Do you reckon he's qualified for the job? Seemed like too nice a guy to be an AFL coach, not that I know him very well....

I reckon Mark Mickan is a pretty good choice. (altho Primus would know just as much........)

Rhode knows his footy and seems pretty cluey generally. Gets on well with the media especially here. I'd expect he'll be in the box on match day helping out too. Apart from the football duties, he's that missing link I was looking for between club and media.

As long as footy ops only means stuff like organising flights and so forth, not any contractual stuff.

Also, Mickan? Ugh.

Seriously, we already have the best ruck coach going around...we would've been better off getting an ex-midfielder in.

Yeah, its official.

Rohde gains Power

Former Western Bulldogs coach Peter Rohde has been appointed to a new position with reigning premier Port Adelaide as general manager – football operations.

And in another appointment, Port has reunited the first ever leadership group of the Brisbane Bears with Mark Mickan crossing from Adelaide to be the new ruck coach, replacing David Pittman.

Rohe was sacked as coach of the Bulldogs at the end of 2004, during which the club won just nine of his 45 games in charge.

He returns to South Australia, where he enjoyed success as coach of SANFL club Norwood as premiership coach of Norwood in 1997.

Rohde’s appointment does not affect the remainder of Port’s football operations, with Mick Moylan still in charge of list management and David Hutton still football manager.

Mickan, a former Brisbane and Adelaide ruckman, was an assistant coach of Adelaide for several years, before being removed at the end of the season when new coach Neil Craig opted to install a hand-picked coaching staff at the Crows.

He was the inaugural skipper of the Bears in 1987, with Williams his vice-captain.

Despite winning the 2004 flag, Port has undergone a major revamp of its football staff with fitness coach Andrew Russell departing for Hawthorn, Pittman standing down and recruiting manager Alan Stewart joining the Crows in an administrative capacity.

Assistant coach Alastair Clarkson left the club during the 2004 finals after being appointed as senior coach of Hawthorn.

Re: Peter Rohde

More from the Port website. You'll be pleased Porthos that it says nothing about players contracts. (PS *note to self* ... Rohde not Rhode ...)

Rohde and Mickan join the Power

Port Adelaide Football Club

The Port Adelaide Football Club has made two appointments to its off-field football department, including a new role as General Manager – Football Operations for former Western Bulldogs coach Peter Rohde. Mark Mickan has also joined the club as a part-time ruck coach.

The club stated the appointments had been made “in line with a review of the football structure” and that it was still considering its options in regards to further coaching appointments.

Rohde’s role will focus on the strategic management of the football department, working closely with the coaching staff, planning, running and facilitating match committee and review meetings, as well as working strategically with the other facets of the football operation.

“We are thrilled to have Peter join our club,” said Power chief executive John James. “We felt it was critical to have someone looking at our football operations from a strategic viewpoint, and with Peter’s experience we believe him to be perfectly qualified for the position. He is also a person of genuine quality and will fit terrifically well at our football club.”

Mickan, who is a former Crows and Brisbane player and Crows assistant coach, has been appointed to a part-time ruck coaching position, replacing David Pittman, who stood down at the end of the 2004 season to spend more time with his family. Mickan’s appointment is seen as an important one, particularly with the recent drafting of two young ruckmen.

“We felt with two new developing ruckman, plus the three on our list, it was important to replace David Pittman with a ruck specialist,” James said. “Mark comes to the club with a wealth of experience and enthusiasm. Mark will also bring additional knowledge to the group through the full-time psychology studies he will be undertaking next year.”

In terms of other senior positions within the football department, Mick Moylan retains his position as National Recruiting and List Manager, while David Hutton also retains his role as the Football Administration and Development Manager.

Re: Peter Rohde

One can only hope Choco can bring the best out of his old teammate.

Not a particularly incredible choice, but I guess we'll see how it goes. You could argue he didn't really have the cattle or the coach to make much of an impact down the road.

So these are the budget cuts we've been hearing about...

Hmmm lots of changes, lots of unknowns. John James, Rodhe, Mickan added, to name but a few. Allan Stewart gone (still hurting over that one). I hope those in charge of hiring people have done as thorough and professional job as in the past. How is it all going to go this year? You'd be a brave man to predict.

He was my PE teacher in high school, although I'm suprised we picked him after his poor performance at the Bulldogs.
He's operating in a completely different role though.

He was at Norwood-Morialta wasn't he?

St. Ignatius, he was a PE and science teacher, coached Norwood to a couple of flags at the same time.
