Fremantle over the past few seasons have had a pretty aggresive style at the trading table and frankly with Conolly and Schwab in charge I think it will continue.
So the question is do we trade for ready made players or do we trade for lower draft picks.
With varing success from each what does everyone think we should aim for?
Personally I think our best players have come directly from drafting (other than bell).
And with drafting ready made players we seem to have a 50/50 strike rate.
Though that said where hardly rebuilding a side and should be looking short term.

CC has stated publicly that they wont be very active in the trade this year, the focus is on developing what we have. That being said he does want some one like Josh Carr if the price is right.

We shouldn't trade away our first pick, we should use it to get Jacob Surjan. Peake might be alright as a father son selection, but he needs to fill out a bit more.

I've got a feeling we might try and get Brett Johnson from the hawks, possibly for a second round pick or a fringe player.

I still think that most of our needs can be filled from within.
On the rookie list we have Gilmore (8th best Possien getter in the wafl, although his form dropped of from midway though the season) Steven Dodd who looks a likely type from what I have seen, And if we pick up young Peake (father/ son) we will have the bloke who has racked up the 3rd most tackles in the WAFL this year (ave over 5 a game) who has got better and better as the year went on (His first serious year of footy).
Combine that with continued improvement from Webster & Schammer and a couple of handy draft picks and we will not want for much except experience playing together and despite CC trying to fast track there is no substitute for that.

Bring on 2004

Freo Docker I'm interested, why such the high opinion of Surjan?? Moody and Ray seem to be the fad players to pick up, do you know something we dont?

I think CC will stick to the plan unless an out & out good player steps up to the plate for a decent price. Where our defincencies lie may be where we are waiting for Schammer & Browne to grow up physically & mentally.

On Surjan, I don't think that we will be able to pick up Ray and I see Surjan to be a similar type of midfielder. While he needs to bulk up a bit, I could really see him developing into the in and under midfielder we need. I have seen him play a few times and kept an eye on the stats in the colts. He's been consistantly getting over 20 possies a game and has a good eye for goal.

Another roughie for our first pick could be Matt Spencer, he just won the colts BF and is already a decent size.

Has anyone seen Peter McGennisken play for peel colts. He was pretty much on par with Ray in terms of stats in the colts, but I haven't seen him in action?

I agree with FreoDocker Ray & Bradely will be gone early I think Matt Spencer & Jacob Surjan would be great picks. I prefer Matt Spencer I have been following his progress through School & Colts and he will be a very good player.

Undertaker I doubt he'll go top 20 to be honest. Therefore I disagree with you saying Fremantle would consider him for their first pick. I tend to agree moreso with Freo Docker's p.o.v. Pick players to suit the needs of the team.

Saying that I'm a huge Spencer fan and can't speak highly enough of him. Met him a few times and is very well spoken and a very good football player.

Freo Docker McGennisken isn't too bad a player, myself i prefer Richardson from Swan Districts.

What do you think about either of the WA clubs drafting a bloke like Brad Smith from Subi. It worked pretty well with Medhurst a few years back and I don't think it would be a bad option to pick him up with a 4th or 5th round pick?

Yeah it's an interesting one to say the least FD. People would of said Zane Parsons when he was in goal kicking form too.

With Brad Smith, if he is a potential draftee, as you said at 4th or 5th round pick, you have to ask yourself who do you leave out of the team for Smith?

If you can find the answer to that one then draft him by all means and take a punt! He's been in great form this year.

Yeh, I was just thinking that way because of our short list. Perhaps rather than trying to develop a forward from the start (through the backline) we should recruit a mature age forward to play on a 1st year players wage.

I think there's a crying need for a full forward who kicks a regular bag of 3 or 4 week in week out.

Smith could be the man, worth a punt FD

Smith reminds me a bit of Heatley.
Kicks goals at WAFL, mature age, picked up at WCE, not considered good at AFL, goes on and kicks 80 goals at another club.
Smith will go in the draught whether its with us who knows.
