As both players careers draw to a close within the next couple years, who has been the better player?

Pavlich : 6 All Australians, 6 club champions

Goodes: 4 All Australians, 2 Brownlow Medals, 3 club champions

The accolades tell most of the picture. Pavlich, a resilient and consistent player and Goodes the more explosive however more inconsistent

Definitely Goodes for me. I bet someone will disprove this with some sort of stat, but Pav to me just doesn't step up in the big moments like the other superstars do. Goodes does special things all the time but he particularly stands up in the big moments in the finals and whatnot. He nearly dragged the Swans over the line in 06 with his last quarter effort.

On a game by game, season by season basis, I wouldn't discredit anyone for picking Pavlich. But if I want to win big games, i.e premierships, Goodes is my man.

Goodes by some margin. Pavlich is great player who has played well in both midfield and as a forward, but Goodes can play everywhere, won a Brownlow playing ruck and another as a midfielder,is a big game player and is arguably the 2nd best among the active players after Ablett. Pavlich is though probabaly the 2nd best Utility in the game after Goodes.
If one were to select a team of best active players over their career form, both would get in though.

I'll put them both as a draw. From what I've seen over the few years, they appear to have the same influence on the field.

Matthew Pavlich finals record:
14.8 disposals/ game
2.8 goals
0.9 clearances
2.3 tackles
2 contested marks

Adam Goodes:
18.65 disposals/game
1.08 goals
3.26 clearances
2.5 tackles
1.26 contested marks

Probably the stats you would expect with Goodes playing more midfield and having a high impact per possession whilst Pavlich playing as a KPF in pretty much all freos finals games. Not much separating them IMO, although Goodes has done it over 23 finals compared to 11.

Both great leaders, both legends of the game, both have gathered a lot of honours and awards. I can't split them, it's a draw.

I'd take Pavlich any day of the week.

Pav has been a great player, but Goodes on song is another level altogether. Can ruck well (not just pinch hit), win the ball, runs like a midfielder, take big marks and make big kicks up forward.

Absolute gun, Nataniu would be the closest player in terms of style/ athleticism. Goodes is probably the best/most versatile ruck in the AFL in the last 20 years.

I see Goodes is as overrated by Bigfooty as he is by the umpires:rolleyes:

Pavlich for me. Just as versatile and has performed at a consistently high level for more seasons. If Harvey had allowed him to play as a forward instead of running him into the ground in the midfield for about 3 seasons in his prime years, he could well be on 9-10 All-Australians by now. And contrary to what some others in this thread have said, he does have a good record in big games, its just that he hasn't played in as many as Goodes.

Goodes. Would have loved either in navy blue. Both champions of their respective clubs. Goodes' ability to be a damaging mid wins it for me.

Goodes. Only behind Ablett for the best player since the turn of the century IMO.

But ruined by playing in the midfield for three years in his prime?

He has excelled all over the ground, was an AA defender in 2002, rotated between the midfield and half forward line in 2003 (again AA), won multiple AA's as a forward. He has absolutely dominated teams from the midfield at times, but he was always more suited to bursts in the midfield rather than a fulltime role.

Voted goodies, have some very fond memories of his games over the years.
That said, pav has certainly stepped up against my boys a few times, both fantastic players

Stupid poll Goodes is a 2x brownlow medalist, either way I'd take Pavlich
How is it a stupid poll? It's pretty damn close, you can make a case for either, and both are legends. Both are versatile and can play most positions on the ground. Both have many accolades. It's one of the better polls on this board.
