with all the hype and hoopla surrounding this rugby 'world cup' (sic), i thought it good to take a look around the world and see what people are really interested it.

we have all heard the boastful john o'neil going on about the 4 billion tv viewers, and how this carnival is the world's 3rd biggest sporting event, yada yada yada, but consider this:

the womens' soccer world cup has just concluded in the usa and has probably generated more genuine interest world wide than this over blown 'world cup' (sic). the final was won by germany over sweeden and drew an audience of 13 million in germany. how many matches in this carnival could match that?

englands first game v georgia peaked at 5.3 million.
england v south africa peaked at 6.1 million.

england/samoa peaked between 5/6 million

eng/urug has been pushed onto itv 2 because gmtv (who own the timeslot for itv 1 at the time of the match wanted to show cartoons.

itv1 can be seen by the whole nation 60+ million

itv2 can be seen by about 8 million

so far the highest figure for a match on itv2 is 700,000 for wales v tonga.

why is itv2 viewed by so few people? is it only a digital channel?

i believe foxtel have just splurged 500 million or something to go digital.

I wouldn't say all of England would be necking themselves if they lost a rugby union world cup game. Those figures suggest the event hasn't exactly taken the nation by storm.

I'm sure the TV figures are huge up North.
