This bloke plays at my work every sunday and I usually get chatting to him. Yesterday I bought one of his discs.

Just interested in other peoples thoughts and knowledge of this bloke.

Ive seen him play about 8 times in a relaxed beer garden atmosphere on sundays with anb intimate setting, playing solo acoustics.

He is a respectable guitartist, actually he's pretty good. He also has this thing where he purses his lips together and gets a trumpet sound happening, and if you werent looking at him at the time, you'd swear it actually was a trumpet.

He's been around for years and has had some very respectable 'contemporary' recordings. I liken him to a John Farhnam, except Peter can actually play an instruement and write his own songs.

He is a genuinley decent bloke whose seen and heard it all before, his wife is an absolute beauty who I had to stop and pinch myself so I wouldnt stare one week.

Anyone familiar with this guy, and willing to share their thoughts?

Liked his version of One Little Christmas Tree at Carols by Candlelight once lol. True, i did - so i remember him for that. Also, he was in a band and i can't think of the song, but it had the title "Summer something or other".

My impression after watching him perform about 6 sunday arvos in relaxed casual atmosphere is that he has spent a career pandering to the contempories. Now this may pay off big time for him at some stage, ala John Farhnam's late success.

But I get the impression from speaking to him and when he does some covers that there is a bit of a gnarly animal within that's never been released, and I just wonder if he's written for a market throughout his career, instead of writing for himself. Which is cool, he drives a nice car, has a sensational wife covered in gold and counts many Australian music indusrty stalwarts as his friends, so its working for him.

Without blowing my own trumpet, I believe Im as good , if not better, composer, singer and musician than Peter, but I think he's always had an eye on the market, the financials, the business side of the business. Those were the things that turned me off music, and the things I intentionally chose to ignore.

I think he's a very talented composer, musician and vocalist, and Im gonna try and get him drunk and in a jam session to see what lay beneath in the next couple of weeks.

The name of the band was annoying me - Stylus was the name - and Summer Breeze was their pretty much one hit.

From what i've ever seen of him, he seems like a nice bloke and deserves a bit of success if that's what he wants - or just continuing playing music and doing what he's doing.

Can you tell me how to get a copy of his CD, Diceman

I'll see him again sunday and ask if he's got some kind of mail out system or email where you can request to buy some tunes.

And on Stylus.. Didnt they have massive long hair and the full glam rock poser attitude(circa late 80s/early 90s)?

Not sure about the hair, but they would be more likely to be late '70s i think.

I dont think Peter Cupples is old enough to have been in a band in teh 70s unless they were like 12 year olds.

He's probably only very early 40s at the very most.

I found a website for you Froars, but didnt look if you can buy stuff there. Let me know if you want me to get a disc for you.

I don't mind his voice from the little I've heard.

Hates a drink:eek:

Stylus were around in the mid-late 70's. They sounded what I can only describe as bland and uninteresting, in an era that took bland and uninteresting to dizzying heights. They were a soft rock band and seemed to be trying too hard to sound like a West Coast American band.Mind you that's my opinion.
I'd say Peter Cupples is closer to 50 than 40.

Oh ok. I had a look at his site and it did have Stylus references and some reuinion gig so he obviously had something to do with them. Suprising as he dont look 50, or just my eyes are getting closer to the same age.

Its funny how when you're 15, an 18 year old looks like such a huge grown up person, and then you're 20 and an 18 year old looks like such a kid...

then you're 30 and you're not quite sure what anyone looks liek anymore.:o

Peter Cupples had the chance to play VFL for Footscray. He turned it down to play the geetar.

If he's 50 and he's got all the bling and the rest of the trappings it looks like he made the right decision.

Bloody accurate call there Linder.

Peter is a good little singer but he is a poor mans Farnham and one Farnham is enuff.

Stylus definitely tried to tap into the Westcoast sound of the 70s,even the Philly sound, but Aussie productionin in the day just wasnt a competitor.

He has a typical session singer voice - nice but forgettable.

I cant believe this one hit wonder gets a thread on Big Footy. He was a poor mans Little River Band, attempting American West Coast music but without anything like the success of LRB (or Air Supply for that matter).

Whats next - a Darryl Cotton thread?

Never heard him play. The only thing I know about him is that he tried to play hide-the-sausage with my missus, in the early 70s. Not that there's anything wrong with that. I was almost tempted to do the same thing myself.
