PLAYER QUALIFICATION FOR SFL FINAL SERIES
SENIOR/RESERVE GRADE-2009

A player must play a minimum 6 CLUB GAMES to qualify for
SENIOR or RESERVE grade finals in ALL DIVISIONS.

A player must play 4 of the 6 CLUB GAMES in the Reserves to be
ELIGIBLE to play RESERVE grade finals in ALL DIVISIONS.

A player who plays in 10 OR MORE senior games is INELIGIBLE to
play RESERVE grade finals in ALL DIVISIONS.

A player (Under 19 years as at 01.01.09) is ELIGIBLE to play in
either grade irrespective of SENIOR or RESERVE games played in
ALL DIVISIONS as long as he has played 6 CLUB GAMES.

A player can be selected in either SENIOR or RESERVE grade in
ALL DIVISIONS if both grades are playing on the same weekend
as long as they have played 6 CLUB GAMES.

A player ELIGIBLE to play Senior, Reserve or Colts grade finals
may only play ONE MATCH per finals round.

*Qualification rulings for Senior/Reserve grades 2009 have

been summarised based on the SFL By-laws.

Read this of the Internet site, the one question I have regards points 3 & 5

If a player plays 12 senior games, but gets dropped before the finals, Can he play reserves finals??

1.Can he play reserves finals if the teams are playing on the same weekend

2. If he has been dropped, can he play finals if the team is playing on seperate weekends???

I understand he cant play week 1 in the seniors and week 2 in the reserves, but if he has played more than 10 senior games but loses his spot, can he play reserves finals in a bid to get his spot back???

i think it is saying the player must have played between 6-10 games to play seniors if dropped. highly doubt a player would be dropped if played more than 10 games with the seniors...
also would be pretty stupid from the club to play a verge player more than 10 games if the player was just filling a spot for an injured player. cause then the player will be a waste come finals if the player injured comes back from playing probably a min of 6 games to qualify.

To question 1, yes if on the same weekend can play either seniors or ressies.
To question 2, no he cant, which leaves the conundrum of what to do with some borderline players who while consistent performers, might not be in your best 22 com finals time. This problem seems to arise around this time every year and probably needs to be addressed by the league. Its not fair on a player brought in to cover injury only to be dropped and then not even be eligible for ressies.

Its not the leagues fault, clubs need to manage their teams better than what they have.
After years of total stuff ups on our part, Chelt have for the last two years had a excel spreadsheet set up so that every week the info is updated and the match committee know exactly who has played what and if need be, which players need to be qualified etc...

It definitely helps but at the end of the day, you pick your best side and if a bloke misses out and is over qualified for reserves finals, its just bad luck.

did the league give this info out before today to clubs? it would've made sense to give the info out at the start of the season..

Pretty sure its exactly the same as last year and clubs would have been informed of this at the start of the year.

Fair enough then, it then shows who are the smarter clubs with using there players, im sure most clubs would be keeping track of when players play. and good to see chelt are on top of it.
I see st kilda city were careful with matt harris..played a few senior games at the start of the year yes? and with a side like they have it will barely go unchanged later in the year unless injuries occur. correct me if im wrong..

Could probably call myself an expert on this rule after the debacle of last year! I do note that it was supposed to be changed after last years finals but still seems the same. To answer your question Mr Madman first things first you must play a minimum of 6 games for your club. After this if you play 10 or more senior games you are illeligible to play reserve grade football unless your seniors and reserves play on the same day, not the same finals round ie: second semi and first semi. There is a clause that states (and this is how Brady played last year) that if the club can show that due to injury or unforseen circumstances they would not be able to field a full side a submission can be made to the league to allow an over quallified player to be selected. What is regarded as a full side 22, 18 or 16 is open to interpretation.
Hope this Helps!:D:thumbsu:

If I read correctly. An under 18 player can play no senior or reserves games but can come up and play finals for either. Could make for some interesting selections. If so teams could bring 5 or so U/18s in to there reserves side for finals.

It works the same the other way as well Mene Gene. Colts players that had played all year in the reserves/seniors could go back and play colts finals as long as they were born after a certain date.
I know Hampton weren't too happy when Chelt ran out on Grand Final day with five players that had played most of the year in the seniors (played 5 games early in the colts), but as I see it, if they are eligible and have been good enough to play seniors, they shouldn't be penalised by not being allowed to go back and play with their own age.

Agreed, a Colts player shouldn't miss the reward of playing in the senior team just because clubs are worried about finals qualifications...
