Autopsy Positives and Negatives vs Richmond

After the first half I called for trew to be delisted. But he played well in the third quarter. However 17 CBA for 1 centre clearance for a guy who's only role in the side is as that player after 2 years on the list is probably not good enough. He has the size and that's his speciality.

He would need to put in a couple more games as good or better than this to get a contract extension.

You do realise that it was only 20-16 right? Pretty close tally.

You do also realise that we are about -40 free kicks compared to the next worst team in the negative, right? In that we get fecking reamed every single week? Do you watch footy?

We’re obviously all biased but try to go back and watch it; watch how many times we got you holding the ball and it was called play on, watch how many times Riewoldt and Lynch get held down and get no free kick, watch how Riewoldt gets his head ripped off for no free then 20 seconds later Waterman gets it for the same thing.

Umpires on the whole had nothing to do with the result today, your midfield torched our empty midfield for the most part (Dusty injured, no Prestia or Cotchin) but we were the better side overall.

In a 3 point game like last week where we lose the frees 26-13, maybe you can call out the umpiring a bit then, but not today.
Surely you are not complaining about Riewoldt not getting kicks. He has made staging an art form. In the instance you mentioned he even laughed himself as the ump saw through his antics. He did draw a free against young Bazzo by diving but mostly his staging is just so obvious that he doesn’t get it. You were certainly much more efficient and had great run but the frees for you and non frees for us were remarkable…particularly whenever Nichols was involved. By the way, for most of the game you had more than double the frees but some lates frees to us evened it up more in the end

You do know he played about 60 something percent. There was one poor handball and a fumble early but other than that he did ok. Inreality he was still finding his feet in the WAFL after a long absence so I was surprised with his selection but he certainly needs to keep improving

The players aren't on the ground. It's the same as if the quarter is already finished, you can't pay a free kick. He literally made up a rule on the spot.
Runners aren't players on field either yet can give away frees so the claim that you have to be a player on field to be penalised is wrong.

At any rate I see it as a strange one to be annoyed about - the AFL has rightly decided to be more protective of umpires. You can't get a pass for being on the bench.

Now being upset with the inconsistency is much more understandable, but you can't really complain about being punished for a rule you actually broke just because you usually get away with it.

The worst free call of the night was the 50m penalty against Ryan in the first quarter .

Daniel rioli ran Ryan into the protected zone . Rewaldt went sideways of his mark not 1 not 2 but three separate steps around and the ump refused to call play on .

What was Ryan supposed to do ?

He wasn't originally in the protected zone until Jack went 6 feet to his right .

The ump should have called play on after the first step off his line like they did to us all night .
Tigers are clearly coached to run players near the protected zone. Seems like they're just banking on the umpire inevitably calling it incorrectly at some point in the game

2 All Australians. 1 Club Champion 1 R/Up Club Champion and 2 3rd place Club Champion.

Happy to call him JUST a very good player

Absolutely… his club championship placings match his 2 all australian years and the rest based on his durability and games played.. can he influence a game? No, is he a game changer? No, Is he goal kicker? No Awesome disposal? No.. Two fantastic years in 12 seasons doesn’t scream champion .

The 50 for dissent rule if adjudicated consistently is fine. The obvious holding the man against Cripps should've been paid, then the umpire pays against our bench - okay. Almost identical happens later with a Richmond player and Riewoldt gets up, yells at the umpire and points at the contest where the free was missed - no free for dissent.

The idea of the rule is to encourage respect towards the umpires, yet spectators would have no idea about what's being yelled from the bench (the free itself had to be explained by the boundary rider), whereas as we see Riewoldt visibly remonstrating with the umpire but that's okay.

Just make up your minds for ****s sake. It is truly the most poorly adjudicated sport on the planet and it makes people want to turn it off.

I thought Ryan did the smart thing TBH .

Daniel rioli ran Ryan into the protected zone .

Rewaldt had moved well off his mark Ryan was in the right place at the right time to tackle .

Ump should have called play on after 1 step not let him take 3 then call a 50m penalty

Players know the rule and are attuned to what is now play on .

It was clearly play on and umps non call ****ed it

Its not Ryan's fault Dan Rioli ran him into the zone

Negatives
Duggan, Gaff, Williams- send them to ressies
Rotham was poor
Ryan was poor both with his inaccuracy, squibbing marking attempts and playing for frees. Cut that shit out
Willie faded out
West is wasted where he played
Redden needs a rest. Give someone else a go for a CBA.
Yeo injury . Fluck off

Neutral
Bazzo pretty good but out of his league. He needs to stay in but really needs Gov back to help
Waterman was ok. Made some stupid decisions and is generally too slow making those decisions
Petch was good in patches but faded out too much

Positives
Darling tried his guts out. Would have kicked 10 if he has some if the umpiring leniency that the tigers had inside fwd 50
Kelly Nic and Cripps amazing
Hough is a bloody ripper
Trew played well on debut. One of our best mid field debut for years?
Shuey hurn good
TB immense
SPS was a live wire once he came on. Came out breathing fire. Death incarnate mode on Wolfenstein 3D.
JJ was great. Took tackles on provided run and dash. Loving what he has been bringing. Had a few defensive misses inside def50 but expected while he is still learning this role

I think that’s everyone.

Fun game of footy
We really should have made more if getting 50/50 umpiring decisions when we were good.
I doubt we will ever win that stat again. Seems to be a clear AFL decision to not give us 50/50’s

Dumb not to be close to Daniel - he wa over 5m away and tracking a different line.

Fair to say we needed the Kelly trade an Cripps should not be so critisised by some.

Another game to highlights all the factors going on within this transitioning team.
We've seen definite improvement with returning A-grade players, individual efforts, player positioning and game plan. But we've also seen the limits of many players or list-cloggers as we try to overlay this team onto a new or different game style.

At the same time, some senior players are nearing their use-by date or breaking down.
We haven't really been able to replace the skills of Shep or Jetta and we haven't got a replacement for Hurn.
We can't replace NN or JK, although we do have the next best thing (maybe) in Oscar.
Cole being touted as some backline saviour yet like Cripps gets heavily dished on here. He does have his assets but is no A-grade player.

Last week we were very accurate which kept us in the game, today from 15 points at least 5 we're gettable goals on any other day. So it could've been much closer, certainly if JK was in.
What's up with Ryan, has had a bad run of form, looks disinterested or not as switched on, missing set shots.
While there's improvement with little wins and little steps forward, much of this team won't be around soon - we have an abundance of average players - there's a lot to take apart and reshape for 2023 and 2024, depending on who else we pick up between now and then.

Also, loved seeing Chris Masten on the sidelines for us. Only a small positive but just having him there full of energy it seemed the boys got a small boost out of it too.

Don't think anyone rates Cole as elite, but we are lacking a proper lock-down small defender and he's the closest/best we currently have on the list.

Yes, it was a very poor, biased performance. Paying that free kick led directly to a goal (even if it’s a rule it’s never paid, and Richmond players were abusing them all day), as did the free against Nic standing up for himself against Soldo. Then there was the Ryan 50 m penalty, and a number of other soft free kicks near to their goal.

Biggest takeaway from this for me is Trew attending 17 CBAs, the third most out of all our mids.

It kind of reminds me of that scene from the lord of the rings movie where after much deliberation and procrastination Treebeard states the painfully obvious

"After much deliberation, Simpson and the rest of the coaching staff have concluded that Andrew Gaff is definitely not an inside midfielder!"

"Errrr, great!"
