This is more of a thread regarding every club but seeing saints supporters are the smartest i will start it in here.

I am sick of people saying things like how was Aaron Fiora taken so high and James Hird so low.
Now what annoys me is that it is hard to tell how these players will play in the AFL. Some junior players are out of this world good and then never cut it in AFL. It is the recruiters job to pick the best players at the draft, now you would not draft a player that was ordinary at junior level because he might on the off chance be a good AFL player. (i'm talking high picks here).
I will use Daniel Kerr as an example. He was never a standout until he got to Under 18's and even then not as good as he is now (obviously). He had a super carnival for WA and got drafted at 18. If you did the draft now on current ability he would be top 5 easily. Now you look at his size when drafted and you would never take him top 5. He was even told in his first year he would not play a senior game but he played all games and look at him now.
Aaron Fiora taken at 3 because he was an outstanding junior. Mark Bolton at 4 he was an outstabding junior. Both have not kicked on in the AFL.

So all in all what im saying is people who say oh you wasted a pick on this bloke when you could of got so and so are stupid stupid people. You can never predict what a player does at AFL level. You can only draft them on how they play as a junior.

What are peoples thoughts on this? I may not of made a lot of sense but i think i am right.

What about drafting McGough? Good choice?

i think its the recruiting mangesrs choices to think which ones will step up in the afl as it is alot easier to rate which players have played the best as juniors. theyre paid to predict whod be good not who has been good.

Exactly. It is their one and only role within a footy club. If they can't spot kids who will be quality AFL players then they aren't earning their pay.

Many of the worst draft choices were hounded down by supporters who had never even seen the player in action before, but just from reading summaries and assessing what the team needs it is sometimes obvious that the selection isn't going to work out.

Personally I hate drafting delisted players and smokies from poor levels, particularly with a pick before the fourth round. Ackland and McGough were complete failures. I believe that Rix and Ferguson will join them. Phil Raymond will never play a game for us, while the likes of Gwilt and Sweeney could have been rookie listed (although end up being pretty good value for picks over 60). Howard was taken with a top 30 pick in the best draft of all time, yet no one ever rated him a chance of going in the top 70 and was no certainty to be rookie-listed.

You make some good points Saints! Of course no one is going to be 100% accurate. Life is just not that easy, and sport is no diff.

I have been guilty of saying things like fiora at three was very painful, however, thats the way it works. They are paid to decide who they think are the best juniors, and they get judged on the outcome.

saints i copy and pasted this thread onto the richmond board because i thought it was very good and applies to people on our board baggin tambling oakliegh-nichols and meyer. hope u dont mind

Howard was believed to be very likely to be selected by Western Bulldogs. The doggies had 2 picks between the Pick Howard was taken up with and our next pick.

I'd say that Beveridge didn't want to risk losing him to the doggies and he (as the St Kilda representative) was willing to pay the price.

If a club selects someone they believe to be worth drafting, they keep it quiet - especially if he is a smokey. That's why "no-one ever rated him" publicly.

They interview the draftees and they pick who they think will become the best players and who they think will fit in best with the club. Having a higher pick just means you have a better chance of picking a good player

STUPID THREAD, its crystal ball stuff. What about Andrew Thompson, Leigh Montagna, Nick Dal Santo, Matt Maguire, Sam Fisher, Aussie Jones and as far as retreads go, Keogh got us to the 97 Grand final, Brett Cook was first ruck, get a life and realise its hit and miss but Bevo has done a great job.
As far as Howard goes, JB was going to pick Jarryd Allen with that pick and ended up getting him anyway.

Oh yes, we could ALL do SUCH a better job than Beveridge, one of the most renowned scouts in modern history.

Turn it up.

Anyway, what do we know about the new scout we've taken on?

You have missed the point mate. I was never intending to bag any recruiters out there. I was just saying that people who say that this guy was a mistake being drafted high compared to this other guy who was low are a joke. You never know how different people will go in the AFL.
Some people have said its the recruiters job to know. No one no matter how many tests you do will know how anyone will go mentally and physically until they are there.

Don't worry saints, I actually was siding WITH you! ;) I was responding to the kinda people you are annoyed at as well!

Before Robert Harvey became Banger the magnificent, he was (to Darrel Baldock at least) Rodney Harvey the stringy little 16 year old!:D
