Player Review vs Hawks

People with short memories are infuriating at the best of times.
Three weeks ago Jolly tore Freo to shreds, and now suddenly he is apparently shit. Today wasn't his best game but neither Hale nor Roughead did anything spectacular. The current all Australian ruckmen would be Maric and Jacobs, and somehow no-one remembers that Jolly beat both convincingly. His Anzac Day performance when he took Ryder and Bellchambers to the cleaners is also apparently insignificant. His two games against Geelong were also quite good.

Just becuase we have a shit day doesn't mean that people need to abandon all things positive and mindlessly attack players.

People are very impatient when it comes to rucks. Even the guys you mentioned as all australian have come from other clubs. I'm sure the club is aware we need to bring on a new ruckman, that's probably why you'll find our VFL side has 5 of them!

Could have added how Jolly held his own against West Coast's Cox and Naitanui, I think I have made my point though.

Jolly did not have a great game around the ground but was not the reason we lost.

The reason we lost is well summarized by Nightmare and that is purely and simply that we got thrashed in the clearances. Swan was the only player to get many and he unfortunately butchered the ball a bit. Our midfielders stats were padded out with cheap short useless possessions. Throw out the stats. Mitchell had 29 for them but slaughtered us.

They won the clearances then spread fast and hard and that's all she wrote!

I'll skip on the individual player reviews this week. Outside of Maxwell and Swan the whole team was disappointing. Maxwell was great with his rebound and was the only guy to really stand up. Swan was the only guy who won his own ball and stood out with his clearance work. Beams while his numbers and 4 goals look impressive did nothing on the inside and considering how great he has been with his clearance work all season it was disappointing that he and Pendlebury couldn't do any inside work to support Swan.

I think the comment re Beams is a bit rough. Blair or Sidebottom were equally poor at winning cont footy for mine

Days like today also make you realise how badly we miss Luke Ball.

This. We got absolutely shalacked in centre clearances early. Ball was surely missed. Blair was quiet too.

Had a big family discussion about the game yesterday with Dad, the missus (both Collingwood) and mum (Hawthorn).

Mum knows sweet FA about footy tactics but she said watching it that Hawthorn denied us first use of the footy and that we played badly because they didnt let us play on our terms.

Me and dad looked at her and didn't really have an answer, i think mum knows more than she lets on.

Problem is though mate while Jolly has held his own sometimes against quality rucks his poor games are really poor, there is too much of a difference between his best and worst and you never know which one will turn up.

You cannot play this guessing game in finals, there is too much at stake to see whether he will be good or get obliterated by sometimes second string ruckmen.

That's all. I really hope those (like myself) who devalued Gazza's game against us aren't giving Swan votes for Saturday. I thought Swan was pretty bad. Centre clearances that went nowhere, poor disposal, turnovers, missed handballs. Luckily he kicked 2 cheapies to counteract the 2 or so he cost us.

Having said that, it's hard to dominate the middle when you have forward who have no concept of leading.

Bomb and hope should be the exception, not the rule.

Wtf is every contest 4 in compared to 2 hawks every time, the hawks had extra men on the outside of the contest. Either dumb players or dumb coaching. I suspect a little of both. Just watch a hawk game and you will see less in the contest and a shit load outside the pack 2 , 3 handballs out the balls gone.
Whats with the play on at all costs, slow down, think, hit a target, continous bombing into a undersized hawks defence, yet they had more marks in the magpie forwardline.
I pray somehow we dont play hawks in september, Cause we have everyone elses measure.

I only watched the game on tv but i thought only 3 players that played to their reputation or exceeded it was Maxy, fasolo and Young.
