Pev Retires

Pev Retires is a nice way of saying despite performances you will be assessed on age and age alone.

Footy really has lost a lot of its warm charm - it is just a business.

Very disappointed. Pev has deserved another year FAR more than Rama. Not trying to have a dig at Rama, but I'll be very confused if Rama goes on at the expense of Pev.

Bit disapointed. I was hoping we'd pick him up for at least one more year as the kids could learn a hell of a lot from witnessing his hard work and commitment. Pretty handy backup too and though his hard work would be putting pressure on the kids for spots, forcing them to match his dedication to play senior footy.

I thought he was a chance to stick around for another year given the way he's played over the last month or so.

Let's face it though, Pev was never going to be part of our next Premiership anyway so I guess this opens the door for another young guy to step up and claim a spot on the list for next season.

Congrats to Pev on a great career anyway. The guy was a warrior. Just went out there and gave it his all every week. Obviously he wasn't the most talented footballer in the world but he had a big heart and never gave up.

A great servant of the EFC....onya Pev!! :thumbsu::thumbsu:

Was starting to find some form in the last month, should have stuck around for atleast one more year :thumbsd:

Choice words indeed. I recall a game against the B Lions at the dome where M.Voss lined him up and gave him everything. Pev got up slowly but shook it off without fanfare.

So what? He worked his arse off, showed some great signs and easily could've stayed on for another year even if it meant limited senior exposure .

Sends the wrong signals to the playing group

Channel 10 didn't come out and make a statement "Peverill retires" it was added into a story about JJ's last games. They also mentioned Rama considering his future.

Knighter said this months ago and has also recently alluded to it.

It shouldn't come as a surprise.

He's been a terrific player for us and was one of the gutsiest players i have seen in recent times and put his body on the line time and time again.

Thanks Pev, you are what footballs clubs are about.

I'm sitting on the fence about the decision, but keep in mind this is the last uncompromised draft for a long time. Thats why it was done.

Congratulations Pev, you would never find a better workhorse. :thumbsu::thumbsu:

I posted this in another thread on the same issue.

It is a tough one but i am very confident it will be well accepted.

Modern footballers are a different animal and are well aware about list management, compromised drafts etc.

We are full of young kids so it will keep open an opportunity for some of them.

I have complete faith in Knights selling his strategy to the players and they appear to have complete faith in him so should embrace or at the very least understand any decisions made.

He won't be there next year.

here's to pev, to a player who got the absolute best out of himself, and a great way to go out while his form is still good, he probably could squeeze good another seaon out, but i think its the right call to go now,

I hope you don't think I was having a thinly veiled shot at him there because I wasn't.

The team is just going in a different direction now.

I'm not going to argue, this thread should be about celebrating Pev's career and everything he has given to the Essendon Football Club over the years.

He has not retired. It was simply a line added to the Jason Johnson story saying Pev and Mal were all retiring and it will be an emotion charged finish to the season. Nothing confirmed even if it may well be true. Mentioned Rama thinking about his future.

He got told to go. Wasnt his choice, if it were he would have stayed for 2009.

your all assuming things here.

peverill has known for a while this will be his last year and his latest month he is giving it everything so he can go out as best he can. what better way to be remembered by bomber fans by putting in a damn good month throwing yourself at the contest and giving it his all.

over 22 rounds even pev would conceded he's probably not capable of doing that anymore.

I can't deny a tear will be shed at the completion of round 22. Jason Johnson and Peverill, may not count as stars in the skills department or whatever, but there must be a word better than star (or superstar) to describe how committed they were for the red and black. My 2 favourite players of the last 6 years or so for simply their dedication to the club and hard at it attitude, i'm sure gonna miss them next year:( Congrats Pev, never got the accolades you deserved.

Loved the way he went about his footy, got the best out of himself and wouldn't take credit for shutting a few top players down helping us to victory. Been a pleasure having him at the club, always wore the red & black with pride and always put his body on the line when needed. Unfortunately the game is getting faster, and he isn't one of the youngest/quickest blokes in the AFL so I understand his retirement call fully. Hopefully he sticks around the club, great person. :thumbsu:

That sucks. I believe he deserved an extra year as he'd been playing pretty well.

Unlucky to miss out on 150 games. He was a very good tagger. All the best in the future [strike]Roger Federer[/strike] Damien Peverill. :thumbsu:

A somewhat disconcerting thread title for a Freo supporter when rapidly scrolling down BF - it looks very similar to Pav Retires

Anyway, while I'm here, well done to Pev. I remember when he first started out and was elevated from the rookie list (for Hird IIRC) and he was pretty good.
