I'm definitely a fan of what he brings to the team. I like the fact that opposition defenses are aware that he's around. Stats don't tell the story of his role - and comparing his numbers to an SANFL midfield game just has no relevance. I thought the moment that summed up Pets best on the weekend was the one highlight by Sando in his plays of the week - Merrett is running the ball out of defense and Pets' closes in from nowhere to knock him off of his kick (near the 50 on the boundary line), seconds later he tackles Golby near the goal square. Massive work-rate.

Wow how to become a AFL player run around madly tackling everybody .
When I used to think you needed skill and to get the ball and kick goals or set up goals .
Boy I bet AFL coaches spend a lot of time when playing us about how to stop Petrenko and not let him kick too many goals .
YEs a favourite and after last Qtr efforts will get another 5 games doing nothing again .
Know sounds harsh but just like my AFL forwards to be dangerous around goals or to feed key forwards.

Teams can't have a forward line full of Petrenko-types, but they do need personnel to be putting on forward pressure. It's why the likes of Ballantyne are thought highly by their coaches. Having said that, if Pets could add a little more offence too... but you can't undervalue his 1 %'ers.

Yes understand this pressure thing but Ballantyne , Betts , Rioli etc etc are dangerous and create and get goals .
Problem we have had with Vince - Nutta -- Stiffy -- Porps and Pets there not enough scoreboard pressure but look at their possession numbers up forward

No doubt need a balance/mix of right types up forward - that apply both scoreboard & forward line pressure.

He has kicked 3 goals in 2 games... And has a GA.

Not sure where your first comment comes from. Or the sarcasm - not sure it makes a good argument really. one of the biggest reasons we lost R1 was our lack of intensity on the opposition ball carrier - bombers closed down our time and space and we didnt do the same to them. I think there are some other crows who should perhaps step up their 'running around madly tackling' count.

I call bullshit........ Go count goals in last year's games. How many games did we kick 15+ goals. The team as a whole puts score board pressure on the opposition. When we kicked a bag we rarely lost.....

Callinan kicked 39 goals last year.
Porps kicked 30
Stiffy kicked 19
Pets kicked 16

Ballantyne kicked 31
Betts kicked 48
Rioli kicked 39

I'd say our smalls particularly Callinan and Porps are well in the mix.

Taking into account our dual forward set up last year......
Walker 63
Tippett 39

And our midfield generating goals too....
Sloane 19
Vince 18
VB 13
Wright 15
Dangerfield 23

Ok players rotate through the fwd line etc and my analysis is a bit simplistic, but it kind of nullifies your argument that our smalls are ineffectual.

The actual ability to apply score board pressure is not generally a problem, it's when our structures break down that we lose.

And I don't think the figures from Carlton last year are anything to aspire to.

Betts and Garlett being the leading goal kickers is too much responsibility placed on smalls given the nature of that role in the game.
