Looks like we migth be taking Marc Murphy at pick 1 so who do you all think we should take with pick 4? Cheers.

one of the KPP, dont know which one is the stand out, but any of the big blokes.

Josh Kennedy / Shannon Hurn (depending on the trades and the players available in PSD)

The best avaliable talent simple as that.
Assuming Ellis goes at no2, and the Hawks pass on Hurn then I believe we should take Hurn as he is best avaliable.
Otherwise we can grab one of Ryder/Kennedy.

Ryder if he is taller than 194cms when measured at draft camp.

Hurn if not.

I'll say Hurn, Kennedy or Clark depending on what happens at draft camp and who gets taken at 2 and 3. Any of those guys should be quite good.

I think Hurn can turn out to be a player liek Mcphee. But we need a KPP, so id take Ryder.

McPhee? The quick running machine with the big leap?

Cameron Ling, Luke Hodge, Josh Hunt yes a bit like them. But not McPhee.

Xavier Ellis.

I just have a feeling that Hawthorn want Ryder and Collingwood want Hurn. Don't put your house on it, but i wouldn't be suprised if we snared him with pick 4.

Something tells me that the Hawks won't make the same mistake twice...

Hawthorn's picks last year were great IMO. Tambling will be a super player but I also think Roughead, Franklin and Lewis will also be super players. Taking Roughead ahead of Tambling was a tough one but all three of the Hawk's picks played great 1st years for them in 05.

In this draft they will probably go 1 tall and 1 onballer with picks 3 and 6. It's so hard to tell. They may take either Ryder, Dowler of Kennedy at 3 and then a Swallow or Varcoe at 6 if available. They still need a goal kicker so Dowler and Kennedy would be on top of the shopping cart, maybe Dowler at the top with Varcoe running 2nd. They would fill a couple of needs for them.

They already have:
Roughead - 193cm CHB/CHF
Franklin - 196cm FF/CHF
Boyle - 193cm key forward/defender
Dawson - 195cm key defender
Croad - 190cm CHB/CHF
Hay - 196cm FB

Add one of Dowler (192cm CHF), Kennedy (193cm CHF/CHB), Ryder (194cm ruckman/key forward) or Clark (197cm CHF/FF/ruckman) and they are building up a spine of KPP that are extremely talented. Add a speedy oballer in Swallow, Ellis or Varcoe and they are going to be a real force for a while. They may even trade Hay and/or Crawford for more draft picks also.

Kennedy looks good, wishful thinking that Ellis would still be available at 4...

Heard a few different opinions on Hurn, so not convinced on him yet... Ryder seems a bit hit and miss

I meant picking Roughead over Griffen...

Wait for draft camp results Paddy.
The measurements we go on are taken at the start of the year. Now 8 months later things might well have changed.

Bottom aged players like Varcoe, Ellis and Ryder might well be a bit taller now and therefore changes the order of the draft. Let alone the actually physical testing which will help as well in seperating a few.

Yeah definitely mate. We can only go on what we see and hear up to this stage. In your opinion mojo, who do you liken Murphy, Hurn and Kennedy to?

Murphy > Ben Cousins.

Hard running, shortish, well built, quick but not express. Good skills but not great. Complete player. Inside and outside. Would have Murphy as better at clearances and Cousins a little bit quicker and with a huge aerobic capacity that only 2 or 3 in the league can match that Murphy might never get close to.

Hurn > Cameron Ling

with the kicking skills of Josh Hunt. Like Ling he has very good hands over head. Does not fumble. Big body. Kicks the ball like Hunt. Maybe not quite as well but not far off.
Pace is the same as Ling but hopefully he can improve with a pre season and no OP. Would not read the play as well as Ling who is an absolute gun at that.

Kennedy > Leppitsch (when he started his career), Earl Spalding, Ian Perrie.

Hardest one to come up with a match. Big bloke. His coach says he has been on a big weights program and he is listed at 93kgs but probably have to add a few more to that. Contested marking player. Physical. Already 18 and fully grown most likely. Good kick for goal. Not overly quick but reasonable.
Competitive and likes body contact. Mixing it well with men in the WAFL seniors. Tape on the shoulders already though.
I would see him as a bit of a Jayrd Roughead type. KPP but who knows where. Just like Roughead has played CHF/FF/CHB/FB this year Kennedy will probably do the same next year until they find where he plays best.
CHB for mine.

in that order from me for Pick 4.
God no! I'm not impressed with him enough to take him ahead of the best bigmen in this draft.Take a look at West Coast's combination of speed in the midfield and height with 3 mobile ruckmen, and then tell me this isn't the way to go!

Hurn and Murphy are ready to go though. Personally I'd love to see them in the line-up for Round 1. :)

Does anyone else have a gut feeling the Hawks will take Kennedy Hay possibly on the way out? I won't be happy if he is the player we are targeting and the Hawks snag him.I'd prefer Carlton to then take Clark ATM until they run the tape over them at draft camp . ;)

Depends if it is Hay + pick 22 for Polak. I think it is either Ryder or Kennedy for them.
Kennedy if I was a betting man.

Ryder for us over Hurn is what I think the club will do. Not my preference but I do think Ryder is the best 'tall' in the draft.
The question mark is whether the 'tall' is a KPP or just a flanker who floats around.

Ask me in 3 years and I will be able to tell you. Until then its all a guess even for Wayne Hughes.

Thanks mojo. Again, awesome insight. I get the feeling the rounded, mature-type youngsters are what we need at the club at the moment. Like those three already mentioned in Murphy, Hurn and Kennedy. They are maturing well, playing well in big games and are leaders. Guys like Walker, Simpson and Russell are very exciting, flashy, quick players we desperatley need but I like the rounded, mature-types in Murphy, Hurn, Kenendy and Marcus Drum. I hope we get 2 of these guys and maybe even 3 via a trade.

I like:
1. Murphy
4. Kennedy>Hurn
8-12. Drum

I also want to ask you about 3 key defenders in this year's draft in Spangher, Bower and Lucy. How do you rate them each out of 10? I have heard some very exciting things about Paul Bower as an attacking CHB, we really need this! He is developing nicely and is 192cm. He may even be a little taller now so the draft camp results will tell us more about him and the other two.

Just as an aside the WAFL colts final has just been played. Peel vs East Freo and Peel got up.

Kennedy and Ryder played. Ryder was named in the best players. Kennedy was not. He only kicked 1 goal.
Bower was named in the best players. I am assuming he took Kennedy so thats a big feather in his cap beating Josh.
Gumbleton kicked 3 for Peel and was named in the best players.
Another gun not available until next year.

I really liked Sphanger in the U18s when I went to the games and watched them on tape later. Really provides great run and is very very athletic. Cant judge him after that as he has been injured and has OP so has played 1 game possibly 2 since then.
The other 2 in Lucy and Bower I have only seen in the U18s as they dont play in the TAC cup.

From what I have seen. Bower is quick and agile. Runs off his bloke and creates an option. Takes players on.
KPP defender? Not sure. Not very strong and can be to attacking. Not so good in contested situations. Maybe a tall athletic HBF at this stage.

Lucy is much stronger and better as more developed as KPP defender at this stage. Pretty athletic. Strong. Big body. Uses it well. Natural defender.
Did not like a few of his kicks in the carnival and decision making.

Spangher> Lucy> Bower for me.
