I had a pet rat Pooky, he was a little cutie, they are excellent pets, very clean & smart as, I also had pet mice, but I only had them to breed so my pet python Lurch, could eat.

Would really love a ferrett, not really rodents I guess, but not sure how safe it would be with Kenny, he plays a bit rough. :(

I believe the rat is the best rodent pet to keep. Does anyone here keep or have kept rats? What do you think of the furry little critters?

Thrawny, what are rats like as pets? Seriously, I have always thought of them as vermin (no offence, just my ignorance). Also I can't imagine them sitting on your lap, sleeping on your bed, or giving you a cuddle. If you know what I mean? :)

Bee

I will answer as well, they sit on your shoulder & snuggle up, just like a cat, plus they are very playful & inquisiitive, it is fun making little mazes for them to run through.

They're cool little fellas.

They are actually very intelligent animals. You can teach one to come when you call out their name, teach them how to play basketball, use the littlerbox and gymnastics. They enjoy the attention you give them, enjoy a scratch on the back, a tickle on the tummy and actually get along well with my labrador.

The domestic variety are clean. they groom themselves more than cats do, and as long as their cage is kept clean, they won't smell one bit. Some of my friends didn't like the idea of keeping a rat, but once they met my pets, they forgot all about the stereotype and loved 'em. I don't like it when people say "Ohhh... it's so cute. What is it, a hampster?" and when I reply "No, it's a rat" they start going "Eww... gross". It's a pity that one misunderstood word can transform someone from "Aww" to "Eww" in under 10 seconds.

A shame they live for only up to three years. A great pet to have. Very friendly (as long as it gets handelled at a young age).

Okay, so if I wanted to buy one for a 10 year old child, would that be a problem? Would it take much for him to look after? Do they have to be kept in their cage inside, or can you keep them in a cage outside? And if you have two males together will they fight?

Same pet shop sold me the transvestite guinea pig and the same thing happened only worse as two males fight so they tried to rip each others throats apart every time they clashed!

LMFAO! A transvestite guinea pig? Jesus, Spide, I can just see him dressed as a female guinea pig! :D

If the child feeds them, gives them water, cleans the cage once or twice a week and constantly plays with them, then I wouldn't see a problem. Rats are very easy to take care of... and are cheap to maintain (expect for your odd vet bill). It'd be best to keep them inside because these animals can be very sensitive to the weather (ie. heat). Since they are social animals, it'd be best to have two of the same sex. Males should be introduced to each other at a young age, or otherwise they are very territorial and might fight. If that happens, neutering can help curb this.

I don't understand the concept of pets. I hate animals. Actually that's not true. I like sheep, cows, pigs, chickens... particularly pigs. Anyone who's had prosciutto crudo will know what I mean.

Thanks Thrawny, you know my brother is going to kill me when I give my nephew a pet rat as a present!

Rats Rock!!!

I have had 2 pet rats in my life time and they are the best pets!!!

I love them dearly and I am currently planning on get another one, they are very clean and very smart little critters!! They are the best company, especially when I am at my computer and they use to run around on my desk! :p

I use to have a white one named Mr Squiggles, but he died!!!! :( then I had a female one named Cinnamon but I had to get rid of her - where I used to live :( I wish I still had her, she was the best!

I reckon a ferrett would be cool too! :D

No problem. Just make sure you get 'em as babies. Then they'll be more friendly as they grow with human contact. ;)

Baldrick: Right, how about a nice meal, while you chew it over?

Blackadder: [suspicious] What's on the menu?

Baldrick: Rat. [shows him a big black rat] Saute or fricassee.

Blackadder: [peers at the rat] Oh, the agony of choice. Saute involves...?

Baldrick: Well, you take the freshly shaved rat, and you marinade it in a puddle for a while.

Blackadder: Hmm, for how long?

Baldrick: Until it's drowned. Then you stretch it out under a hot light bulb, then you get within dashing distance of the latrine, and then you scoff it right down.

Blackadder: So that's sauteing, and fricasseeing?

Baldrick: Exactly the same, just a slightly bigger rat.

Blackadder: Well, call me Old Mr. Un-adventurous but I think I'll give it a miss this once.

I think Capybaras are just large versions of guinea pigs. It's known that they've been used as livestock and as pets (in South America). But seeing as they're very rare as pets, I doubt you'll find anyone in Oz that keeps one, expect perhaps a Biologist.

Rat's are clean animals, they don't smell and can be tamed and trained easily. They're cheap and low maintenence, I rekon they're a great childrens pet.

I've done various practicals (injecting etc) with rodents last year for my course and studied them (as they're lab animals), and they won't bite unless they've been startled, and if you stick your fingers in the cage (as they think it's food), and if you do get bitten... it's like a razor blade.

The only disadvantage is that they breed unbelievably quick, all the time, and will inbreed and keep going and going and going. :)

Similar thing with my rabbits. They're both males & when we got them one used to try to hump the other one. We got that one desexed, then the roles reversed! So got the other one desexed as well.....that worked for a couple of days, till the decided they couldn't stand the sight of each other & just attacked each other all the time.....They eventually had to be separated....would've been easier (& cheaper) to do that in the 1st place!

I was around a friends place once when a dirty great rat tried to run up my leg! I of course freaked and tried to stomp on it until I noticed my friend freaking just as bad shreaking "Monty!!!!"

Moral of the story..... If you have a pet rat and no one knows, don't let it out when your friends are over just to freak them out or you fav pet may become a smudge on the carpet!
