Re: XX. Murray Newman (Yet to debut)

First update on Newman :)

From all reports is running well and is impressing with his skill level. Chance to snag a few games early this year.

From this article, there is a small piece on Newman. Here it is quoted in full.
Murray Newman has been quick to impress in training with his speed and agility - two attributes that could see him earn games early in his career as a small forward. The teenager has also shown clean hands in contested situations, which has encouraged midfield coach Scott Burns.

Re: XX. Murray Newman (Yet to debut)

Some news on Newman finally. Some quotes from this link

Fremantle squad member Walters and West Coast teenager Murray Newman caught the eye, but Peel maintained their impressive pre-season form by winning 15.12 (102) to 14.7 (91) at Steel Blue Oval.
Harding said Newman, West Coast's first pick and No.23 overall at last year's national draft, had played with poise in attack and in a midfield role.

"Murray only played a half but played forward, then went on ball and was very good," he said.

"He kicked a goal or two, ran hard to space, used the footy very nicely. With an AFL pre-season under his belt, I think he is going to be pretty handy for us."

Re: XX. Murray Newman (Yet to debut)

Thanks for the info, great to hear.

Other than Darling no one excites me more than Murray Newman and what he brings to our team.

Re: XX. Murray Newman (Yet to debut)

Great to see Newman getting some game time:thumbsu:

Nothing special just yet but got these two quotes from two different articles.

Here is the first link
Swans' ball movement was slick, with excitement machines Dayle Garlett, Jarrhan Jacky, Matthew Jukes, Marlon Motlop, Jarrad Blight, Murray Newman and Michael Walters all showing plenty to suggest they are in for big seasons.

And the second link here
Key forward Tim Geappen led the way with five goals but he was complemented by a vast array of young talent with AFL duo Michael Walters and Murray Newman displaying remarkable skills and Marlon Motlop and Dayle Garlett indicating that they may have futures at the highest level

So as you can see not much there but good to see he has great skills:thumbsu:

2012 has been a mixed year for Newman.

After beginning the season playing for WAFL side Swan Districts it did not take long for Newman to show is ability with a 24 possession 3 goal game in just his second league match for the season.

Despite slightly inconsistent possession tallies throughout the season Newman regularly displayed a capacity to hit the scoreboard, ultimately resulting in 24 goals from his 16 league matches, with only two where he failed to score at all.
The highlight of Newman’s season in the WAFL was a 5 goal 29 possession game in the middle of the season.

Within a month Murray was fortunate enough to debut for the West Coast Eagles in the round 14 match against the Gold Coast with a return of 2 goals 2 behinds and 13 possessions.

Newman played out the next three games in the seniors with little success, however this was largely due to the limited game time inherent to wearing the sub vest and the poor performance of the team as a whole over the period.

After playing out the season back with Swan Districts, where he played in both the semi and the preliminary final, Newman found himself in hot water during the off season.
Newman, 18, was charged after an incident earlier this month at the Library Nightclub in Northbridge which allegedly left a man with facial injuries so severe he needed surgery.
At Newman's first appearance in Perth Magistrates Court, lawyer Terry Dobson said he was not ready to enter a plea, as they were waiting on a report from Royal Perth Hospital detailing the alleged victim's injuries.

David Grace QC will make submissions on behalf of Newman at his next appearance.

Newman's bail was renewed, but with an alteration requested by West Coast chief executive Trevor Nisbett that Newman be allowed on licensed premises for AFL club business only.

Significantly, the bail conditions state that Newman is not allowed into any nightclub amd not allowed on any licensed premises after 11:30 pm.

The matter was adjourned to January 25.

Upon his return to pre season training the bad news continues for Newman, being beaten by Woosha in two 2km time trials.
he Eagles first to seventh-year players returned to pre-season training today with two 2km time-trials.
Newman finished dead last in both and got slower as he went, finishing in times of 8min13sec and 9min36sec according to the AFL website.
Worsfold, not noted for his pace during a 209-match playing career that ended 14 years ago, beat Newman to the finish line in both runs.
The 18-year-old was reportedly lapped in the second trial when he finished more than three minutes behind the winner, Bradd Dalziell.
The first time-trial was won by Chris Masten.

Thankfully, Woosh is a top bloke and is willing to support Newman during these tough times
The 19-year-old has shown improvement in the last two weeks, however, and Worsfold said the club had been "rapt with his attitude and how he's going".
"He's got a big, heavy pre-season training workload that he's working through," Worsfold said on Friday.

"He's getting his volume in and getting his fitness up.

"He's got a lot of support around him.

"It's a tough time and he's got a lot to deal with.

"But he's not out there on his own, we're all supporting him and making sure we can help him through it all."

Hopefully, 2013 proves to be a better year off field for Newman, while continuing his promising performances on game day.

UPDATE!

Second-year forward Murray Newman, who was thrashed by coach John Worsfold in a 2km time trial in November, is being forced to improve his aerobic capacity before he can join in full training with his teammates.

Newman jogged laps with Jamie Bennell and Blayne Wilson on Friday and was the last to leave the track as he completed a punishing cone-running drill.

