Rookie list reviewed

4:02 PM Tue 14 October, 2008

The Adelaide Football Club wishes to advise that it has reviewed its rookie list and made the following decisions:

Jared Petrenko has been upgraded to the primary list, while Edward Curnow has been told he will not be rookie listed with the club in 2009.

James Moss and Brodie Martin have both accepted offers for a second year rookie listing.

With Petrenko’s upgrading the club will now have five picks in the National Draft; 10, 28, 44, 60 and 76. Brian Donnelly (Ireland) will also be on the rookie list leaving the club with three picks in this year’s Rookie Draft.

(Note: Clubs are able to have six rookies in 2009 and 2010)

Jared Petrenko – upgraded to primary list.
James Moss – offered and accepted a second year rookie listing
Brodie Martin – offered and accepted a second year rookie listing
Edward Curnow – removed from the rookie list.

New player details:

Jared Petrenko

Height: 177cm
Weight: 74kg
DOB: 22/12/1989
Recruited from: Woodville West Torrens

I didn't pick Martin to be retained admittedly, but that was mainly because I didn't think we'd only take 3 picks in the Rookie Draft. I suppose with so many clubs expected to go deep in this draft, the RD could be very thin. Good move by the club.

Congratulations to Petrenko and well done to Moss & Martin.

Martin's last month probably saved him. He's had a dramatic year really, coming froom the U19s to the reserves to breaking into the league side in a very good team to getting the BOG in the reserves GF. If he can continue to improve like he did this year he could turn out to be a good pickup for us.

Fantastic news for Petrenko too. I hope he keeps #42, somehow that just works for him in my mind :)

Moss will be an interesting one. He has great disposal but seems to go out of games for too long at a time. I wonder how he will go after a full preseason (he missed some of last year's right?), if he can start to get more of the ball he could become a damaging player.

Farewell Curnow. I wonder if another club will give him a go? Hopefully he continues to play state level footy and keeps improving, perhaps we'll consider him in the future :)

wouldn't suprise me if we picked Curnow up again in the rookie draft

Is there any benefit to us if we did go down that path? As in, if we were going to pick him up again why not just offer him a second rookie contract first.

Oh and Gets!, live in the SANFL? Cos that does make a difference...

I can't see us picking up Curnow again in the rookie draft.

We have 3 picks in that draft now with Moss, Martin and Donnelly locked away for next year.

You'd think that we'd rookie list a young gangly ruckman - maybe a Christian Bock, which would only leave a further 2 positions up for grabs.

Just on the two lads we have retained.

Moss looks like an AFL player in the making to me. He didn't have a proper pre-season this year as he was away on a cricket tour for part of it. I'm delighted he's still with us and be surprised if he doesn't end up on the A list.

I wasn't sure whether we'd delist Martin or keep him because he did improve dramatically during the year - and he is genuinely quick.

Well done to both of these 2 lads to earn the extra year, and hopefully they will both go on to have AFL careers as a reward for doing the hard yards. :thumbsu:

Must say i'm a bit disappointed to see Curnow go, really liked how he always seemed to give 100%. The only footage i have seen of Moss and Martin are those on afc website and things posted on BF, and yes Moss does look classy, especially his disposal by foot, but Martin turning 20 this year i believe seems to be on the skiny side and i don't know how well he will be able to put on weigth, but another pre-season might be good for him.

With the 3 rookie picks, i would have 1 project Ruckman, 1 tall and a crumbing forward who can play in the middle as well.

Havn't seen enough of the players to comment other than to observe that given Curnow was our last pick in the rookie draft last year and didn't play league for Glenelg, he was the ovious one to be removed given the depth of this year's draft.

Best of luck to the kid in the futrue though. I guess he can look to Jason Porplyzia for an example of a player who still made it after some heavy disappointment.

A good decision to keep Martin and Moss on the rookie list. Next years draft will be shallow and thin, and these 2 guys could well be in contention for a promotion , especially Moss.

Martin, IMO is a a dark horse. I think it states in the draft book that other clubs also saw him as a smokey in the rookie draft so theres obviously something there which scouts think can be worked with. And hes obviously improved out of sight this year so by all reports, the club must be very happy with his progress.

IMO Petrenko and Moss will definetely make long term careers at the AFC.

I think we should fill our remaining rookie spots with ruckman.

Develop them for 3 or so years, and then sell them off at a premium to other clubs for high draft picks :D

yay, congrats to Petrenko; he can always upgrade to number 3 guernsey if he doesn't want 42.:thumbsu:
congrats to Moss and Martin being offered another year on the rookie list; i agree with everyone; Martin's rapid improvement late in the season and the BOG definitely helped. bad luck to Curnow...i didn't think the Crows would keep all 3 rookies for another year, so i'm glad Martin was given another year to show us if he's worth keeping.

Good decisions from the club :thumbsu:

to be honest Moss is the only player that I have seen live, however

Petrenko, has speed and runs the lines and should push for senior selections early in 2009

Moss, all class and a full pre-season is all that he needs, I would expect Moss to upgraded in 2009

Martin, from the footage that I have seen, he is prepared to run and carry the ball, this is another quality we need in the crows side

Curnow, works hard, great attitude however just does not have enough tricks for the afl

Those of you who have seen him play a bit can you tell me if he could be tried up forward?

I know he has played most of his senior footy down back but with Johncock & Mcleod still probably our first choices there could he debut as a crumbing/tackling forward?

.

Martin was the last player picked up last yr on the rookie list

I agree Curnow was always the most likely to go though

IMO he is best as a straight ahead running type of player, consequently i think best used playing in defence or midfield.

Perhaps an occassional run in the forward line but he doesnt appear to be a natural crumbing forward.

I like the way he plays - a real goer with pace & tackling skills - and hopefully he'll have a long career with us.

I think these two boys are going to have huge pre-seasons. They both realise if they have a great start to the season (first 5 - 10 games) there is a real chance one could be upgraded while Burton is still injured.

I would really like to see both lads burn at the start of the season to try and take this great opportunity.

Hmmm... according to the main board:

Neil Balme:

"There's a new rule next year where after round 11 one rookie will be able to play senior footy, without having to put a player on the long-term injury list."

If true does this mean both could play a game next year? Plenty of incentive there for the rookies:thumbsu:

Congratulations to Petrenko :thumbsu: hopefully he gets a few games this year

well done moss & martin hopefully they can be elevated next year or this year.

Unlucky curnow is there any chance a team might look at putting him on their rookie list this year?
