With all that is going on should this be compulsory?
I understand the issues, but when it comes down to it, we have lost, for God knows how long, one of the best the West has ever produced.
He's not ours but it could be.

Should it be a condition of employment, just as it is with other athletes that you can be tested, anywhere, anytime?

My inclination is yes.

I would also be very disappointed in the club if they haven't already got all of our players to do it this week. Outside the AFL system if need be.They may not be allowed within the rules but they can forcefully suggest.

While "Recreational Drugs" may not be performance enhancing, I think we can see that they don't allow players to continue to perform at the level required!

I'm with you because the clubs are putting a lot of time and money into their conditioning, fitness, rehab etc..I'm surprised the AFLPA wont allow clubs to do it under some kind of arrangement.

Why is the AFL and Players Association scared about zero tolerance?.

I think the answer to that is obvious. A big % of AFL player would take recreational drugs on weekends, just like any young men their age out in society.

Given the negative effects of alcohol on weight and fitness it's probably even preferrable from the viewpoint of keeping in shape to pop a pill or have a line rather than go out and sink a belly full of p1ss.

If every player was tested every Sun/Mon morning we'd be handing out suspensions left right and centre and the AFL would have a public relations nightmare. Better to leave it as is and be seen to be doing something without actually intruding too much. I'm surprised the players association is happy for players to be tested for non-performance enhancing drugs anyway.

See i would rather the club know straight away what is going on.
They have a right to know that a player is on the gear. Who knows what might have happened if Ben had been pinned before this.
If Woosh and the club had been able to force him into Rehab before now, they may not have this problem.

It doesn't necessarily have to be public either.
A long Osteitis Pubis Injury ought to do it.

I see what you're saying but not every player who dabbles on the weekend would have a problem in need of rehab. In fact I doubt many would at all.

Just as most players who go out drinking aren't alcoholics in need of AA meetings.

1: illegal
2: legal

Cigarettes are legal but I'd rather our players pop a pill every now and then, than reduce their lung capacity by smoking.

Look, ideally I'd rather our players not drink, do drugs or even go out at night during the season. But they're not robots and we don't live in an ideal world so we just have to accept that these things are going to happen and hope our players are professional enough not to go overboard.

Where's the difference tho between AFL players and real life workplaces???
Alot of companies, especially mining, have zero tolerance for drugs and alcohol. Workers do random tests often and so they should as it should be the right of an employer. If it effects your job it effects your employer and considering the money these guys are on they should respect thier workplace even more.
Being an employer of 4 guys if one of them has a big night and it affects thier work they get told in a big way and they only get a cpl warnings.
So all im saying is why should it be any different for the AFL.

Been working in the mining industry for over 17 years and all mining companies are into testing (Fitness for work).

Most mining companies have a 3 strike policy within 12 months;
1st offence : Sent offsite - counselled - Paid Leave -Cant come back to site until a negative test.
2nd offence : Sent offsite - counselled - Manager decision whether paid or not - Cant come back to site until negative.
3rd offence : Out the gate (Sacked)

Whilst doing fly in fly out - the most complained thing about the policy" was on my week off what i do in my own time is my business ". Which in the end did`nt wash . You either give up or leave the industry.

The urine test picks up basically everything . You have a joint and it stays in your system for upto 4-6 weeks . powders-pills etc are out of your system within 12 hours .
Salvia tests pick up the last 6 hours .
