Murray Newman has been quick to impress in training with his speed and agility - two attributes that could see him earn games early in his career as a small forward. The teenager has also shown clean hands in contested situations, which has encouraged midfield coach Scott Burns.
Fremantle squad member Walters and West Coast teenager Murray Newman caught the eye, but Peel maintained their impressive pre-season form by winning 15.12 (102) to 14.7 (91) at Steel Blue Oval.
Harding said Newman, West Coast's first pick and No.23 overall at last year's national draft, had played with poise in attack and in a midfield role.
"Murray only played a half but played forward, then went on ball and was very good," he said.
"He kicked a goal or two, ran hard to space, used the footy very nicely. With an AFL pre-season under his belt, I think he is going to be pretty handy for us."
Swans' ball movement was slick, with excitement machines Dayle Garlett, Jarrhan Jacky, Matthew Jukes, Marlon Motlop, Jarrad Blight, Murray Newman and Michael Walters all showing plenty to suggest they are in for big seasons.
Key forward Tim Geappen led the way with five goals but he was complemented by a vast array of young talent with AFL duo Michael Walters and Murray Newman displaying remarkable skills and Marlon Motlop and Dayle Garlett indicating that they may have futures at the highest level
Newman, 18, was charged after an incident earlier this month at the Library Nightclub in Northbridge which allegedly left a man with facial injuries so severe he needed surgery.
At Newman's first appearance in Perth Magistrates Court, lawyer Terry Dobson said he was not ready to enter a plea, as they were waiting on a report from Royal Perth Hospital detailing the alleged victim's injuries.
David Grace QC will make submissions on behalf of Newman at his next appearance.
Newman's bail was renewed, but with an alteration requested by West Coast chief executive Trevor Nisbett that Newman be allowed on licensed premises for AFL club business only.
he Eagles first to seventh-year players returned to pre-season training today with two 2km time-trials.
Newman finished dead last in both and got slower as he went, finishing in times of 8min13sec and 9min36sec according to the AFL website.
Worsfold, not noted for his pace during a 209-match playing career that ended 14 years ago, beat Newman to the finish line in both runs.
The 18-year-old was reportedly lapped in the second trial when he finished more than three minutes behind the winner, Bradd Dalziell.
The first time-trial was won by Chris Masten.
The 19-year-old has shown improvement in the last two weeks, however, and Worsfold said the club had been "rapt with his attitude and how he's going".
"He's got a big, heavy pre-season training workload that he's working through," Worsfold said on Friday.
"He's getting his volume in and getting his fitness up.
"He's got a lot of support around him.
"It's a tough time and he's got a lot to deal with.
"But he's not out there on his own, we're all supporting him and making sure we can help him through it all."
Second-year forward Murray Newman, who was thrashed by coach John Worsfold in a 2km time trial in November, is being forced to improve his aerobic capacity before he can join in full training with his teammates.
Newman jogged laps with Jamie Bennell and Blayne Wilson on Friday and was the last to leave the track as he completed a punishing cone-running drill.
The 19-year-old, who is also facing a serious charge over a nightclub incident, is likely to be mostly running for the rest of the month, away from the main group.
Actually a few of the guys redid their 2km time trial yesterday morning and Newman got his time down to 7:31. Still not that great but it’s at least an improvement on his first time of 8:13.

The final squad will be released closer to the match.
Murray Newman must pass an endurance test before being gaining West Coast's permission to return to the football field.
"That’s what Murray Newman has to do now. He’s been set some really strong targets from West Coast. He has to run a 7:05 2ker, which he should be able to do," Greg Harding said.
Newman was beaten by coach John Worsfold in two 2km time trials during November, posting 8min 13sec. and 9min 36sec.
Harding said Newman was still battling to better a target of 7:05 set by West Coast before he could be considered for a WAFL game.
"He ran it last Monday and missed it by about 12sec. and then ran it again on Friday and missed it by more," Harding said.
"7:05 is not quick and for a kid of that talent and that quality and he has got an endurance tank.
"He'll be able to run that easily, he just has to mentally prepare himself to do it and then go and run it. Hopefully we have him against East Fremantle this week."
Garlett, touted as a top-10 draft pick on talent, was overlooked in last year's AFL national, rookie and pre-season drafts amid concerns over his lifestyle.
Despite pledging to "knuckle down" in a December interview with _The Weekend West, _ Garlett arrived at Swan Districts for training last month a long way off the club's fitness standards.
Harding said the 19-year-old had the potential to be a 200-game AFL player but, like Newman and Walters, needed time to mature.
