Just as an aside the WAFL colts final has just been played. Peel vs East Freo and Peel got up.

Kennedy and Ryder played. Ryder was named in the best players. Kennedy was not. He only kicked 1 goal.
Bower was named in the best players. I am assuming he took Kennedy so thats a big feather in his cap beating Josh.
Gumbleton kicked 3 for Peel and was named in the best players.
Another gun not available until next year.

I really liked Sphanger in the U18s when I went to the games and watched them on tape later. Really provides great run and is very very athletic. Cant judge him after that as he has been injured and has OP so has played 1 game possibly 2 since then.
The other 2 in Lucy and Bower I have only seen in the U18s as they dont play in the TAC cup.

From what I have seen. Bower is quick and agile. Runs off his bloke and creates an option. Takes players on.
KPP defender? Not sure. Not very strong and can be to attacking. Not so good in contested situations. Maybe a tall athletic HBF at this stage.

Lucy is much stronger and better as more developed as KPP defender at this stage. Pretty athletic. Strong. Big body. Uses it well. Natural defender.
Did not like a few of his kicks in the carnival and decision making.

Spangher> Lucy> Bower for me.

Thanks again mojo. In regards to Lucy, can he play CHB and be mobile and agile enough? We need someone to be able to play both FB and CHB IMO if we draft for a key defender.

I think Allan Obst has been really underrated as a tall defender and will be a great pick-up later in the draft.

I'd probably agree on the Spangher/Lucy/Bower assessment of Mojo from what I've seen.

Yes Lucy can in my opinion. You know what I think already.

Take Spangher or Lucy with pick 20 depending on who is available. I am worried about Hartlett and him getting injured all the time. There was a query on him beofre getting drafted on that and so far he has had 2 bad injuries in his first year.
Livingston also who looked like he had really improved went backwards towards the end of the season and is a real worry.

Thornton also has gone backwards and perhaps he is just a flanker.

Got to give them all time but when it was all said and done the defenders were terrible this year including Teague.
So we need to plan for that by taking at least 1 tall who can play back in this draft. It will take them a few years to come on so best to do it now.

Setanta is not a backmen in my opinion so I have not included him.

I dont see Drum as a HBF either. Would not pigeon hole him there. Just a complete player who can play anywhere. 190cm utility. He has nothing in common with Vance, Massie types. Drum has skills and reads the play and is a very good mark. Dont see him as a undersized KPP just a very good footballer who just happens to be 6 foot 3.

Depends if it is Hay + pick 22 for Polak. I think it is either Ryder or Kennedy for them.
Kennedy if I was a betting man.

Ryder for us over Hurn is what I think the club will do. Not my preference but I do think Ryder is the best 'tall' in the draft.
The question mark is whether the 'tall' is a KPP or just a flanker who floats around.

Ask me in 3 years and I will be able to tell you. Until then its all a guess even for Wayne Hughes.
We've got Murphy so we shouldn't be too annoyed that the Hawks and Pies tanked. But like last year Hawthorn have the advantage of taking other clubs by surprise with Murphy and Ellis pencilled in for 1 and 2.

If the Hawks punt on Clark as the best bigman Ryder or Kennedy may still fall to them at pick 6.Since I doubt the Blues will overlook one of Kennedy, Hurn or Ryder and the Pies don't need any more tall players unless there's a Cloke available. And West Coast, Port, Brisbane and Sydney are all smart enough to have 4 good ruckmen on their lists. But like all of these theories it's just Pie in the Sky and filler for all media! :o

We need backmen really badly so i think they should go for the best available in that category if there isn't much difference....This would be a dream for me....

Pick 1: Murphy
Pick 2: Hurn/Kennedy
Pick 3: Sphangher / Lucy
Pick 4: Kelleher/Wayde Mills
Pick 5: Alan Toovey/Another midfielder

That way we get 3 or 4 real good backmen through the draft who should all come together in 4 years or so and will really stabilise our defence, then next year we can add some more midfielders which will be easier to find....

I have no idea what Hawthorn are thinking, or Collingwood.

Ellis may not be able to play next year, and Hurn is a ready made player, so they may even take Hurn at 2. Meaning Hawthorn will take Ellis at 3.

