Ok just thought I'd like to cut the crap here and sort out all this player bagging on Big footy...

Russell, Wiggins, Bannister, Setanta O'hAlpin seem to cop a bit and there are others who think Murphy, Grigg and Bower can't kick when they are some of the better kicks in our side!

Russell
He may not look it but is one of our youngest players (and most bagged), not every one is a star straight away like Murphy. He is getting better every game and put on a lot of weight over the pre season which when a young player does that they usually lose pace & endurance as their legs need to get used to carrying the extra weigh. Another preseason in him will do him the world of good.
How long did we have to wait for Kouta to make it...

Wiggins
Can anyone actually tell me what is wrong with this guy? Seriously who can say exactly why he should be delisted? Has been getting injured all through his career, now looks like having an injury free run.
Has great hands, takes a good mark, is a straight kick and breaks up the lines at half forward, plus has great intensity and defensive pressure.

Setanta O'hAlpin
Got sick preseason and lost most of his fitness and weight, he now looks fitter and bigger, did a great job on Pavlich who is one of the best. If played as the 3rd tall defender he will do well, he is tall, strong and quick and is learning how to stay with opponents. His spoiling is improving nicely. Hardly misses a target by foot, is great at ground level and is learning to run and feed off team mates.
Come on, we all know he was going to take a while, could play until he is 35-36 like Dustin Fletcher....

Bannister
If i was a medium sized player who would be the last opponent in the Carlton side id want to have, Bannister. He has taken on the leagues best like Cornes and won. He's tough, athletic and can shut down almost anyone, he's a genuine defender.

Murphy, Grigg and Bower
They can kick, Bower tends to kick nice weighted passes instead of low bullets but most of his kicks end up in the possession of our players, Grigg is much the same but has an awkward style where his hand position on the ball is unorthodox, Murphy gets that many kicks he is bound to mess up a couple, often messes up some at then end of the game when his legs are tired, another preseason, that'll be gone. These blokes are actually great kicks and great players still building up to their best.

What, no love for Ackland?:D

Nah, I like all the players you listed. All have something to offer. :thumbsu:

Even Russell ....although when he turns the ball over it tends to stand out more to me. Probably because of the huge distances he misses his targets by. :(

JR's been hitting targets this year at a pretty efficient rate the only thing i think he needs to improve on is his set shot on goal other than that I enjoy watching him play.

I think the only issues people have with wiggins playing is the whole idea that he's not ideally the future of the club and we should be playing younger guys ahead of him.. i think that's the only critique of him anyone would have because he is skillful and a good tackler.

Big Setant's does cop a bit of flak but he has his bad games and good games so i don't know i hope his found a permanent and developing position down at FB
As for Bower, he's definately been in the top 3 of the clubs most improved players so nothing but thumbs up for him. Grigg is also starting to notch his game up after having a few games under his belt he is beginning to play with confidence.

And murphy is just murphy; a star.

Isn't Wiggo only 25... arn't players generally in their prime 24-28, also a player of his type generally play good footy into their 30's...

Great Post.
This is the line of thinking that most knowledgeable football supporters follow, and is often the reason many players stay at clubs (when the rabble in the outer are baying for blood) because the powers that be think like this, and give the players plenty of time and scope to develop in.

Some players really suffer under one coach and blossom under another. Some of those names mentioned in the above post are blossoming and although probably none of them will be spoken of as the top six in our side,(although Murphy gets talked up a lot) they will, or are, steadily becoming a strong second tier within the overall playing group.

This strong second tier of players is where real team depth comes from, as they are often difficult for opponents to man up, due to flying under the radar a bit. You never know which one or two, or three of them will bob up on game day and produce that match turning/winning burst, even if it's just in one or two quarters.

I fully agree with the above assessment of those players. Each and everyone of them is an important part of the Carlton footy side moving forward.

Once again, great post.

Jordan Russell will be something special. Good things take time and he is progressing well. His defensive pressure has improved and his game overall is improving.
For all the supporters that bagged this kid only because we are one army are you allowed back on the Russell ban wagon
Keep going Russell you are a gun!!!!!

Grigg and Bower can only kick when there is no pressure applied to them. when there is someone in there vacinity they panic and kick the ball 40 meters in the air to a contest that turns into a turnover.

They will get better at this as they play more games with that sort of pressure at AFL level, I would however like to see them turn it over trying to hit a traget properly rather than hoisting it high into the clouds. You don't learn by doing that, thats taking the safe option, if they are going to turn it over they may as well do it trying to find a proper target.

Murphy is leading the AFL in kicks this season (or top 5?), and being still young he is bound to make mistakes, he will get better and better though.

I think if you aren't already on the Bower band wagon then you need to get on, this guy has all the makings of a gun.

As for Grigg I said before that his confidence has sky rocketed this year and as for disposal efficiency he stands currently on 82% which is considerably higher than a lot of the players at the club.

Reading this I thought I had already posted...my words exactly as I have been on the BOWER Bandwagon and have just installed turbo boost!
Both Bower and Grigg have come on leaps and bounds. They will be integral to our future success. Remember their age and devlopment. They are being given big jobs and have risen to the challenge

I've noticed Bower has the ability to quickly change where his kick is going if he sees another option.. while they look to be clangers it ends up in the hands of a teammate that you didn't see (Carlton VS WCE game was the most memorable one)

I like his kicking. Awkward but does the job. His hand passing on the other hand is crude to say the least. Does not have much control of the ball in his hand or where it ends up. Diesel should be the man to have lots of one on one with these young kids. Different types of players but fundamentals are fundamentals
Practice does not make perfect but, perfect practice makes perfect.

Its oppressive when Carlton people join the opposition in bagging their own. Note operating words 'their own'.

Our players earned the right to wear the sacred CFC navy blue. And until the club decides otherwise I see them as untouchable by those who sit over the fence and have never worn the jumper.

Leave bagging to the coach. Those not up to grade, will be moved out in time. Everything in between is just as Shakespeare said << sound and fury>>.

Excuse me but I was there at Bower's birth. Have followed him through the junior ranks, played a big part in getting him to the club and am currently in the driver's seat of the Bower Bandwagon. Startled Emu. Solid Future.

Only most of the above statement is legally false. :o

I figure our criticism does not factor in the players fate. I say keep life simple - let the coach and other staff worry about that. Me I just love watching our team go out every week - the thrill of seeing them and the opportunity to win never fades. I try enjoying it by looking for the positives. Im in with CFC for life and small trifles on the way dont matter:)

I generally don't bag players all that often but if I do its out of frustration after a loss or poor performance and I need to vent those frustrations..

Having said that, anyone who thinks Ackland is up to AFL standard can come and consult me personally for individual counselling sessions.

I am confident our administration will remove non performers.

And I agree venting frustration is essential to healthy functioning, it justs a matter of how and where~
