Let me tell you, when Paul Hudson first came to the Western Oval in his little Red MG back 1997, i was pleased that we actually had a forward line who could kick goals (along with his cuz).

At one stage at the Western Oval after training, i had a go at him about a little disrespectfulness towards a young female supporter.

For three years i admired him as a footballer, couldn't stand him as a person.

This year, a group of us supporters started off a little game, where i, would do something stupid if Huddo kicked 10 in a game. Never happened (8 was his best). Then i got tired of waiting for him to kick 10, so instead it was decided that i would drink shots of Tequilla for each goal he kicked...

Anyway, the moral to my story. I am very sad to see Paul Hudson leave the Western Oval. Through my own stupidity, i have devoloped a fondness for this great forward, and for someone that for 3 years i didn't care much for, i am very disapointed that we didn't get one more year out of Hungry Hungry Huddo.

I know some of you are happy to see him go, but myself, am disapointed.

Good Luck Huddo.

Sorry to butt in on you all, but I was hoping you fellows might be able to provide me with a little background info.

On the various Richmond boards around the place there has been much gnashing of teeth about trading a third round pick for Hudson. Do think that Richmond has stuffed up here?

Personally, I have never rated Hudson much - I know he kicks goals but I reckon he doesn't do enough of anything else (This is probably my defender's bias, being an ex-full back). Having said that, I always considered him a danger-player - one who the Tigers had to shut down in order to win.

With that in mind I don't know if this is a good thing for Richmond, so I am hoping you guys can tell me a little about him, like:

- Do you think he has any good years left?
- Is he any kind of loss to the Dogs?
- Are you happy with the trade?
- What else can you tell me about Hudson?

Thanks in advance.

Well, i know a few will disagree with me on this, but i think its a big loss for the Western Bulldogs. I consider Hudson to be one of the best pocket players in the league. He has the ability to kick goals when you need them most, and from the freakish kicks.

He had a slightly bad season by his own admission in the sense that he didn't kick a whole lot of goals, which is what he was there for.

However, this season, i saw something in Huddo that I hadn't seen before. A willingness to play a team game (came 4 years too late, but what can you do). There were times this year when he be up field getting the ball, not hanging in the forward line waiting.

I saw him tackle more that i had seen him do. Although he is a little slow, he certainly added another dimension to his game this year.

The bottom line is, with Paul Hudson in your team, you will always take a quality backman to cover him, as he has the ability to turn a game on its head.

I feel that if Huddo had got one more year in with the Doggies, he would have retired next year. I think that with a new team, you will get two out of him.

His kicking did let him down this year. He only kicked 40 goals, with nearly as many behinds, but like i said, you need a quality backman to cover him.

Huddo will be a good pick up for Richmond, and leaves a vacent foward pocket for the Bulldogs.

Does this help at all?

G'day TT,

PC28 has summed it up well.

I reckon he'll be a big gain for you guys. He was a little flat in his last year with us, but given the "i'm in a new environment/this is my last chance - gotta work my arse off now" tendency of players his age swapping clubs, I reckon he'll be a solid performer for the next two years for Richmond -- Given your forward line, if he plays the full 22 games, you will definitely get at least 40 goals out of him... which could be the added dimension you guys need to genuinely challenge for the flag over the next two seasons.

My reaction? A quality player who I rate very highly -- and as i said on the main board -- we're not in a position to be letting those go. There's a thread that I started a couple of weeks back, thinking that he was about to retire , so you can see some people's thoughts on him there.

In regards to the trade -- I thought we were pretty lucky to get a third round pick for him, especially when considering he was close to retirement -- but I can understand Frawley paying that kind of price, as Huddo will slot in to your forward line perfectly, just until one of either Krakour or Pettifer can put on a bit of muscle and be consistent performers in that role.

