First off, let me declare that I am VERY happy with our draft performance this year.

Gibbs - was a given at #1

Hampson - Best ruckman in the draft after Luenberger, was tipped to go at #8/#10 to Collingwood should Reid have not been there.

Grigg - Why not?, averaging around 24 possies a game, had an outstanding carnival, looks a solid type

Austin - was a top 5-10 selection in December 2005, was a certainty to play CHB for SA in the championships before he broke his leg. Recruiters had him as a 20ish selection

.......... etc

The only complaint that I could have with our recruiting this year, was overlooking Rhyce Prismall at pick #81. 2nd in the Jets best and fairest, his brother is a decent sort for the Cats. At 188.2 cm another tall midfield type. Reports ripe that he is to be a top 20 selection in the 2007 draft. Word is (according to Matt Burgan) that both us and Geelong were intrested in him this year.

This leads me to question: did we purposely overlook him with the intention of picking up another ruckman in the PSD ? Perhaps we already have one lined up ?

Did we overlook him for Ty Zantuck  ??

Whatever the reason - with all his credentials (or might likely potential), seems bizzare that we would overlook him with our final pick of the draft.

correct me if I'm wrong but I believe we couldn't use pick 81 based on the fact that Chris Byran was still on our list

I think we could still take him, as we had a spare spot on the list as Ackland hasn't been drafted. Then we could have delisted Bryan, which would have given us the pick in the PSD for Ackland.

Very true, then I am not sure why didn't use this pick

Question to anyone that knows: Did Zantuck nominate for the ND?

Why did every club overlook Prismall if he is so talented and a sure thing to be a top 20 pick next year?

He might have talent but the last thing we need is another skinny 188 cm runner who you have to sign for two years. They said the same thing about Raso in 2004 and we now has more talented kids on the list who appear more likely to make it as wingmen or utility than Anthony.

Why did Port and St Kilda clubs draft a couple of retreads ahead of Prismall if he's so talented?

We need to draft a player who is physically mature in the PSD given the number of skinny kids we have on the list and can play next year. But I'd prefer we invest in another ruckman or a well built kid like Batsanis ahead of Zantuck.

I agree on everything here.
We need to be competitive next year too with some mature body depth...and would prefer another ruckman with PSD 2# or a mature midfielder plus Jamieson in the rookie draft. After the large clean out this year, and the injection of youth last year, there is risk of over doing the youth policy. No point picking up raw kids hoping to develop them over 3-4 years (like a Simpson for example) then being forced to play them due to injuries...they will only get injured or lose confidence, likely to be delisted prematurely as people say "our last round of recruiting was crap, we need a new injection of quality youth." (I think Smith was a little unlucky in this regard)...in the meatime we would be getting slaughtered and losing confidence (some players might even request to be traded!!!)...especially if we have a worse run than last year with injuries to our top players.

Nah
As long as Ty Zantuck has proven his left that crap behind him (u know his off field indiscretions etc) and can prove he can play consistent aggresvie football at the highest level (which he did at Richmond but not Essendon) then I would welcome he abord at Carlton as frankly I'd rather a tough, hard player in our backline then a soft, pretty boy with shocking disposal in David Teague.
I'm sure Teague's a nice guy, but in terms of footballing ability, Zantuck is streets ahead of him IMHO.

Fine......so its settled. We'll take Zantuck next year if he can spend 1 year on good behaviour, and replace Teague with him. Everyone happy? Good.

Celtic Pride..Teague certainly isnt my fav player on our list but i would NEVER call him "SOFT" , clearly you never watch too many games , especially where he regularly backed into backs , eyes purely for the ball and also consider his size. He has been quite courageous at times.

Teague won the players award for most courageous in 2004.
Crap skills, not soft though.

Yeah well I would still rather have Zantuck then Teague regardless Teague is a courageous player true, but has a very timid nature and not enough aggression in the backline that Zantuck would bring to the club.
Still reckon we gave up too early on Karl Norman as well, I mean as long as they don't bring the drugs or other off field issues to the club then that's okay.
Lets face it though he would be worth the risk IMHO.

Worth the risk?
What is the massive upside that would stop you from picking the next best young kid, or someone like Jamieson who is busting his butt to play?

Ty has had two chances, blew them both. We (should) have learned from Norman and Angwin that there are too many fish in the ocean to waste spots on guys who care more about partying than playing football.

Vote no on Zantuck.
