Port Adelaide have come out and stated that although he is a great player, Leon does not fit in our future plans!

Where to now for the man we call maj???

Back to the WAFL to play with either his original club, the Perth Demons or Peel Thunder.
Seems to have shot himself in the foot if it was more money he was chasing.
If it was the Go Home factor,he has got his wish.

I'm starting to think it was about money all along

I'm pretty sure it was the go home factor otherwise he wouldn't have limited himself to Perth and Adelaide teams, and he wouldn't have been talking to WAFL teams either. I am a little surprised but that was always the risk.

I read he signed with Swan Districts if he did not get on a AFL List

The Port Adelaide Football Club confirms that it will not be selecting Leon Davis in next week’s pre-season or rookie drafts.

Port Adelaide general manager of football, Peter Rohde, said the club had explored the opportunity of picking up the 30-year-old, but after considering all factors had decided against this path.

“We’ve had a lot of discussion about Leon as we have worked through all the options,” Rohde said.

“Leon has been a great footballer, but on balance we have decided that he’s not the best fit for the direction we are taking as a football club.

“With our decision now made and speculation arising from Leon’s confirmed nomination for the pre-season draft, it’s the right time to declare our intention not to go with him.

“Leon wants to continue playing football at some level, and we wish him every success.”

Here the article from port themselves.
Port Adelaide currently holds pick no. 3 in the Pre-Season Draft which will be held next Tuesday 13 December.

Port Adelaide's loss. They won't make the finals anyway, so no need to worry about Leon choking in the finals.

Jokes aside Fremantle/West Coast and even I'd argue Adelaide are making a mistake not drafting Davis. Can play forward, back, midfield. And to a high level. Has another two years left in him and is still producing to a high level.
He can absolutely make any of these teams better and even if Adelaide for example say "we aren't going to win a premiership over the next two years" it doesn't matter, as a team you play to win now. No playing group sits down and says "we are playing to finish 10th or 11th" they all want to make the top 8. Regardless of who they are. Clubs have come from nowhere to win premierships or to climb the ladder and this year is as good as any.
For clubs like Fremantle and West Coast it is even more surprising that they overlook Davis. Just came off an AA season. Forget age. Look at his numbers, look at his games.

I'm with moneyball theory. Fremantle, West Coast and Adelaide should be looking to invest in Davis. St Kilda, Fremantle, Sydney and Melbourne should be looking at Fevola.

I'd have Waylen Manson in the same category. Hasn't played at the elite level yet, but his numbers are just off the charts good for someone of his age and type. For the clubs with the resources to support him: Collingwood, Carlton, Hawthorn, Sydney, Adelaide, Essendon and maybe Geelong along with West Coast and Fremantle, any of these clubs could do worse than give the kid a shot.

Interesting to see if Leon would walk back to us with his tail between his legs and ask for a rookie place.

I seriously doubt it, but it's all he's left with, a rookie placement at minimum wage, no one is going to take him in the PSD, all he is left with is the Fevola "beg and hope" option, which has about a 1% chance of occurring.

Sad to see his career end this way if it does, but it will be through no one's fault but the man himself.

Davis now looks certain to have ended his AFL career and learnt yesterday that one of his preferred WAFL homes, Swan Districts, would not take him because of the cost to that club's salary cap points.

Part of the attraction of Swan Districts was a development job with BHP, that is gone. Looks like Pickering has really killed Leon's career.

Maybe he should have picked up the phone when the club tried to call him.

Leon and his management have totally balls this one up,if I was Pendles I would actively be looking for new management now.$250.000 a season does not seem like bad money when you are coming towards the end of your career.

This is terrible outcome for Leon but they rolled the dice and they cannot complain, sad that he cannot even play for Swan districts you don,t know who got it more wrong Leon or Pickering but if I was Pendles I would take note.

Bad luck Leon

You got a good offer from a club who has always stuck by you pretty much gifted you your first 75 games and in return you do not even try to work something out with the club

Yeah he had a great year but look at last year we could have easily delisted him instead we stuck by him he wants a premiership do right by the club like it has always done for you and your family

I am very happy that he will now finish his career in the WAFL

Have to agree, Freo & West Coast are mad not to have picked him up if they consider themselves serious top 4 contenders and flag hopefuls - maybe salary cap issues. Pick ups like this can be the difference at the end of the year when it gets close. His ball use is brilliant and a premium should be placed on that in todays football.

As for Adelaide & Port who are on the rebuild I can understand that a 30 year old does not fit in their plans, he will not get them any closer to a flag, which is what its all about.

Knightmare nailed it with his post.

It's astonishing how supporters actually fall for the crap like "not in our next premiership" line when the fact of the matter is, you still have to play for the now.

Supporters and players want to win games of football- period.

It's mind blowing that Gavin Urquhart is going to be chosen instead of Davis in the PSD and it is purely because Port won't have to take on any of his contract because North are committed to paying it.

2 All-Australian jumpers in the last 3 years in different roles and playing as good as he has ever been, yet nobody wants to take him.

So sad.

The whole situation is sad - what a waste!

I don't think its that mind blowing that Port are choosing a guy who is essentially costing them nothing. Thats the finanicial reality. If you haven't got the cash you can't have the player.

What is strange is Port turned down a sponsors offer to pump $1mil in cash to get a Davis or Fev, because "they can't be bought". They are quite happy instead to compromise the clubs onfield success instead. I think its mind blowing that a club that has no money would turn down money in exchange for a good player and a lot of bums on seats. Where is the downside?

Other clubs sacrifice home games for cash, Port need to toughen up & take oppurtunities or they will wither and die.

There is something seriously wrong with the system if Leon Davis can't get a club, even within the geographical restrictions he has applied. The list numbers and salary cap have forced clubs to pass on really good or potentially good players not because they don't want them, but because of artificial ceilings imposed by the AFL. Fremantle's selection problems at the end of the season clearly show that playing lists are not long enough. To have a club in the senior competition unable to make up numbers in a roster match is a disgrace. It is not the club's fault.
The AFL needs to allow bigger lists so that players like Leon can be on one without the ridiculous counting exercises that clubs have to undertake in deciding their year's group. The seconds battler who gets a surprise opportunity and produces a senior career from nowhere has vanished not because there are no longer players who could do it, but because the rules won't allow it.