If Collingwood take Ellis... I'm unsure whether Hawthorn will go for Hurn, unless he is obviously the best available, as we aren't desperate for his type of player, I wouldn't mind picking him up at all, but we might the key position player we want at three, knowing that Hurn or one of Ryder/Kennedy will still be available at 6.

Even though we hold lower picks, I think much of this draft will rely on what Hawthorn decide to do. I feel there may be a big surprise come draft day.... again.

I reckon the Hawks are going to put the cat amongst the pigeons again at this draft and there's no doubt they'll shape the draft.Bloody tankers!

Shannon Hurn IMO. Carlton boy at heart (therefore will play for geurnsey), ready made big bodied RR/C/HBF. Not small at 190cm and could replace Kouta for clearances. Him and Bentick working in tandem with Murphey, Stevens, Simpson, Campo, Kouta and wishfully Power we could have a bloody awesome midfield. Plus he has the skills to het Fev on the chest from a distance, therefore i think he'll be the best talent AND the best suited to the club.

I believe that carlton will take a player such as Dowler or Ben Mckinnely. U need another foward line player. With Whittnal and Fev being used as trade bait, maybe thats whats in mind for the guys from Optus

Carlton will get the best avliable talent with Pick 4 whether it be Hurn or one of Ryder/Kennedy. Carlton dont need another forward line player at all. If Lance gets traded but Fev stays (what I think will happen) we will have Fev, Waite, Fisher and Betts in our forward line. On the otehr hand our defence and midfield need much more work.

I must have been watching a different national championships. I thought Sphanger's kicking was terrible and I wouldn't want him ahead of Bower. I thought Bower looked superb, athletic with a lot of upside. I am very surprised Bower is not more highly rated. Must not be going that well in Perth? Yet he keeps getting in the best.....?

I reckon the forward line is probvably the ony place where we dont need to recruit for- Fevola, Whitnall, Waite, Fisher and Betts with Walker, Longmuir, De Luca and Morrell that can all pinch hit for a couple of goals. We DEFINATELY need a CHB to support Thornton (e.g. Polak) and a few big bodies in the midfield. To compliment our established midfielders (Stevens, Kouta and Scotland), Murphy, Blackwell, Russell, Simpson, Smith and Hartlett are all youngsters with alot of speed, so I dont think that will be an issue. I think we are also covered in the ruck stocks with the likes of French, Bryan, De Luca and the elevation of Nick Becker to assist there (although if an established ruckman like Ackland last year are available in the PSD then we should pick them up). With all of that in mind I feel Hurn fits the mould for our future midfield that you would hope will consist of Hurn, Murphy, Stevens, Bentick, Russell, Simpson and Blackwell.

Becker is a midfielder, Batson is the one you are thinking of.

How about Clarke??

Is there enough upside on him to draft him as a forward/ruckman??

Yeah there is... but the concern is that he's dropped off from the potential he's shown previously in his junior career

Wait for draft camp results Paddy.
The measurements we go on are taken at the start of the year. Now 8 months later things might well have changed.

Bottom aged players like Varcoe, Ellis and Ryder might well be a bit taller now and therefore changes the order of the draft. Let alone the actually physical testing which will help as well in seperating a few.

Draft camp results.

Mitch Clark 198.1cms
Patrick Ryder 195.7 cms
Kennedy 195.1 cms

All three players have grown.

Thanks mojo, your a champion. Really appreciate it!

I just made a therad on the Drafts/Trades post about where I can get the heights and weights from. Can you have a look at this please mate.

Ryder - around the 196cm mark - tallenough I think to ruck (Troy Simmonds height, Cain Ackland height)
Kennedy - pick 4 now?
Clark - must be huge and mobile?

Lucy also tested very very well. Great leap and 20m sprint result.

Kennedy or Ryder are pick 4 now. Depends who Hawthorn take. We take the other 1 in my opinion.

Ryder at just under 196 and still likely to grow more is at worst a pinch hitting ruckman and a very big and mobile KPP if he can play there.

I think Hurn would have dropped down the order now.

Top 5 has to be

Murphy
Ellis
Ryder/Kennedy/Clark
Hurn

Let the other teams have pick 7 plus and take chances on the others.
Murphy and 1 tall does me fine.
