On Sunday night, I was out for dinner with some friends, the discussion got onto football. Out of the blue, a mate said one of the players that played on the weekend was going Snowboarding during the week. My first thought was one of concern, but thought that it is his time off from the club so he can do as he pleases.

RFC_Official, what is the clubs or AFLPA's guidelines on the matter?

Can you imagine if he does his knee or another injury and is out for the rest of the year. I'm sure the club or supporters, would not be too happy.
If it was to occur, what responsibility does the player have to the club as its his day off, yet he cannot perform his job due to the misfortune.

As we all know, some players surf, ride bikes or motorbikes, skateboard and get involved in other activities that could potentially injure a player. Where do you draw the line or what is the balance between the club and personal hobbies?

I look forward to the response from RFC_Official and what the fellow Tiger folk think of it.

Snowboarding is a good activity for breaking bones isn't it?

You'd have to think it wouldn't be Rance after his previous stunts!

Honestly don't think the players should be able to do anything in season that is reasonably likely to end up interrupting their major occupation.... Not just through injury as in breaks either, snow-boarding uses different muscles in different ways from footy.... Can't they just go overseas and snow-board somewhere decent during the off-season.....

Isn't even sky diving a no go for players as well? I guess if you're spending millions of dollars on them you want them to be fully fit and healthy.

Would be very surprised if players were allowed to go snowboarding in the offseason let alone during the season.

I spent a lot of time in the hands of the same surgeon who will be fixing Gary Ablett's shoulder from a shocking snowboarding injury I had when I was living up at Hotham a few years ago. All the idle time I had not working was actually what got me onto Big Footy in the first place.

I think most high level sportspeople have clauses in their contracts that don't allow them to engage in high risk activities. I vaguely remember Leigh Matthews stopping Aker from riding his motorbike at one stage? If only we had done the same thing with Alex Rance. :p

Not sure on this....
Fair enough that you don't want them doing very high risk stuff but also, nothing worse than footballers on their day off sitting around just playing X-box whilst their brains stall.

Plenty of injuries occur just whilst doing normal stuff....

So it's in the AFLPA contract that players get a day off during the week, therefore the "we're 5-10 stfu you should be training everyday" theory doesn't really work here.

Our players have Wednesday off, but it's not all fun and games. Players study, do work experience somewhere (like Dusty does upstairs at the KGI here on Wednesdays) or some will even come in on their day off, i.e: last Wednesday morning Ivan for example was in the gym at 8am and Jack came in on his own and did goal kicking. If anything Wednesday is one of their busier days, as they're fitting everything else in on their day off as if we're playing on a Sunday, for example this week, they will be in here on Saturday training and then Sunday for the game.

RE: snowboarding, I've never heard of one of our players doing extreme sports during the season so I can't say anything about that.

Only if he had the spicy tacos

Thank goodness the voice of humour & reason...:)o_O

Also like to add that chances are players have to have scheduled days of rest from training loads/recovery. You cannot smash the body constantly and then expect it to perform at peak levels on match day. Physically bad as well as psychologically unproductive....

Thanks for the speedy reply RFC_Official. What we all would like to know, is if the player does go snowboarding in the near future, how will the club look upon the action he has taken?
As your reply indications, its not normal behaviour or its hidden from the club.
I was thinking, what about the bye week, does a player have the permission to do such activities during that time?
Once again, thanks for helping us out with the information RFC_Official.

Don't know about either of those as they've never come up, sorry.
Wow that was a quick reply RFC_Official.
Has a sense of humour, a wealth of information and responds to nut jobs on Bigfooty.
Can the Stig do no wrong? ;)

Hang on...I'll get the crucifix ready just in case. Let's nail the bastard to it.
