Well im a poor young man with no time to give attention to any worthy pet, so i've decided to buy some fish

Today i bought a Clown Loath (his name is Jaws<3) and tomorrow im buying the most bad-ass tropical fish ever (a Black ghost knife fish!)

Anyone bother with keeping fish? I've always been intrested in fish and general water life (especially those bad-ass mexican walking fish mum never let me have)

I've gone through a few pet fish over the past five years or so. Some have done really well and lasted for ages and others have lasted long at all.

The longest living fish I had was just your stock standard goldfish and it lived for about two years I reckon.

One thing that gets annoying is cleaning the tank, which we have to do about every two weeks.

I'll give them 3 days before they cark it
Monster:mad::mad:

I remember when i had goldfish when i was about 8, my brother (i think he was about 4) decided that the goldfish would like his co-co pops and poured his bowl into the tank

I lost 7 of my 10 dearest friends:(

Black ghost's are pretty cool but they love clean water, so make sure you keep up with regular water changes probably once a week maybe stretch out to two depending on how good the filtration is and the size of the tank. Also dont forget to add something to get rid of chlorine when you do your changes, personally i use prime.
I realise it sounds like a pain doing weekly changes but it really only takes about an hour to do once you get into the swing of it and it's much more enjoyable having healthy long living fish than having sick fish you have to constantly replace.
Good luck and any questions i'm happy to help:thumbsu:

I got a fish tank for xmas. Cleaning it every month or so is bullshit. I go long periods of time without feeding them hoping they will die. Goldfish are invincible.

I'm going to flush them down the toilet one day soon.

Anyone want a fishtank?

I've had the same five fish in my front pond for six years. Feed them a couple of times a year. I think they will outlive me.

You're an idiot if you think you can buy fish to put in a tropical aquarium and not put any effort into it. I had a tropical fish tank for years when I was at uni and put more time and effort into it than my dog or my cat. You're espcially deluded if you're going to go and buy fish like that for your first tank. I spent ages adjusting the PH, making sure the temperature was alright, cleaning the tank and getting rid of algae, and generally fiddling around with it. It's only going to take one stuff up and all your fish will be dead. Good luck!

I split up with my ex 2 & 1/2 years ago, and the Angel Fish we had ar still alive. They must be three years old. Bloody huge too, they would be worth a bit of money now.

If I ever come back to Melbourne and they are still there, maybe they will be big enough to eat.

^ Great advice. A bristle-nose catfish or similar does wonders with keeping a tank algae free.

Got an African cichlid tank at home, definitely a worthwhile and rewarding hobby if you're willing to do the work.

I found a problem with catfish - if a bigger fish had an injury they would harass it and start sucking at it, until they killed it. Then they would eat the body.

It's fun to watch, because they eat the body very slowly, but you lose fish.

Yeah, ages ago I had a Black Moor (goldfish with eyes that stick out the side of its head) and the sucking catfish ate its eyes, that was pretty cool.

Bristle nose catfish also clean the tank but I've never seen one attack another fish, they seem to enjoy hiding in logs or under rocks most of the time.

When I used to live in the Kimberley, I had a proper catfish that I'd caught in a 180L tank. I kept trying to add other fish, like perch, salmon, barramundi and moon fish, but the catfish just attacked them all. Very, very territorial. I also turned my fish tank into a bait tank at one stage. I found that the shrimp and cherabin up there could quite happily go from salt to fresh water and survive for weeks, so I had a constant supply of live bait. I caught a lot of threadfin and barramundi off those shrimp.

the cheaper fish, tougher they are, usually. 3 buck comets are a pretty safe bet. not the sexiest or most exciting fish but they survive pretty well.

tropical fish, ones that need specific temperatures and so on, are pretty easy to kill inadvertently if you're a novice. best to start at the bottom and work your way into keeping fish.

had 3 fish for close to 3 years until they all died within the space of 2 months. currently just have the one swimming around (white-orange goldfish). big fancy-pants aquarium could be a long term goal of mine (complete with living plants + CO2, etc), but i don't know that i'll ever have the money. just have the 30L corner tank at the moment.
