Just wanted to start a thread on how poor most of the journalism directed towards sport & of course AFL.
Some are worst than others & I won't go into the finer details. We all know who the plebs are!
I'm going to post this little tid bit by Rebecca Wilson on the Martin incident. In it she mentions how strong the cultures of Sydney, Geelong & Adelaide are & that Martin types aren't tolerated there!
Really I don't give a flying F##k what she thinks ( her comments on the A-league were just disgraceful)
It just highlights how underrated our club is by the majority of the media!
She is a Sydney sider so she probably still harbors some bitterness from the 2014 massacre. Goes on about their no dickhead policy- Buddy says hello Rebecca!
Her transcript is below.

Dustin Martin would be out if at another club

Wilson believes that Dustin Martin and his off-field behaviour would not be tolerated at another club such as Sydney that makes a point of only recruiting players who are not just professional on game day.

“Well it’s made a little bit of news (in Sydney), certainly nothing like in Melbourne,” she said.

“I saw a few Sydney players at the Ed Sheeren concert last night and they shook their heads because the Swans like a lot of clubs have got a no dickheads policy.

“This guy has given himself and the game an uppercut so many times that no one can believe he’s still there.

“If you found him in the culture of a Geelong, Sydney or Adelaide he wouldn’t still be there.”

So biased and has little credibility.

Just writing with an inflammatory intent designed to suck people in.

p.s. Dusty still behaved like a dickhead....and her 3 "shining example clubs "mentioned...have harboured d.hs along the way as well.

Perhaps its just me but I think a number of channel 7 commentators harbour anti-hawthorn sentiments. Carey, Harley, Ling, Mathews, Richardson all seem to have an underlying dislike for the hawks, which is fine. Just don't let it effect your commentating and comment on the merits of the player or team not your own bitterness.

Is Rebecca Wilson still a thing? One of the best things about not living up north and my waning interest in NRL is not having to hear what that flog has to say about anything. Say what you will about Caro, but at least she's a reasonable journalist. Rebecca is pretty much wrong every time her fingers hit they keyboard. Good to see her teeing off on the AFL when Blake Ferguson is running around playing league again.

I think Lingy and Richo are the most objective when talking about HFC. The others you mentioned seem to let their bias bubble to the surface at times.

Agree on commentators being more professional with their comments/statements. Some carry on like what they say is gospel. They are just another person with a view/opinion really.

Carey says stupid things but I don't think he's necessarily against us. From memory he tipped us to beat Sydney when most others didn't. Ling is so genuinely unbiased against us the Cats big footy collective have disowned him. And Richo has obviously had a frontal lobotomy so is incapable of being anti-anything except being anti-exciting and anti-insightful. And Lethal isn't anti-Hawthorn he's just covering his bias by being more critical than others.

No sadly, matthews isn't covering his bias. He isn't actually covering anything. He is devoid of emotional attachment to anything. He doesn't barrack, or cheer and never did. Footy is a job, that he was good at. I heard an interview with him a few years back where he was asked "which team do you have a soft spot for out of Hawks, Pies and Lions" He said "I don't have soft spots, I feel an attachment to the Lions because I am still professionally attached to them. I have no alliegance to any team or anything really. I just don't get emtionally involved."

It's almost a condition with him. When you see him putting down hawthorn or he thinks a fifty fifty decision went out way and shouldn't have, he means it.

Lethal doesn't have soft spots. He has hard spots and slightly harder spots.

Most fans put down Hawthorn if they think we're not playing well. I'm also not so blind to say sometimes calls favour us (that's football, happens every game).

Yes, he works for the Lions - he can't come right out and barrack for us as a result. That's like asking Rodney Eade to say he's a Hawthorn person. I'm sure deep down he is - but he's employed to ensure another club's success.

While employed for 7 Lethal had to call the games in an unbiased manner. There's nothing worse than partisan commentary. If he is down on an element of how we're playing then he obviously means it. You can also have a tendency to be more critical of things you have a passion for. I could care less if another team plays badly - but if the Hawks are playing badly I get bloody angry about it.

And while this is club marketing - I'm sure Leigh wouldn't have agreed to do this and say the things he said if he didn't mean them.

I agree.

I think Leigh Matthews barracks for Leigh Matthews....end of story.

Well, poor behavior didn't hinder O'Loughlin's career at the swans. How about what nick Davis used and still gets up to? Glass houses and all. This all coming from a husband cheater and a drunk driver! Utter and Gutter journalism at its highest peak in Australia at the moment! I mean, this b***h and John laws think soccer fans are terrorists!!! I know a few of these fans and I can guarantee everyone that they have nothing to do with the KKK!

Mmmmmmm I will have to bed to differ with you on Ling, from my point of view he is pro hawthorn because he loves excellence which we have plenty of. If you listen to him he very very rarely says anything negative about Hawthorn and when we are or a player is playing poorly he is saying that will snap out of it.

I don't understand what the point of the OP is. What is it that has prompted a thread on poor journalism? Is it simply that the journo failed to include the Hawks as a club with a strong culture? Are we that insecure?

I find it's a common theme amongst football supporters to become easily offended by the slightest perceived bias in the media. Dare to mention (or not mention) your team and its an offence worthy of being hung, drawn and quartered.

At the end of the day, who gives a shit?

No, it's not the Hawks he's concerned about: it's because the Swans are held up as the epitome of class and footy culture, when they're obviously not.

And for those bagging Leigh Matthews, listen to his commentary on any Hawthorn match over the years - there' s a note in his voice that he can't disguise. He may say outwardly that he has no love for any club, but he can't hide the way he really feels about us.
