Soooooo....
I flew down for the game, really enjoyed the first quarter, and found myself sitting there at quarter time thinking "How great is it going to be to see Roger Dodger's 100th AND get to see them win live!??!!". Only to see the game turn around, and a close one slip through our fingers.... AGAIN.
I really have struggled to get myself back up to the point where I could see much positive.
So, sorry if this week is a bit lame (even more lame than usual??), but I really thought I was going to see a win live after 11 seasons...
It was positive:
1. Seeing all the young kids hang in there, keep fighting, and get within 3 kicks despite being savaged by the umpires;
2. Seeing all the Freo faithful turn out for the game - well done everybody who went, we put some of the Melbourne clubs to shame with that kind of turnout;
3. Watching Suban, DeBoer and Ibbo have great games - they are so exciting to think of as the future;
4. Seeing Dessie back after such a long while out - let's hope he is able to stay injury free and keep improving form wise;
5. Seeing Roger Dodger get to 100 games, and bring up such a milestone in the indigenous round - not so long ago I can remember the broken leg that he had looking like it was going to end his career before it had really started;
6. Knowing that we were able to stay so close and fight hard even with Mayne, Palmer, and Crowley out injured, and some good young kids in the wings (Pratt, Broughton, Walters, Pearce, Ruffles, Sibbo, Hally and most of all Clarke);
7. Bumping into a couple of players from the Imalu Tigers walking down Bourke Street before the game - they were off to the G to suit up for the Richmond -v- Essendon game, where they were going to play the Eels (from Victoria I think) in the curtain raiser game. Don't know what the score was or who won, but these two blokes were full of promise and energy. It was the first time they'd been to Melbourne, and they were over the moon at getting to play on the 'G. Well done boys - what a great round it is...
8. Knowing that's one game closer to the end of McBurney's career. What a goose.
9. Realising that I can scream loud enough, and long enough, to lose my voice in less than 15 minutes...
10. Keeping my run of not winning intact for another year - means when I do finally see us win live over here it'll be all the sweeter...
But, most positive of all, as I sat on the last flight out of Melbourne stewing in my rage at the umps, and despair at the loss, was how great it was to have the seats next to me suddenly occupied by a young couple and their gorgeous four week old boy. Kids are soooooooo cute at that age - made me forget all about the match result, and smile all the way back to Canberra while babbling inane baby talk at the little fella...
