Woah, even in the media and stuff?
That's insane, I assumed there's been money in it since at least the 70's.

You have to remember that until the 90's the game was still Victorian based pretty much. Almost all players had to have day jobs.

love reading the stories from paul salmon....

he reckons he used to pick vanders up and drive him to the game, he would come to the car with a cigarette in his mouth and rest a plate of bacon and eggs on his knee and eat it on the way in.

respect.

I love the story about how he used to go to the local fish&chip shop near Windy Hill before a game and order a hamburger with the lot and play the pinball machines.

Once he was very late for the start of the match because he refused to budge untill he used up all his free games that he'd racked up on one of the pinnies.

Or the old classic when he rocked up to Sheed's house to have a chat when KS first started as coach and turned up at his door with a few tall bottles of beer under his arm...

Regular at The Chevron - late 70's to the mid 80's - early in the week - Drink about 15 beers in one of the corners of the bar - Always with a few guys - Had a drink with him on a couple of occasions.

Nice bloke who was focused on beer.

the only media back then was The Age, The Herald & The Sun newspapers & the tv coverage on Saturday & Sunday afternoon which would show highlights from the 3rd & 4th quarters. no current VFL players had any hand in the media, unless they were the ones being interviewed.

Essendon only had one sponsor at a time throughout Van Der Haar's career. Dons Small Goods chipped in a couple of thousand a year and the Bombers wore a small badge on their guernsey in return. probably covered the electricity bill at Windy Hill.

Love the old Vander stories, rocking home at 3am on a Saturday morning and dominated on a Saturday arvo.

I see quite regularly through work and he's still in resonable nick

The concept of sports stars being millionaires is a very new one in Oz, been around a bit longer in the States...

And the reality is that most guys won't get rich out of playing AFL even now, only the top 5% make it "big" whilst a lot never even make it to a game.

I think last year the average AFL wage was $135,000 (which is great money but you may only earn that for the average of 1.8 years).

Irrespective of the wage, some guys will blow it no matter what they get paid.

Vander is a great story teller..

No, it's almost twice that, will pass 300k by the end of this rights deal.

Sorry the figure came out that 'excludes' the top 10 contracts in the league.. essentially to highlight that the majority earn far less than what is anticipated. I should have been clearer.

A bit like the Aussie average wage being around $64K however you take out the top 1% of earners and suddenly it drops to a more realistic figure of around 52K a year. Essentially a million dollar wage earner severely distorts the figures for a 'mean' average..

But not going to argue because I don't really care, I think my point that it has only become highly highly lucrative relatively recently still stands.
