Not critical of his playing style because he is sublimely skilled. But I have always thought the best captains are the ones that crash packs, impose their wills on the game, set the example of physicality. Maxwell did that, what he lacked in skill he made up for in his physical impact in contests. Not that Maxwell was brutal, but he flung himself into situations that demanded others attention.

Pendlebury goes hard into contests at clearances and hard ball gets, he just shows no emotion. Win or lose he is just the same. He never gets pissed off and he never gets excited and you look to your captain to get feedback. With Maxwell you knew if you did something good and you knew if you did something bad, same as Buckley. Pendlebury gives you nothing.

I remember a game v swans in 2006 or 07 maybe up in Sydney. Maxwell lead the players up the race and onto the ground, the TV cameras were zeroed in on him. Buckley was captain, but Maxwell lead them up the race, walking backwards, looking directly at the team, he was doing all the talking, they were all intent on what he was saying.... I knew there and then, this bloke is a leader of men.

He doesn't display passion on the field. I've seen him animated and very vocal with the team while directing players and setting up at stoppages. Generally though he comes across as cool, calm and collected. Seems like the kind of bloke that rarely loses it, or if so, its behind closed doors.

Sometimes you need a leader to emotionally inspire the team to greater heights, other times a leader that keeps everyone focused on the job at hand. If you are lucky you get both types in the same individual.

Well we haven't seen greater heights under Pendles.

IMO the weight of failure has affected Pendlebury's personal performances.

Each year since 2012 he seems to have been less effective and less enthusiastic on the field.

He is not a Hodge style leader and that's ok, I am sure the players respect him when he says something at training and on the field. But I think the game plan and the lack of ability that the players have has affected his personal performance. He seems to be down on himself sometimes when a teammate makes a basic error that a former teammate - say a Didak/Ball etc would not have made.

Maybe I am reading too much into body language.

Not only fit but back to his best. Just loved it when caddie got him yesterday HTB but when he got up absolutely gave Caddie a serve and look on his face was like we got you campaigners today FU your shit. It was the mongrel that he needs to show. I feel the rest of season for Pendle is going to carrer best. He's got that look about him

Where are all of those people that said we'll never see the best of him again? He has been outstanding for the last month or so.

It's amazing what happens when he is played in the centre square from start to finish rather than being wasted at half back.

Exactly this......he is marked very hard because he is so good.

He was sublime yesterday......maybe he can teach Danger how to kick at goal :D

Yes given the choice I'd take Scott every time in the team overMaxwell.
Maxwell may be the better captain, but steam that hasbetterthan maxwell means we really are on the way.
Scott does his captaincy far more subtler than nick.

Agree.
He is the only one threatening Treloar in the Copeland.
