Why can't we play him in the backlines? :(

Milne murdered Doughty on the weekend - and was always likely to; Mick tried his best, but Milne is too agile and too crafty for him.

Stiffy is the perfect match up, but obviously he was unavailable, we're playing Petrenko out of position to try and get gametime into him, but surely in that type of situation we'd be better served playing him in his natural position, on a better match-up for him?

It seems we (coaches) have a desire for a small forward to be playing.

Since we don't really have one, Pets is being asked to do it.

Would have been suited to a Schneider or Milne match up.

I was wondering the same thing -- It wasn't like Doughty had an awful game, and he put his heart into it, he just looked five times worse for being on Milne.

You need someone smart, experienced, and fast on Milne, and while SuperPets lacks the experience, he couldn't do much worse than Dogga, you'd think.

Then again, it's Milne, everyone has a hard time keeping him in check.

While I'm stoked that we're finally being serious about playing a genuine small forward, I don't think Petrenko is the man. If he's not going to consistently score, then he has to be laying 5+ tackles per game - Pets does neither. Hasn't goaled in 6/10 games, only laid 4 or more tackles on 3 occasions with 1 tackle in the last 2 games. Doesn't scream natural forward to me.

Slots beautifully into that defence in place of Doughty or Schmidt, with Jaensch to play forward when he returns.

With Knights gone probably for the season Jaensch would be a perfect long kicking option...I just don't know whether he is going to get another go...hope I'm wrong. If we are going to keep Pets in the team at least have him playing in a position that benefits the team.

I've been pushing this for a while now, Jaensch should get another go and the Knights role is exactly what he needs to be doing.

It's really hard to fully rate how Pets has done as a forward, I'm not entirely sure that a proven small forward would have done a substantially better job in the same role, under the same instructions, with the guys around him under their same instructions. Last year we became a scoring machine and our two best small forwards were a lead-up forward and a guy who could bomb them from outside 50 with the greatest of ease.

I've said it before and I'll say it again...we may lack a genuine crumber, but how many teams have a guy like Knights?

Problem with Jaensch is since he has been sent back to Sturt he hasn't been setting the world on fire. He has dropped back down the list and has Symes, Armstrong, Sloane ahead of him.

Like Pets I don't think he was used in the right position in the three games he played. Should be HHF or wing, but threads have been written on this and he made the stupid mistake to follow the lead of a club champ who should have known better.

Jaensch's form would certainly have to warrant selection which it probably doesn't at this stage. But I have no doubt he'll be back well before the end of the year, he hasn't done anything worth making him a total write-off.

With Petrenkos passion and attack on the footy he should not be omitted, I think Schimdt should be dropped and play petrenks as a small defender, He shows more desire for the club to do well than any other player.(with the exception of maric)

At this stage we dont have anyone who can slot into that small foward role so it has to be pets for now

I really dont know what to make of him...looks great, attacks the ball and body, appetite for the contest....just cant get hold of the footy. He's a sweet kick for goal when he gets a chance too.

Hard to carry both him and Sloane when they are not getting hold of it.

Maybe if he went back to the SANFL with a forward/midfield role there he might develop some confidence.

problem is that neil craig is slow in a couple of areas;

1. he's slow to drop experienced players in poor form
2. he's slow to give developing players game time
3. he's slow to make positional changes during games

I feel like we missed an opportunity to turn Stiffy's suspension into a minor positive, we should've thrown Petrenko into his position and see how he went playing his natural game. He's inconsistent at present, but he's got a lot of positives and it's worth persisting with him - but it should be in the backline. Schmidt struggles defensively anyway, get Petrenko back there, get Doughty to move to Schmidt's man, get Schmidt to play more as a flanker or wing.

As for a small forward, McLeod would be great down there - and, again, it gives Petrenko time to earn a position in the backline if we do lose Macca this year.

The small forward role is hard for most players, let alone kids who've been brought up in defense. McLeod can make magic happen down there.

Agreed its very harsh for a young player to get his chance then be played totally out of position. Does anyome know if there was any point in his junior days where he was not a defender.

I like Petrenkos attack on the footy but unless he can improve his disposal and decision making then I wouldn't have him in our side. Malcolm Blight was very reluctant to pick players who didnt have skills. He was very hard on Matty Connell because Connells skills were average.

I cringed when i saw Petrenko kick the ball into the forward 50 to the lead of Tippett. Tippett had space on his opponent just for Petrenko to totally kick it over his head straight to two Saints players. Unfortunately for Petrenko too many of his possessions are like that. Personally i would send him back to the SANFL and make him improve this side of his game and not bring him back until he does. Craigy was quick to send Walker back to the SANFL to work on areas of his game yet he still lets players like Petrenko get away with poor skills and terrible decision making.

I think the coaches view that he is too small and would be vulnerable overhead.

Milne and Schneider are both under 180cm.

Pets would have a been a good match up on either.

I just don't understand why NC didn't try Pets back there late in the 3rd when the small forwards were running riot. Actually I don't understand why NC has not tried him there all year.

The small forward position appears to be almost the most difficult position on the field to master, unless it is you natural position, eg. Milne, Lecras, Didak etc.

We have tried many there in the past and lets face it, players like Edwards, Mcleod, Douglas and others have hardly made it there own. Now we want to crucify a 2nd year kid because he cant get a kick there either.

Petrenko is just another symptom of our coach's narrow mindedness and stubborness. He is defender and yet he never plays there. Craig is determined to make him into a small forward possibly at the expense of the kids career.

I cant believe there are still people with faith in our coach.

Wouldnt be surprised if Jaensch doesnt play again and delisted at the end of the year. Word out of West Lakes is that his "late night out" didnt go down well with coaching staff at all.

Played some servicable footy, but didnt set the world on fire. Might have burned his one shot.

Damn shame if true ST. Kid can play, could really have been something.

Hope he can convince them with improved behaviour to keep him on!
