Perth Stadium

Really not a fan of how it's surrounded by parklands, I guess that was the "aboriginal" theme they had to tie in there somewhere because it'll have native plants or some shit?

I think as long as the amenities and viewing angles are better nobody will really complain too much though. The design is a little boring but if it ends up looking like Allianz Arena we'll be golden.
The MCG is surrounded by a park and its nicer than Etihad being surrounded by multi story buildings.

Plus it looks like one side will be surrounded by car parking, the train station and the freeway. The other side is surrounded by the parklands and walk way to the footbridge across the river. So it will depend where you live and how you'll get to the stadium whether you end up in the park or not. It's not like you have to hike in through kilometers of park before you stumble across the stadium!

If your concern is lack of food, drink or night spots in the surrounding area that's probably reasonable but (aside from in the stadium itself) I guess it's wait and see if the surrounding areas like East Perth with the new footbridge end up serving the purpose. 60k people regularly leaving the area at opportune times for food and drink, I think the free market will take care of itself.

Just think it needs more retail/food/pub options to be the "hive" of activity on non-footy days that they've been boasting about for years now, doesn't look like it will be too vibrant on those days. I would have liked to see the Burswood peninsular filled out a bit more with some med/hi-rise developments I guess.

Also wondering if they're seriously going to be using the practice oval for parking as shown in the renders.

I am looking forward to seeing what effect this will have on East Perth's "vibrancy", place has been a cemetery for yonks.

That carpark looks to actually be the practice oval in other pictures. There's no visible carpark, although I believe there will be one under the stands. New information doesnt mention it though.

That's a good point. Neither the G nor Etihad do very well on non match days. Plenty of functions but not casual business. I think you can have parklands around the place and still get your retail and dining somewhere in the nearby area so I'm hopeful that natural progression makes it happen. Although more and more I've noticed how important it is to plan things. Us general public are much more suggestible than we'd like to think. It certainly does seem the casino are the biggest immediate real winners from a stadium right next door. Hopefully some more honest small businesses are as well.

Should be great.

However it is very interesting to hear it is $40 million under budget before construction has even started. I would wait until the project is completed and all the variations have been added to the bill before proclaiming any budget wins.

The model itself look unfinished and rusty. Look alright on the inside but the outside is very ugly.

Does anyone else get a Close Encounters type feel to it?

Do they have an automatic rule book dispenser at the turnstiles for Eagles fans?

They're also going to employ a wildlife ranger to ensure there are always ducks around the stadium - go to make their supporters feel comfortable going to and from the game given how their team performs
