I was in the UK in 2002 and watching EPL on Sky you had the ability to choose the regular or fan commentary.
Fan commentary gave you a somewhat biased and irreverent commentary style.

There was an article in today's Age talking about Ricky Gervais planing a live alternate commentary for the Golden Globes this year that got me thinking.

Article:

With the ability through websites like Shoutcast.com to create your own radio stream and the advent of all games live on Fox Sports in 2012 would people be interested in organizing a live internet radio commentary for Pies games.
By the Fans and for the Fans.

There are enough articles on here about Robert Walls, Tim lane and co. talking absolute rubbish on the TV.
Yes I know they will be getting the arse as Seven will have the exclusive rights next year but I am sure we will all find commentators that we despise.

If anyone has an tech know how or fancies themselves as a decent and amusing commentator let me know what you think.:thumbsu::thumbsdown:

Great idea, sorry I dont have the skills to help, but will definately tune in if you get it off the ground. Glad to see the end of Tim Lane (hopefully) and there are plenty more that drive me mad.

Someone get on board, would be great for us interstate and overseas supporters.

Shellz you win the award for best avatar (by the way Im female)

Would be near impossible to do with no delay. Even Triple M web streams have a delay of a couple of seconds.

Apart from that, I'm all for it.

I'm sure you could time shift it a few seconds - i.e. watch on a few seconds delay while the computer audio comes through.

A mob you might want to look at as inspiration would be http://www.testmatchsofa.com

These guys worked in IT, got retrenched (or left their jobs) but thought they'd prefer to commentate cricket for a living. So they did. In order to listen to the game you need to basically record the live game, press pause for a few seconds and it's all good.

A hard thing that I would want to do to make it better would be to remove the commentators but have live sound (it's possible I think but it's difficult - basically involves doing left minus right in terms of sound I think). Test match sofa is funny but loses a bit without the sounds. They make up for it by playing different sounds when players start batting or bowling. It works for cricket (somewhat) but it wouldn't for footy at all.

Another thing would be to set up a blog (or even a thread here) which had multiple streams depending on what commentary you wanted to listen to (we all have different styles)

Finally the setup to have multiple commentators is doable, but at a good quality would need some technical knowhow, and good communication. The pros are in that position because they know when the next person is going to speak, and so handover really well.

But yeah, I'd like to see if this gets legs during the year. Sounds fun.

I hadn't factored in sounds of the game but that is a huge part of the commentary. Was thinking about canned background noise but that doesn't really cut it.
Thanks for the heads up on the cricket mob i'll check it out.
