Wouldn't dream of making something like this up.

It was the article on David Hilles tragic teen years that made me think of Peter Motley today.

In 1990 I worked for a government department that allowed me to look up car accidents and who was involved etc. The Motley accident was perhaps the most famous one I could think of, so as a young guy I couldn't resist looking it up to read all the details, the police accident report etc. To my horror, I saw the guy I knew from High School listed as the other driver.

I spoke to another guy I knew who was a close friend of this guy and I asked him about it, and he said that the guy in question was having great difficulty coming to terms with the fact that he in some way had destroyed a guys life a few years before.

When Peter Motley was brought onto the footy show for a catch up in 1997, I immediately thought "I wonder how _____ is dealing with this if he is watching?"

The following Monday my mother told me that hot off the bush telegraph, she had been told that he had committed suicide that very weekend.

Put two and two together, but I do not think it was a coincidence.

As I said, some things have no happy ending.

To throw even further irony on it all, the guy (and myself) lived within a stones throw of Mark Majerczak and Jamie Dunlop in his home suburb...two guys who were teammates of Peter Motley.

Spooky.

I think that it might have helped your friend if he had met Peter, he would have known that Peter held no grudges against him and they could have settled things.

Remember going to watch the match after Motley's accident

Was at VFL Park

Pretty sure we played Hawthorn or Essendon - whoever it was, we tore them apart.

The team were clearly playing for Motley that day

Yer, dad got injured in that game :p

What number did he wear? (was it 4?)

I worked for years at the same Hosp as Mots' partner, and for sure, Stella Margaret will not be a bagger!

In fact she will follow the Bombers as Mum is as stubborn as a mule;).

I wish Mots and his new family all the best!

CoolDewd that really is most tragic re: the person involved.

I remember dad telling me when he walked in, that there was a picture of Mots, English and Evans (was one of my dads best mates)

He said the look on their face when they walked in for the 87 granny was something you could not describe, no-one spoke no looked at each other all they were worried about were the 3 photos of the the 3 players that werent playing.

There wasnt even much of a gameplan because i knew when i walked into the rooms that we werent going to lose this match, and then after the game every1 was giving their medals to Mots and i have photo at home of me as a toddler with Mots will all the premiership medallions (most of them that the players had forced him to wear) and holding the premiership cup and the look on his phone when holding me is priceless.

Dad always told me that after the match that, all the players walked to the wing of the MCG and every1 look at Bernie, Des and Peter and help the premiership cup as to say "This was for you".... they were never going to lose that game.

That's pretty sad for both.I thought it was a older drunk driver who did this.I didn't know this was some young immature kid who wasn't paying attention driving.

Is this guy for real?
Claims to be the son of a 200 game player who played at the same time(is that player ever named?), then asks whether Motley wore 4!
Hallo!!!!!!
Wasn't ther a quiet little achiever recruited at the samr time as Motley who managed a few games with the 4 on his back?
Methinks we have a walter Mitty in our ranks, or am i the johnn-come-lately and this fact has been known all along?

I am absolutley terrible with players number, especially those who played before my time but even now days apart from the top 10 numbers i cannot name many others.

We are all different learners i suppose, but unless a player was great mates with dad and iv been to their house and seen old jumpers i wouldnt be able to tell u anyones numbers

Well, there we have it! bluepride is son of SOS!
Hang on, Jack Silvagni is only 13 (or thereabouts) so is bluepride a previously unheard of love child of the aforesaid SOS?
Or, was there another injury in that match that Carlton tried to quietly bury so that the opposition for the following weeks wouldn't be alerted.
I await bluepride's next post with bated breath.

Just standing by the rostrum now, awaiting the delivery of the envelope when all will be revealed...............

Just who will be the famous dad, the pride of bluepride, he who has so many old videos..............

Still waiting..............

No offence i have absolutley no idea what that first bit was but he sounds very old fashioned.

You can wait all you want, im not tellling because as i am doing a course up at Queensland and dont really know hes place in the Melbourne media latley and im not going to reveal his name for the sake of a few people who love these kind of discussions. |

I am not really fussed if people dont believe me, because i have put up with my surname getting the raised eyebrows for years and the fact i am currently fighting with him doesnt really help and maybe the fact i said 200 games was so people would be diverted away from who he was, but i guess now iv been caught out.

Seriously, dont you have better things to do then stalking me and finding out who my dad is.

I dont get the old videos bit?
*cough* faggart *cough*

Seriously, don't you have better things to do than inventing a fantasy world, dropping names, and suggesting you have connections and inside information?
By all means post on all things carlton - lets hear your views and opinions on any subject. But cut the crap and this fantasy world.

Cool Story :thumbsu:

I grew up in Adelaide as a Sturt fan and Motley was the most talented of the three SA stars to come over to Carlton. If he had no major injuries in his career he could have been a Brownlow Medalist. The modern day players that remind me the most of him are Matthew Pavlich and Adam Goodes. He could play every position on the ground.
