Apologies if this has been covered before (couldn't be bothered searching:o).

I've always been curious as to how strong the support for the club is from past players. The majority of them I'm guessing originally barracked for other teams but I assume for many their allegiance changed after playing for a particular club. So what happened once thay stopped playing? Do they remain as bulldogs supporters or return to the club they supported in their pre VFL/AFL days?

Who do you see regularly at bulldogs games (I often see Peter Foster) and do we have a strong past players contingent at the club?

I've seen Peter Foster a few times - had a HUGE swollen ankle.

would the older players more likely have been Bulldog supporters due to selection being highly zone based in the earlier days, whereas now you can come from anywhere the chances you support another club are more likely?

Perhaps so...although lots of instances (even today) where people living in the western suburbs don't follow the bulldogs.

I'm actually more interested in knowing what level of support the club enjoys from past players regardless of their pre-career allegiances. Not so much from a formal involvement with the club (although that would also be of interest) but simply as a supporter sitting in the stands.

l am an associate member of the Bulldogs Past Players and from what l can see we have fairly good support from the past players. (Longgest running Past Players in AFL)

We have the small room next door to the Victory Room where the past players can meet and have a drink prior, during and after the game.

l have been a member for about 4 years now and from what l see we get mostly the older past players (mid 70's back) using the room.
We did have a special occasion in 2008 where alot of recently retired players attended.

l think as the past players get older and have less family commitments and a bit more time on there hands you will have them coming to more games.

...and bringing their children along:)

After hearing a few ex players speak at a past player lunch last year it appears to be more of their kids playing sport and life just being to busy.

l think it was Beasley who said he looks forward to take life easier (retirement?) in the future and meeting up with past players and having a drink with them at the game.

Hi everyone,

I am undertaking a PhD and am on the search for some data, specifically player positions. Most of this info is easily accessible however, finding player positions for players drafted in the early-mid nineties and who either didn't play a senior game or didn't play many has proven quite difficult!

I am using quite broad positional categories (mid, fwd or def) and while many players are moved around various positions I am looking for the position where they spent the majority of time. Please see below a list of Western Bulldogs past players who I need positions for. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you

Courtney

I think you mean Brad Nicholson.

What's your criteria for "not many"?

Peter Quill would have played close to 100 games? Same with Simon Cox.

I think there was a book from the nineties titled 'Every Game Ever Played' that listed player positions in every game from around 1995 earlier. Might be worth a look.

What is the focus of your PhD, out of interest? Also where at? Sounds like something some people around here would be interested to hear about.

Aloi, Anthony
Solomon, Jay
West, Mark On baller, who was one of the culprits of the 97 PF fade out. Streaming into open goal tried to bomb from 40 rather than run all the way in and goal.... he missed.
Campbell, Paul
Campbell, Tony Key defender with a couple attempts as KF Played mostly as a FB
Harvey, Rodney
McInnes, Brian
Moylan, Matthew
Pickering, Justin
Rundle, Jamie
Ryan, Damian
Allen, Scott
Copeland, Brad
Cox, Simon Running tall defender
Flavell, Dylan
Johnson, Brad
Koster, Kym Rover Successful SNAFL player recruited as a rover
Martin, Mick On baller / small forward. Muscle bound small
Phillipou, Sam On baller / small forward.
Quill, Peter Remember him as a back flanker
Sir, Sedat Slim running type, not sure we really found his niche (if he had one )
Taylor, Scott
Colbert, Brent
Thompson, Iszac

You have a heap of players on the list who were not around long enough to be "classified" in a position. Some of them I don't even recognise, so of top of head can't help a lot.

Mark West could have been a cult hero, shame his body couldn't hold up. One of my favourite players in the 1997 season

Bloke could have also been a club legend, were it not for a sprayed shot at goal.
