I may be a little biased as Cornes has yet to play a good game against the Lions, and we play Craig Bolton on him (..who probably won't be on our list next year), but Cornes is nowhere near the Ottens and Tarrant class. He wouldn't get a kick if the best defender played on him, and from the games I've seen does a lot of his work when the game has already been won or lost.

Gets the best fullbacks every week, Tarrant and Ottens do not.

Cornes 207 kicks, 74 handballs, 118 marks, 26 goals
Tarrant 115 kicks, 51 handballs, 68 marks, 32 goals
Croad 143 kicks, 30 handballs, 60 marks, 36 goals
Ottens 131 kicks, 101 handballs, 84 marks, 24 goals

Cornes is better than Tarrant and Croad, Ottens is a bit unfair to gauge because he plays in the ruck more but when he plays forward Cornes is better than him aswell.

The reason we took Croad is that we (thought we) needed a key defender. Cornes, good player that he may become, was too slight and not suited for a defensive role.

Cornes is actually suited to a defensive role, we would play him there if D.White hadn't been injured this year.

Fletcher is slight but is probably the best defender in the league, the main reason the Hawks took Croad was because they wanted an enforcer which was the same reason they traded him when they found out he was soft. No doubt he is a big kid but he doesn't have that killer instinct to go round cleaning players up, he fits into the chubby key position role such as L.Brown and L.Whitnall but doesn't do it as well as they do.

... which is what most clubs tend to spend their first round picks (and third overall picks) on.

What a load of absolute drivel.

I was talking about Croad as opposed to Cornes, Croad was being primed to be a bullocking enforcer from the day he arrived at Hawthorn with Brereton befriending him immediately.

When it was found out he wasn't that sort of player he was traded.

He was traded because:

- he didn't/wasn't following team rules;
- he had a high salary that was not in proportion to his output;
- we perceived that we had enough talls; and
- we were short of midfielders and wanted to pick up the best one we could get, via the number one draft pick.

I may know a tiny bit more about this situation than you. Maybe.

team rules?
cut his salary then
enough talls, wrong there then hey?
midfielders, granted that was the main reason

But the decision came down to the fact that Croad wasn't turning into the player Hawthorn was expecting him to.

Well if we get headland from the lions next year well have the 1st 2nd and 3rd picks from the 98 draft :)

This has probably become apparent from the subsequent post naming options the Hawks could have drafted instead of Croad, but just to clarify completely...

Croad was the 3rd pick in the 1997 draft (behind Travis Johnstone and Brad Ottens).

The 1998 draft top 3 was Headland (who you covert), Longmuir (who you have) and Fosdike (with Sydney).

Well you better start losing some more games, cos the Lions will be wanting an extremely low draft pick and a player aof the grover ilk. Also got a feeling that they would be prepared to make him go into the pre-season draft and let Carlton have him for nothing rather than take an ordinary trade.

I'd be very surprised to see Headland leave Brisbane. I know he's said he's homesick but this tends to wear off when

a) you get older
b) you are a regular in the team and playing good footy
c) you are a member of the best team in the competition

Based on his form in the last couple of months, if I were the Lions management Headland would be my second priority player (after only Voss). If they run into salary cap problems there are many players they should be prepared to risk losing before Headland IMO.

IMO we'll look back in 10 years time and say that Hawthorn easily won that trade (but bombed out badly on losing McPharlin for pick 26, but that's another story).

I wouldn't for a second consider giving up pick 1 for Croad, and this is a weaker draft than last year.

You cannot simply break it down like that.
Fremantle would never have traded 1st pick for Croad.
They offered 3rd pick.
Hence when discussing the deal you must talk in terms of Croad & McPharlin vs Hodge (2 picks in there 20's).
Looking back I think you will find that McPharlin will be one of the guns of the game.
A Hay type player that can play either end of the ground and dominante.
With Croad though not setting every game alight playing a great support role to the likes of Longmuir/Polak/Waterhouse/Headland (if we get him).

Are both Lonies soft, or is it just the Hawthorn one?

I dont think Ryan is soft, hes definately not a tough back flanker, but ive never seen him back out or hesitate at a contest.
He got away to a great start to his career, but this year he hasnt lived up to expectations, probably because hes getting a bit more attention from opposition sides.
He will be a good player.

I agree that McPharlin will be a star, and when you combine the trades then Freo might just win out. If I could be assured of McPharlin's fitness I'd almost take him at Carlton ahead of Pavlich. The kid really impresses me.

Ill admit it I have jumped on the mcpharlin bandwagon.
I cant quite work out what about mcpharlin sets him apart.

I mean he doenst have the strenght, aerobic capacity or long kick of Pavlich.
Nor does he have the mark of waterhouse or longmuir.

There is just somthing about him.
And he is a FREO BOY :) who I see regulary at the local clubs and seems hes over the moon to be home.
So he sure as hell aint going no where

I agree that Headland should be a high priority pick, however if we were to lose him we would want something pretty major. If a 31 year old Wayne Carey is worth a top 5 draft pick and good player, then a 22 year old Des Headland would easily be worth the equivalent!

IMO if the Lions strike salary cap problems, then Keating and Notting are in the firing line.

I'd be prepared to trade almost any player on the Swans list if we could get our hands on Headland. There are very few I'm keen on trading for Carey (though I fear the club might think differently!) In my mind there is no comparison on who is more valuable - and its not WC!

However, if it wasn't for useless bloody Melbourne and their useless bloody concessions, we would have had the second pick.

Mmm, Ottens.

Club stated at the time (read into it what you will, though I tend to believe it) that even if we had had the no.1 pick it would have been used on Croad.

As you said, at the time he was what was required. I still say his best possie is CHB.

There was a contest (I think 2nd Q) where he and Lekkas were both heading towards each other and the ball. No doubt in my mind Ryan put in some short strides.

Ours is just as bad on occasion too. One thing though I think both should be given time. 2nd year players and (don't know about the Woods one but will take PP's word for it) that they can become good footballers if they want it bad enough. Only noticed it at the time as I wondered if it (jibbing) ran in the family.

Nathan did jib a couple of contest's Friday for us too. He also went in very hard at times as well.

My boy Hairy was hardly known for it when he was elsewhere and this year... well geez.. different player! :)

Give him time DCFC, he is doing okay (imo) at the minute.

Cheers.

Do you think Carlton can give Ryan Houlihan the same "time".

Actually there is only one Lonnie - well originally at least. Playing two games a week does make it hard to throw yourself at the contest continually. When they are both at the same what is a kid supposed to do? Line himself up and knock himself out?

Looks like Channel 9 is undergoing a revamp. Pavlich and Carey joining Channel Ed!

is buckley retiring 25 minutes on the bench and now this,

trevor marmalade will have to quit too after his carey pokie jokes.

now you cant tell me this is not outright abuse of eddies position at channel 9, to think theyd do this but not secure the final series for themselves:eek:

pretty simple really they are abusing thier ownership of the tv rights so they can pay playrs without it affecting thier salary caps not all clubs have this bargaining tool

?? So who is being payed what by whom to do what exactly? You are commenting on something that a Bigfooty poster says as if it were fact. Has it ever happened before? Is Buckley on the Footy Show as part of his Collingwood contract? Or his he there because he captains the club with whom the medial is most obsessed and is one of the best players of his era? Bear in mind Collingwood are UNDER the salary cap in any case. These stupid theories are all based on if CFC or Eddie did x when in fact they have not.

I actually understood what you meant in that bit but the rest had me beat. The Buckley bench and finals series bits have me confused I'm afriad.
