Back in 2009 Vidmar called Adelaide a 'pissant town'... well I would say we are a pissant state. With the recent woes of just about every sporting club in the state, I thought I would have a look at the numbers and see how we stack up against the rest of the country.
I looked at 4 major sports (not the NRL since we don't have a side in it. Those sports are AFL, Soccer, Cricket and Basketball. In total there were 146 pieces of silverware up for grabs since 2000, so how do we fare?
South Australian teams have combined for a measly 7 pieces of silverware from 17 grand finals. Tasmania have also achieved 7 pieces of silverware from 14 grand finals. The difference being, Tasmania dont have an AFL or Soccer side, and only recently joined in the NBL, but are out performing SA clubs immensely.
Each South Australian club has averaged 1 premiership and just under 2.5 grand final appearances since 2000. Barring Tasmania, every other club in the other states has averaged more than double the amount of premierships, with WA sides averaging a whopping 3.8 premierships each since 2000.
Clubs in every state will average a premiership in under 10 years... except SA clubs who take on average 21 years for a premiership.
Victorian teams win 64% of their grand finals, WA 63%, NSW 61%, Qld 58%, Tas 50% and SA only 41%.
The state that is most alike SA would be WA - both have 2 AFL, 1 Soccer, 1 Big Bash and 1 State cricket and 1 NBL side. People have recently been talking about how travel from WA takes it toll on those players, year the WA sides have combined for 26 premierships from 41 grand finals. They have won more than we have played in.
So what is it about South Australia that makes us so inept on the national stage? How can we change it?
Some of it I believe is how weak our media is, and how the attitude seems to be that as long as the team isn't last then that's fine. Some of it would be the boys club that happens in SA (and I know it happens everywhere) where we are too scared to hurt our mates feelings so we accept poor performances.
Something has to give and change needs to be made in the attitude of the state towards its teams, otherwise we will continue to be the laughing stock of the country, and before we know it the Tassie team will have more premierships than both the SA sides.
