I actually see some sense in making Pavlich the full back of the AA team. If you look at his stats they are far greater than most of the full backs this year. This is not to say that he is better than all the rest - not yet anyway - but during this season, he was the best. Leppitsch did make the team at CHB and Fletcher wasn't as good as he has been this year.

I admire the choice of Pavo at FB

After the regular season, Pavlich was #1 in the AFL for rebound 50's (according to the AFL Stats Page). He was in the top 10 in the AFL for kicks.

Anywhere heres the article Porthos posted in the other thread.

Fremantle star Matthew Pavlich fully deserved his position in the All-Australian team, Dockers coach Chris Connolly said yesterday.

Pavlich's selection at full-back over Port Adelaide's Darryl Wakelin was a controversial choice on Tuesday night. Critics said he did not deserve the position because he had not played enough at full-back during the season and because he was too attacking.

But Connolly said Pavlich had played on the best key forward every week, regardless of where he lined up.

"If the best forward in the opposition decided to play at centre half-forward, Pav followed him there. If he played at full-forward, Pav played at full-back . . . He played on the best forward in the opposition. He's actually the best full-back and centre half-back. Maybe if they'd switched them around, people wouldn't have a problem.

"And for people to say that Pav has been too attacking - well, compared to Justin Leppitsch, Chris Johnson and Brett Montgomery, he's the Rock of Gibraltar."

Pavlich kept Coleman medallist David Neitz to six possessions and one goal in round eight and Nick Holland to seven touches and one goal in round 18. Geelong full-forward Kent Kingsley was goal-less in round 20, while Brad Ottens kicked two first-quarter goals on Pavlich in round four and was quiet for the rest of the game.

Pavlich kept Collingwood's Anthony Rocca to one goal in round 12, was on top of James Hird before the Essendon captain's horror injury in round six, and beat him in round 21.

"When you look at his year, I think Warren Tredrea made the most of his opportunities on him in a game in which we were beaten convincingly, and Matthew Richardson beat him for two quarters," Connolly said.

"But other than those two games, I don't think he really lowered his colours at any stage this year.

"I think Pav had a far bigger influence on games than the full-backs that I saw. I didn't follow the other guys as closely as some people, but we only shifted him to get him into the middle so we could enhance our game."

Connolly said criticism of Pavlich's selection was a further sign that the Dockers were still seen as "Team X". "We're not really watched and we're not really respected," he said.

Yeah, I remember seeing that in action. Every time he got told to play on by the umpire after taking too long to kick in, he'd bomb it long to no clear target.

Kenny the only reason he led the league in rebound 50's was because Fletcher missed games....Pavlich's average is 4.82 compared to Fletcher's 6.33!!

Just thought i would clear that up...i think he deserved his spot though, just not at FB.

If you reckon. I seem to remember another Freo superstar that racked up the stats in the backlines. His name is Heath Black - how did he go this year again?

Freo have always loved to chip it around in the backline, which is going to make their defensive stats look pretty damn good.

Your arrogance amazes me, Porthos. I don't know if Pavlich deserved to be AA full back, but one thing he did fantastically this year was kick ins and rebounding. The amount of times he thumped them 65m directly to a teammate's advantage was great to watch. Freo were in fact leading the league in % of times a kick in directly resulted in a goal, without the opposition touching the ball.

I'm well aware of that Jod :)

I didn't want to mention it in my argument though ;)

Jod just out of curiousity, where would you line him up?

In my AA team, he would be on the bench. Leppa at FB and Jakovich at CHB. You wont see a better display from a CHB this season than Jako's round 17 game against Collingwood. Absolutely tore them apart.

Of course he did, after he disgraced himself the week before, he would have wanted to put in a decent game. :D

Jako, I dont think so the man is a gun one on one but his disposals have let him down on a regular basis. Whats up w/ the kicking style? Is that from the knee surgery? ;)

Yep, Jako is probably better than Pavlich one on one at the moment, but Pavlich is better in every other department. Especially kicking.

LOL....cmon Kenny.