The 19-year-old, who is also facing a serious charge over a nightclub incident, is likely to be mostly running for the rest of the month, away from the main group.

Sources infinitely more reliable than the Hsun have attested to the efforts of Newman:

Actually a few of the guys redid their 2km time trial yesterday morning and Newman got his time down to 7:31. Still not that great but it’s at least an improvement on his first time of 8:13.

Championship Data say:

Murray Newman – FWD
In his first year with the club Neman made his debut in round 14 and was involved in a substitution in three of his four games. Playing 16 matches for Swan Districts in the WAFL, he wasn’t a huge ball-winner, averaging 14 disposals, but he booted 24 goals – ranked fifth at the club – including a bag of five leading to his AFL debut. He has played 24 senior matches in the WAFL across the past two years, averaging 14 disposals per game and booting a total of 31 goals.

Although the date of his court date has come and gone without any news, Murray has been named in an initial squad of 40 ish for the 2013 Indigenous All-Stars in their game next Friday night against Richmond. Congratulations Murray!

Seemed to play half forward when he was on the ground in the All Stars match. Didn't a heap of the ball, probably 8-10 touches, although game time appeared limited. Did kick 1 goal in the last quarter, could have had one earlier however passed it to Motlop who missed the set shot.

Was the best performed of the 3 Eagles.

Stil hopeful of a run in the shortened NAB cup games.

Bad news: Murray has not been named in the squad to play in round 1 of the NAB cup on 16th Feb.

Good news: This is not because of any injury that has been made public and is more likely just because he has a bit of work to do Re his fitness and the time will be better spent making his pre season longer than playing a couple of short games.

He also has already had a bit of a hit out last week in the All Stars match.

Still no word on how his police matters are proceeding, if nothing happens for another 6 years at least he wont be sued by the alleged victime.

Murray gets a mention during Woosh's presser this week, @4:25 ish.

Summary:
Still not full time training with the main group, "still got some things he has to adress in terms of being back in full time training with the whole group"
Wont play in the NAB Cup :(
The club applied for him to be transfered from Swan Districts to East Perth (who will be the clubs reserves side from 2014) however this was rejected by the WAFL.

Woosh said the change of clubs would "suit Murray more" if it had have gone ahead, but he expects SD to support Murray in the way the club wants him supported.

Court matter not mentioned, fair to assume we have paid the umpires off and they have droped the case file behind the filing cabinet at the Court/police station.

Murray Newman must pass an endurance test before being gaining West Coast's permission to return to the football field.

"That’s what Murray Newman has to do now. He’s been set some really strong targets from West Coast. He has to run a 7:05 2ker, which he should be able to do," Greg Harding said.

Newman was beaten by coach John Worsfold in two 2km time trials during November, posting 8min 13sec. and 9min 36sec.

Fair bit to knock off, increase from around 15kmph to about 17 kmph, but when considering guys like Masto can get low 6's (almost 20kmph) it's reasonable.

Good on the club for standing strong on this one, if Murray gets there at least it proves the effort is there.

I`m hopeful that Murray can dig deeper and meet the requirements placed upon him by the club It would be wonderful if he could build the tank to play around the midfield..

ALSO
good work harry very informative thread ..

He did it!!!! Almost......

http://au.news.yahoo.com/thewest/sport/a/-/wafl/16373447/harding-keeps-faith-in-garlett-newman/

Harding said Newman was still battling to better a target of 7:05 set by West Coast before he could be considered for a WAFL game.
"He ran it last Monday and missed it by about 12sec. and then ran it again on Friday and missed it by more," Harding said.
"7:05 is not quick and for a kid of that talent and that quality and he has got an endurance tank.
"He'll be able to run that easily, he just has to mentally prepare himself to do it and then go and run it. Hopefully we have him against East Fremantle this week."

Good on him for that effort though, running a 7:17 is alot better than the 8:13 from November. Hope he cracks it soon.

Article goes on to say or how his friend is in a similar state

Garlett, touted as a top-10 draft pick on talent, was overlooked in last year's AFL national, rookie and pre-season drafts amid concerns over his lifestyle.
Despite pledging to "knuckle down" in a December interview with _The Weekend West, _ Garlett arrived at Swan Districts for training last month a long way off the club's fitness standards.
Harding said the 19-year-old had the potential to be a 200-game AFL player but, like Newman and Walters, needed time to mature.

Played in Round 1 WAFL. No word on whether this was because he ran the 7:05 2km or because the club just allowed him to.

SWAN DISTRICTS 1.4 7.6 9.12 13.15 93
EAST FREMANTLE 4.1 8.4 8.5 12.10 82
GOALS - SWAN DISTRICTS: Geappen 6; Newman 4; Hildebrandt 2; Cameron.
EAST FREMANTLE:
Duffy, Peake 3; B O'Brien 2; Perham, Boyle, MacDougall, Symonds.

BEST - SWAN DISTRICTS: Hildebrandt, Geappen, Roach, Neale, Jetta, Twomey.
EAST FREMANTLE: Duffy, Brown, Howlett, Dalziell, R O'Brien, B O'Brien.

16 disposals for 4.2 with 3 tackles is a great return for a kid who looked to be at the cross roads a few months ago.
