It seems pretty likely we will be getting a gun midfielder in Murphy with pick 1.

Like most people I reckon our most pressing need is for a key defender. A glance down most phantom drafts shows that the expected top 10 are all midfielders or key forwards. The most highly regarded key defenders seem to be players like Spangher and Lucy, who seem to be rated around 15 - 20. Furthermore even early picks are no guarantee of delivering a quality 10 year player. (We have learned this the hard way in the past).

What do people think about trying to trade our pick 4 for two lower first round picks, which we could then use on key defenders, giving us two bites at the cherry?

Here is one possible scenario which I really only offer to illustrate the point - In practice I reckon it would need a fair bit of tweaking to satisfy Brisbane:

We give pick 4 and Lappin to Brisbane.
Bulldogs give a reasonable player (say Eagleton) to Brisbane, and pick 11 to Carlton.
Brisbane give Power to Bulldogs and pick 9 to us.

A more likely scenario would probably one that landed us picks aroound 12 - 15.

If we could arrange something like that we could probably get (for example) Lucy AND Spangher for pick 4 (maybe with us throwing a fringe player in).

What I DONT want to see is us use pick 4 on a Hurn or a Dowler, and bank on snatching Lucy or Spangher at 20, only to see them both go at 18 and 19.

I don't rate any of the specialist key defenders all that greatly, We would be better of taking a versitile tall like Kennedy at pick four and going for the best player with pick twenty.

Bad idea considering we will get another 1st round draft pick thorugh the sale of Lance. Top 10 draftees are better than Top 20 draftees and frankly if Hurn slipped down to 4 and we had traded our pick...I would be furious.

I say take what is the best on offer. If they are midfielders take them but if they are forwards or backs take them. Don't pass on the best in search of players to fill up the holes, it can backfire eg. Tim Walsh with the Bulldogs.

I have seen him play a few times and think he is a very good prospect.
I see he is down at 32 in FootyDraft.

I think he will go inside the top 20.

Wait on Hurn, everyone is counting their chickens too early. If his draft camp results are ok and his OP is under control (or better - GONE) then maybe. We need a Josh Kennedy type who can swing between CHF and CHB with aggression and can take pack marks regularly. He is tall enough and seems well built (193cm/93kg before the draft camp).

Having said this, if Hurn's OP, fitness and speed test ok then we would need him and along with Murphy as they appear to be 10 year genuine midfielders who have great skills, great leadership, great vision, great hands and have a touch of class.

It's a close call but:
1. Murphy
4. Hurn > Kennedy

We definitely need another top 12 pick if possible. We would then hopefully get a big fella in Hughes, Clark, Kennedy, Ryder or Dowler - mayeb one of those will slip a a little. If Trent West (197cm ruck/forward) is around at pick 20 he should be a priority for us.

they have him down everywhere as 188cm, but hes definateky taller. Whitnall's only 190cm, and with Hurns versatility, agility and smarts, i think he is a definite goer. he is a utility player (a bit like kouta of Chad Cornes), so will be valuable to any side.

We are in dire need of a pacy, strong, well buitl defender because Thornton and Livingston seem to get man hadled too easily IMO. Here is where Lucy or Spohanger can come in, but I'd prefer Lucy because I know what he is capable of. We need some defenders, and we too use our early picks to help our weakest part of the team, which is the defensive line.

Depends what happens in trade week. If we get Polak or Saddington, then we should try and get Hurn.

Thanks for your thoughts people - even if none of you agree with me. I agree that if we trade Whitnall for 11 or 12 this may give us the defender we need. Also a few people have been praising Kennedy over the last few days, in and out of this thread. Maybe:
Murphy 1
Kennedy 4
Lucy/Spangher 11 or 12
Best available (whatever) 20?

We also may have an extra second round pick in the 20s for Lappin.

Read it again..our backline is our weakest link, and this is the reason why we need to snap Lucy up with our second pick, he's the best defender in the draft, we need a key defender, so let's take advantage of our high picks and snap him up before other clubs do. Remember, our back-line is our weakest link.

I agree with you that our backline is the weakest link yet that doesn't mean we should use Pick 4 to snap up a player that is worth around a Pick 15. Carlton's midfield isn't exactly state of the art and we had the opportunity to take a guy like Hurn then we need to do that.
Frankly I would want Carlton to grab a guy like Lucy or Spangher at Pick 20 or maybe Pick 12 but we are not a team that just needs a 'quick fix' through a defender and thats why its best avaliable talent with Picks 1 and 4.