Jako is a better leader, has better hands, reads the play better, better one on one, can play ruck....about the only think Pavlich does better is his kicking. It's not like Jako is bad at that either.

Going a little overboard there after an AA guernsey....

Better leader......NO, better hands......maybe, reads the play better......NO, better one on one.......Jako one of the best, can play ruck.......they both can, disposals.......Pavlich hands down.

Pavlich - 10 Goals / 307 Kicks / 124 Marks / 411 Disposals

Jakovich - 3 Goals / 251 Kicks / 81 Marks / 350 Disposals

I agree he had a good year but better than Pav..........NO!

Better leader? No. Pavlich is our VC already and a born leader. Will captain us one day. The only thing Jako has on Pav here is experience.

Better hands? Probably. Pavlich's marking has been a little down from his first two seasons. He still takes a lot of marks, but I agree this season Jako has probably had better hands. Pavlich has had shoulder problems though.

Reads the play better? No/ maybe. Pavlich is pretty good at reading the play. He is always in the right spot. Most of the time takes the right option.

Better 1 on 1. Yes. As Monkey Magic said, Jako is one of the best.

Longer kicker. No. Pavlich can kick them 65m in his sleep :)

More accurate kick. No. Pavlich can pinpoint passes and usually is deadly accurate with his kicking. Jako has been known for blazing away.

Creativeness/ setting up play- Pavlich by 10 times the length of Basil Zemplis's nose.

That is my honest opinion on them.

Well im sorry Kenny but your honest opinion is terribly bias.

So what your basically saying that Pavlich is better than Jakovich?

Most of the above is crap but the one i must laugh the hardest at is Pavlich being a better leader. Jakovich is one of the most inspirational footballers never to be made captain. All WC supporters were in absolute shock when they gave it to Cuz over Jako. He is a born leader!

Pavlich has better foot skills than Jako...thats about it.

I think Pavlich is better than Jakovich (currently, not on what has happened in the past). Obviously Jako was a great player and was one of the best CHB's going around. But Pavlich is stepping up now and he has been more influential than Jako this year, hence his AA selection.

OK Jako is a better leader at the moment, but will never have captained the club. Pavlich probably will captain a side one day.

So right now, Pavlich is a longer kick, more accurate kick, more creative and sets up more plays, and both are even in regards to reading the plays?

Do you agree with that? If not, which parts don't you agree to?

I dont think Pavlich is better right now. I think they are both playing really well. Its like saying who is better between McLeod and Voss...Voss had a slightly better season but you cant really give a clear answer as to who the better player really is.

Jakovich is back in really good form but is still a long way from his 92 through 95 best. Back then he was awesome and Pavlich will have to become the greatest player of all time to reach those sorts of heights.

Pavlich probably will captain a side but that doesnt mean he is a better leader than Jakovich. I take it you too were quite shocked when Jako was overlooked, as were we all...that was not his fault. He was ready and still is. But the club decided to go down a different path.

Pavlich is a longer kick but that doesnt make him any better of a player, Dew can kick the ball a mile but does that make him better than Cousins? No. Pavlich is probably more accurate with his kicking but Jakovich is no slouch.

Pavlich is probably more creative because that is how he plays the game. Pavlich looks to run from defence and create play. Jako used to be like that, i remember in the 94 GF when he came charging up from CHB straight through a pack collected the ball, tucked it under his arms and charged through the middle of the ground. He was awesome. But nowadays he is more like a rock in defence. He stops offensive attacks dead, but doesnt look to counter, rather give off a handpass to a Matera, Hunter, Green etc.. But because Pavlich tries to be more creative doesnt mean he is a better player, Jako and Pavlich both stopped the opponents attack, Jako gives it to someone else, Pavlich has a run.

Definitely not even in reading the play. Jako is the master, ive being watching him for 10 or so years and he reads the play extremely well, knows where its going, knows when to zone off. A few people get mistaken that Jako is loose in the back half when he takes an uncontested chest mark...he isnt loose, he just knew where the ball was going and zoned off accordingly.

Look Pavlich is a good young player but one AA guernsey doesnt make him better than one of the greats of the game. It's actually kind of an insult to Jakovich.
