmer is whether he would get a game if we were at full strength. Don't think he will stay at a club where is viewed as part of our depth. Pitt looks good as does Mitchie, we have Barlow, Ibbo, mzungu to come back in. Looks like Walters could play more midfield if required, so could Suban. Palmer is a genuine clearance player though and we are sadly lacking in that area.

Rewatching the game now, Palmer is really ordinary, 2 posessions to half time. Constantly in no mans land and falling over when in a contest. He was credited with some good work from VB which led to a Mundy goal.

Roved one tap in the third qtr where he was a bit better with half a dozen possessions and a good tackle.

Anyone who thinks Pav was bad, watch the game again. On a second look he is close to BOG at half time, his clearence work is unreal.

Seriously, shut the **** up. You sound like a preacher, if a bloke has issues why not talk about them.

Harves has driven this club forward by demanding the ability to hit targets.

Palmer struggles to do so.

What are you, a 12 year old?

Everyone is allowed to have an opinion, and constructive criticism. But it seems you are having a conversation with yourself here. You join a month a go and come on here bagging our players after a fantastic win.

First thought is you are a troll, probably from Collingwood.

On the topic, yes Palmer has his issues, however he is worth persisting with. He can play damn good footy.

This. Pav has such high standards, that when he's not taking contested marks/kicking goals from 50/doing the unbelievable he'll be seen as having a bad game, was awesome in the middle I thought.

He looked a little slow though, getting run down a few times and some sloppy kicks but we all know his quality, I'd rather he has a season the reverse of last year (ie start slowly and come home strongly playing your best footy in the leadup to finals*)

*Injuries permitting.

Heard alot about how we needed another ball magnet.

Do people now see that you cant carry players who cough it up and cant kick a drop punt?

I want him to get better, I really do, but he needs to refine his kicking and put together some decent footy for the Sharks.

Look at the stats gronk. Palmer isn't in our team for his 55 metre bullet passes from the wing. 1 shank, 18 touches in a half and a bit.

It's supporters like you, who ride the shit out of him, that make him a lesser player.

I dare you and the rest of your troll mates to be positive about his next home game.

The sooner our supporters realise that we destroy our own players with the "Ohhhh, ahhhh", tl;drasdf bullshit, the sooner they will accept that Palmer is actually a good player.

Stop riding our players.

It's so much ****ing easier playing a game of football when you haven't got 30,000 anchors on your back. try kicking your footy at the local park with your missus trolling you, and you'll understand what I mean.

Palmer hasn't all of a sudden got shit after 2008. He's getting shit cos you pricks put the pressure of the world on him. No man can perform under that. Get of his back, accept that EVERY SINGLE PLAYER IN THE AFL MISSES KICKS, and let him do his thing.

Emotive response aside, his stats speak for themselves.

Check yoself Sugar.

lol with these kinds of expectations, i'm not looking forward to peoples reactions if barlow isn't an elite player straight away :o

Stats are great.

I like watching how a bloke disposes the pill and how effective it is.

I make him a lesser player? Please, it's his ball drop that stops him from hitting his targets and kicking helicopters over a distance.

This is why the club has no success, too precious.

If a player does not add to a team, or his negatives outweigh the positives his spot in the side is in question.

Im glad Harves is in charge, the injuries through the middle have forced his hands early in the season. Unless Palmer can impove his decison making and disposal he will be pushed out by those who can hit targets and those who are not rushed.

I think Palmer can be made into a tagger. He's phyiscally strong and a great tackler, can run all day and knows where the ball is generally going. If he modelled himself on Clint Jones then it'd be great. His kicking isn't great, we all know that but he can still be damaging enough going the other way while taking players out the game.

Watch his u18 carnival game at subi where he kicked 5? goals. Playing Palmer as a tagger is a god forsaken waste of talent. The kid was kicking goals like they were a ****ing Royal Show stall game.

The simple fact that he was drilling 50+ metre bomb's like that on the run, tells me he's wasted doing a job that de Boer, McPhee or Crowley can do. Palmer has A grade ****ing talent (Jesus, I hate to say that considering he has no right, but I believe it). He was doing that sort of shit back in 2008, the only problem is now every single kick is under maximum pressure.

His kicking in 2008 was also not great. Yes, every now and then he can kick them great.. but as we saw last night he can still kick giant wobblers.

Isn't this part of the problem though? Just like Dodd was a handy shutdown defender for the early part of his career, then turned to shit when the zone made every decision crucial.

atleast most these stupid trolls stay away for most the preseason

Palmer is finally over the knee and away from all the nagative media scrutiny.
An starting to come back to his best.
As for handballs to people in trouble maybe it was coz when he got it he was in trouble himself.
If he clear an decides to handball to a guy in trouble like last year coz he was too scared to kick then u can complain.

Great stuff Palmer as i an a few other smart posters round here said during preseason.
Palmer will be almost back to his best again this year.

i think one of the factors people miss with palmer is how explosive he used to be. it seems most would regard him as a ball winner, but some of his best work in his first season was as a receiving outside midfielder.

average disposal aside, if he can find his pace again i think he'd start to be more effective.

Back on topic.

Just watched a replay. Palmer was very good. Certainly not in the worst 5. His start to the 3rd quarter was excellent.

Palmer was very good in close I thought - no coincidence that when he came off our drive in the clearances and midfield dropped away...
At the game we saw him trying very hard to get effective offensive possessions - which he did very well until smacked in the head by Brisbane thugs...

FWIW - I wonder (as others on here have said) if there is really a place in the same team for Lower, Palmer and Zunga...

POssies, tackles and disposal efficiency across quarters must be close to the same...

Is it becoming clear that he's just not up to it?

Against the bottom sides he'll have a good day but when the pressure is turned up he turns to shit.

I dont like to say it, but this kid is another Byron.

Bold part pretty much sums up 18-20 players we're fielding every week at the moment. You could say this about anyone. The real test will be whether we're doing well - if he also does well or still spuds it up.. For lack of a better description.

Nah, Byron is shit in the WAFL.

Palmer should be persisted with. He may not reach the heights that we had hoped but he will be a decent player.

Looks totally lost playing on a half forward flank. He's a midfielder and should play there. Thought he played really well in the Port game, then Harvey goes and parks him at HF the next week?? I just don't understand it.

Believe you mean saint kilda

Nope, I meant (and still mean!!) Brisbane - the post of mine you quoted was posted on 28 March after the Brisbane game.

Not sure why this thread has suddenly been bumped, Palmer's only issue at the moment is Harvey's foolish insistence on playing him as a half forward flanker or forward pocket instead of where he belongs, which is in the guts, as a gut busting hard running (sometimes unpolished but always having a go) midfielder.

As others have noted, Harvey leaving Palmer to freeze his arse off down at the far forward outposts of our wasteland of an attacking structure is hardly the brightest coaching move, and it is mind numbingly sad to me to watch Palms drop away in confidence, involvement in the game and impact on our side as a result.

I said as much in another post, it's almost as if he's been instructed not to get involved in the midfield. Given HF's are generally pseudo-midfielders these days it's baffling.

It is puzzling. I'm increasingly convinced he is going to GWS. I can't see any other reason for playing him this way.
