News Pie Reid starts contract talks

COLLINGWOOD key defender Ben Reid has opened talks with the club about a new contract, and says he hopes to sign before the end of the season.

Reid, along with a number of other Magpies stars, is out of contract at the end of 2012, but says he is keen to stay.

"I'm pretty happy where I am at the moment," Reid told radio 3AW on Tuesday night.

"There's been some talks, but it'll take care of itself between the club and my manager.

"Hopefully it'll get done [before the end of the year]."

Saying the Right Thing by saying he wants it done by end of the Season.

Last but saying Hopefully it get done. I think it could be done by end of the Month.

Glad he did not go the Cloke Way

Good to hear about Reid, and in saying that I still don't think the club will lose one of their key players. If they lose someone it'll be a fringe player looking for better opportunities or being grossly overpaid.

imo cloke is more likely to stay than Reid. very much a family man with all his family in Melbourne. not sure how close Reid is to his family but brother of a similar age in Sydney. really hope we keep them both and i would be ecstatic

I would love to see Trav and Reidy stay, but I can't imagine how we'd be able to keep either and juggle our bulging salary cap at the same time. I'm not saying they're going to go, but it's going to take some cap wizardry.

Would he have met the Dalai Lama if he was a GWS or Gold Coast player? Probably not.

As I've said all along if we lose anyone, it will be a fringe player, we won't lose any stars.

The names I wouldn't want to lose are the youngsters on that list, Keefe, Fasolo and Ceglar, and the best current player is Wellingham.

Tarrant, Shaw Caff and Krak aren't going anywhere due to age and circumstances, so that leaves Ugle, Goldy and Young as the other targets on that list.

If any of the kids or those possible names were offered 500K + we would lose them for sure, it would be a Callan Ward like situation.

Look, GWS aren't about to go for mediocre players when they still have the option of front-ending contracts.

The only one of those they would have a crack at is Wellingham, possibly.

They'd be gunning for a KP player, schmick mid or ruck, not chancey small forwards, sub players and shanky kicks.

I think we offer Reid a handsome two year deal with the offer of a massive back-ended 3 year deal after that. Cloke maybe a four year with some handsome back-end for the last two.

Everyone on that list is a must keep apart from Young, Goldy & Ugle.

If they prove themselves this year, then sign them up. Except Young...he's a bum!

Clokey is the only one that concerns me at all.

I'm hoping it's that he (or rather his Dad!) knows his market value is huge right now and it's the strongest bargaining position he will be in for his entire career. From our point of view we want him to sign now and get it over and done with.

But from his point of view there's no rush at all.
