Pantera

Look, Dime was a great guitarist, there should be no argument about that. I know many great guitarists including Kerry King, Zakk Wylde, Scott Ian and Tony Iommi have said Dime was one of the greatest. The guy was very good.

Also he has left the world, the dumb red-neck comments shouldnt be there. He also didnt try and be a tough guy. That was mostly Phil Anselmo. Everything Ive heard about Dime was that he was a nice guy and he was always respectful. The guy never disrespected anyone and he is up there in terms of greatest metal guitarist, he is underrated if anything, he would wipe his a** with Kirk hammet's solos.

One band influenced all Metal Bands and that was the mighty "Black Sabbath".......... if you have not heard the 2 Navity in Black tribute albums, do yourself a favour and get them.....

In regards to Pantera were a very good band producing some classic albums (CowBoys From Hell, Vulgar Display & Far Beyond Driven)... Dimebag was a very good gutarist but definately not very original, saying he was better than Kirk Hammit is a joke. Both James and Kirk are excellent gutarists and are both very original and have changed the face of metal forever with their awesome solo's on Ride The Ligthing and Master of Puppets. :thumbsu:

R.I.P - Dimebag

You clearly don't play guitar. If you did, you'd realise that Kirk only knows about 5 different licks. And he didn't make them up, they're old blues licks. That's fine if you're a very soulful player (like Dimebag), but Kirk isn't.

You also probably didn't know that Kirk didn't play any rhythm guitar on any of Metallicas' records before the Black album. I wonder why that was? Possibly because he's a sh¡thouse rhythm player.

Dimebag was not only far more technically proficient than Kirk, but he also had a great feel, and a solid groove in his rhythm playing.

game. set. match.

there was a rivalry in the mid nineties with alot of hardcore metallica fans hating pantera because of their tag as the new metal kings. it was seen by alot of metallica fans to have crossed to the dark side to be a fan of pantera. i was once asked "how can you like metallica and pantera, you can't? 'real' metallica fans hate pantera!"
what a crock of sh*t.

the vulgar videos were a highlight for mine, i could watch them repeatedly. so many great lines from dime and phil respectably.

Thats a load of crap, kirks guitar solos are more then just "5 different licks" - what a joke.
And if you played guitar, you would notice in metallica's songs, and in most heavy metal, the second guitar is essential. Kirk hammet dosnt stand around for 75% of the song doing nothing, waiting for the solo. What is the "feel" and "groove" that Dimebag has? The boring stop start type of guitar playing? Un intersting solos?

Your a real hero mate ********ting on a dead man's legacy!

Pantera made power metal what is today!

Anyway Pantera have Influenced the likes of Disturbed,Korn(Who said a couple of years back that vulgar display of power created them!)Slipknot,Limp Bizkit(unfortunetly Durst has said on numerous occassions in magazines that pantera influenced him as well)Godsmack,Staind,Static-X and the list goes on!

So when you say Pantera haven't influenced any big bands at all it just goes to show that really have no idea what your talking about.

And far as this tough guy image is concerned i think you might be getting dime mixed up with Anselmo?

lol, pantera influencing Power metal! You sure you havnt mixed that up with Iron Maiden and Helloween?

Also Panter didnt influence Limp Bizket Korn and all those other bland and horrible "bands" you mentioned. THe like of Rage Against Machine and other Rap metal trash influenced them.
The only thing pantera influenced these bands with was the tough guy attitude.

So seriously, just how much has dimebags playing influenced people? What is his unique sound? What bands has Pantera influenced? Its no wonder today Pantera is dead and forgoten in the trash cans of music history.

The new heavy metal kings were not metallica, and they certainly were not Pantera - as pantera dumbed down the genre.
The real kings where in europe and a few in america such as Death at that time.

An interesting review of the "vulgar videos" and pantera's music in general!
http://www.michaeldvd.com.au/Reviews/Pantera3VulgarVideosFromHell.html

I" have seen some over-rated jerks in my time but Pantera would have to rank as one of the worst bands I have ever had the misfortune to see and hear. Indeed, even by the pathetically low standards of the heavy rock sub-genre, Pantera are a bunch of woefully untalented jerks. Just about every cliché you can think of in heavy rock is on display here in abundance: lousy guitar solos with no point nor purpose, lousy drumming, terrible song writing, single poor riffs endlessly repeated, excessive alcohol and/or drugs, women seemingly obsessed with displaying their chests to a bunch of strangers, it is all here. This is the sort of dross that really gives rock and roll, and especially heavy rock, an abysmal name."