- If he had continued with us, one more year at most. I think he's a significant loss, given where we are at. Wallace probably disagrees... but what would he know? :D
- Happy to get a third round pick for him, but a fourth round pick would have probably been too little for a player of his calibre(hope that makes sense) -- Not happy with what we ended up doing with that pick though.
- Gun who can damage the opposition with only a handful of possesions -- used to NEVER miss, but towards the end of his time with us, fell away from that high standard -- sometimes his application can be questioned, but like PC pointed out, he improved a lot with that aspect of his game last year, and will improve further next year with you guys. Will kick a goal from 50 out on the boundary line after the siren to bury us in our match againt you next season.

Cheers

You must be over the moon, TT -- keep Holland, Gaspar, Hilton, Rogers -- get rid of (and get something in return for!) Daffy and Bourke .... sheesh. ;):D

Thanks WB,

Over the moon? Not quite, but not unhappy either.

Hudson feeding off some of those talls at Richmond spells trouble for a lot of teams. He has the most amazing ability to peel of a pack and find space. Invariably the ball finds him. His goal instinct is matched by few in the league even in his twighlight years.

He hammered 8 against the reigning premier this year. ;)

OH NO, NOT THAT POST!!!

Tell you what, if he kicks the goal that wins the game for Richmond next year i will cry.

I myself think this sums him up better than anything. He is the best player in the league in a position that as a specialist is basically obsolete. Can you imagine the damage Robert Murphy could do running off him in a Back Pocket?

Did you hear anyone say "Sig, we need your thoughts on this"?

No, so be quiet and speak only when spoken too. :p

Well, TT, I'm not at all happy about the loss of Huddo. Sure, a mediocre season by his standards, but still kicked more goals than "superstar" Jeff Farmer. Does that surprise you? I wrote a little thread on Huddo about a month ago comparing Huddo and the Wizard over a FOUR year period. Interesting stuff.

I figure he's good for at LEAST two years if treated with kid gloves. He does not rely on speed, and tackling has improved, as PC28 says. He relies on his rat-cunning, and will tear a few teams apart who won't give him respect, you just watch.

It was interesting to note he thinks he has 4-5 years left, and he was not joking.

Not happy, Jan.

Huddo is a genius around goals. If little Robbie Murphy ran away from him he'd be down the other end happily slotting through goal after goal. And forward pocket is not an obsolete position. You win games by kicking goals, which Huddo does. Statistically, hes probably the best small forward of the last decade.

Im gonna miss Huddo. he was a BRILLIANT pick-up for us and I don't know if we should doubt him about 4 or 5 more years. He was completely gone when we picked him up and he kicked 200 goals for us and made the All-Australian team. I hope he makes us look like a fool, coz he was one of my favourite players. I met him a couple of times and I thought he was a top bloke (though this goes without saying, look at his cousin, the friendliest footballer of all time)

Huddo is a legend. Sad thing he had to join those bastards at Richmond (Leon excluded, another legend) I wanted him to finish his career with us and be remebered as a Dog, not a Hawk

I hope he kicks 60 next year

Blast from the past, but great thread.

Two stay at home mid-sized - small forwards who were excellent value for the dogs were Paul Hudson & Les Bamblett.

And I notice the mention of the "cousin" Hudson and Simon Minton Connell were cousins weren't they ?

A modern day link up to todays team and those guys is, that it was Simon Minton Connell who convinced Dale Morris that he was good enough to seek an AFL rookie position.

I think he has the stat for the most amount of goals in the AFL history kicked as half foward flanker.

One of very few players to play 100 games and kick 200 goals for 2 clubs...also one of the very few non-key forwards to average more than 2 goals a game.

Paul Hudson was probably the best set shot I've seen pull on a jumper[for us]

I remember in round 20, 2000 he kicked a goal from the boundary line against Collingwood. It was the same pocket where Chris Grant kicked that goal v Esssendon just a week later (bring back memories anyone?).

It was late on & this goal sealed a win. He caressed it through, you just knew it was as gun barrel straight as any kick ever was despite the tight angle & being on the wrong side for a right footer.