Yep, thats Pantera to a T, including tough man Dimebag

This has gotten a bit ridiculous. Pantera werent talentless. Vinny Paul and Dimebag and Rex could play. Pantera wouldnt have been able to survive without Dimebag. Metallica can survive without Hammett. I think Metallica would have been just as succesful with Mustaine, I dont see Pantera ever having success without Dime. Also Dime is dead now, we shouldnt be spitting on his grave.

Hahahahahahaha.:D

Sounds like it was written by a 75 year old university lecturer than anyone who should be commenting on a metal video.

Are you serious i just gave you a list of bands that said pantera influenced them?

So i guess when those bands that said that pantera influenced them were just lying?

Mate you have an obsession of ********ting on peoples legacys.

I don't know why i even bother replying to this garbage cause its quite clear i'm not going to any sense into you.

tend to agree with you there...

i don't think they were 'that' bad. i didn't care for them, personally, but i could see how others could love them. they did seem to ALWAYS attract the 'meathead' crowd, though...

an average band. nothing too special.

i never said they were. But you'd be stupid to think there was a bigger metal act in the world at that time. Death were hardly household names.

As for the review you found...big deal. anyone can find a derogatory review of anything on the net.

You keep coming back to this thread for what reason? i've noted that you didn't like the band, you didn't feel the grooves that others here did, you didn't rate dimebag and you think more of other bands and artists.
so why you still here? you're not goin to change my mind, the people who have posted here, or the millions of fans around the world who dug them.
so give up no one is listening.

Floods and 10's are bloody brilliant, your spot on. The Suicide Notes are awesome as well. The weird kinda industrial mid-section in Living Through Me :thumbsu:

It's ok, FrankJames is being grim, necro and true :D

Seriously though, what's the point of even comparing Dime and Pantera to black metal or morons like Varg? And you're wrong about In Flames creating melodic death metal, it was At the Gates and Carcass.

It's commonly known that in terms of a commercial 90's metal bands, Pantera was one of the biggest, so it's perfectly understandable that Dime is popular. I rated Dime as a terrific song writer (you've just got to admit that he made some killer riffs) and he definitely put more time and effort into solo's (watch the making of black album video to see how lazy hammett really is). Of course there are better technical guitarists out there, but in terms of a live performance and personality - dime's got it in the "bag".

I still glad I saw Pantera the last time they toured Australia and I saw Dime play the Floods solo LIVE!

I assume your talking about The Classic Albums series, a dvd I do own and watch from time to time.

To be fair to Kirk, he didnt really get much of a look in on the DVD. Was mostly interviews and whatnot with the band, Bob Rock etc. The doco was only a short one and much of the time was taken up wiht other stuff without a focus on Hammett or Solos.

Really his only input was birefly with the initial riff on Enter Sandman and the solo for Wherever I may roam, which much of was improvised.

There are some quality solos on the album, I would have loved a more in-depth look at them. Stuff such as Through The Never spring straight to mind.

I used to listen to house music, I never really got into heavy metal until a mate gave me 'Vulgar Display of Power' to listen to. I am now a happy heavy metal fan... So I have say I'm a real-life example of being influenced by Pantera.

Pantera and Metallica (pre-Load/Reload) are both really good bands that I can go back to time and again even after having not listened to them for years. As far as being groundbreaking I dont think either of them really were in the sense of a Black Sabbath, though Metallica set the scene for 80's metal.
Metallica was to the 80's what Pantera was to the mid-90's.
As far as my favourite metal band goes (besides Sabbath obviously) Electric Wizard wins hands down. They are the kings of doom/stoner rock who have influenced countless bands and if you haven't heard of them yet (they've been around since 94) do yourself a favour.

no way, dude...eyehategod have been bigger and around for longer.

both bands are superfluous compared to the melvins, though...

is liz still in electric wizard? if i have her name wrong, the chick who was originally in '13'...

i love 13...

Yeah the Melvins kick arse. I haven't really heard eyehategod, but i've heard of them. I'll have to check them out.
Yeah Liz is still in EW, she is part of the new line-up that played the East Coast last October.
Maybe EHG have influenced more groups than EW but for mine EW have the perfect blend of distortion/feedback, downtuned bassy riffs, guitar fx, esoteric lyrics and spaced out solo's. The perfect music to accompany a bowl of weed or any other activity for that matter :D I am salivating over the thought of a new album but knowing these stoners probably wont get released til next year.

I think maybe Dimebag or possibly even all four members of Pantera ****ed his mum and 1 of them is probably his father but won’t admit it. 🤣
