Positives?

Maybe it was better to start with an analysis of the game (I saw it on TV and glad I didn't go) but i'm trying to get out of it what we could after a 59point thrashing.

Hard to find many positives
Basset at FB, under constant pressure and not to blame. Looked like he can handle the position all year.
Skipper some nice touches at CHB. Still too slight but can be developed
Wiggins a couple of goals when the ball hardlty came that way.
Alvey good first half.
Eagleton keep trying and not the worst.
A hot day and we can play better.
Help me with more please

I didn't watch, I just followed the scores on the internet and occasionally listened on the radio (but the reception was pretty shocking). What happened to Grant?

Anyway, Darcy apparently had a below par day, which is probably at least partly due to his injury, and we were missing Croft and Kritter, so don't expect a weakness there come round 1. I heard Bandy racked up possessions well, so hopefully he can be left as a tall in the forward line, which is apparently what we really lacked. Although you wouldn't know it from the radio call. It was so one-sided that they didn't even mention Grant was injured when discussing injuries from the game.

From what I heard Robbins was impressive and should be able to hold down his back pocket position for the year. I also hear Birss did pretty well, and I suspect he will come along nicely this year.

It was only a pre-season game, and while it's always disappointing to get flogged, I can't wait to stick it back up Geelong in round one.

Agree that Bassett looked OK given the circumstances, and Gilbee looks better than last year.

I thought that Bandy actually looked better in the ruck than Darcy.

I know its the first pre-season game, but poor decision making and disposal are a worry, as are getting killed at the centre bounce clearances and our lack of height and muscle.

It could be a long season....

True but had some porr disposal which put us under pressure.

Yes but first check his man in defence. Ablett? a couple of easy throw in goals. Not a backman and not his fault he is played there.

True because put he is one of few younger players to put his body on the line

There were a few little glimpses of good play to come.

The players, especially robbo, murph and hahn were pretty fearless in the packs etc.

Eagleton seems to be trying really hard..which is pretty good. (although i still think he has a bit more work ahead of him)

Most of the time it didn't seem like they were really trying. (which may be a good thing. if they were trying their hardest and played like that i'd be worried!)

What happened to Darce towards the end?
What happened to Grant?

Hopefully it was just the fact that they got behind and was too hard to catch up in the heat.

Chops,

Geelong is a very good offensive team and they can hurt you when your skill level lets you down and I think thats what happend to today. Our skill level overall was poor and it was not due the Cats puting too much pressure on us, it was mainly due to our own errors.
Positives:
I thought our midfield was more accountable which is one of the aims this season.
Bassett and Harris will add depth to our tall defensive options.
Wiggins has improved and should be given several matches in the seniors to prove his worth rather than have him in and out of the team. Perhaps a spell on the ball is also in order.
Skipper is also a decent longer term option.
Our senior group is still showing no signs of slowing down
Struggling:
The use of Hargrave and Bowden puzzled me.
Murphy too deep in defence. Birss was the best option for Riccardi.
Marking power across half forward almost non existent.
Whats next:
Time to have a look at McGuinness, Picken, Bruton, Faulkner and Cross over the next few weeks.

Agree on Murphy.He probably beat Ricco but really its taking away a prime weapon by playing him so deep.Thought Browny should have gone onto the ball at about half way through the second quarter.Hargrave was wasted badly I thought.

The main positive i think is no serious injuries!

I think Wiggins getting a full game (well i didn't notice if he was on the bench) and he did some good things. Skipper and Bowden getting some ground time also was good. Bassett was another one...i don't really see any other positives.

Agreed.

The other positive is that there is plenty of time until Round 1 and that I'm sure the coaches picked up on a few weaknesses today that they will work on in that time.

I thought Hahn did OK today.

Robbo showed some dash.

Murph was good.

Grant was good.

In fact I think the whole backline was good enough defensively, given the way geelong was delivering the ball into the forward line, which was pretty well, and often.

Basset would have to improve as he gets more games under his belt. He may be 25 but he is still fairly inexperienced for someone his age (playing at top level)

Brown made the most of limited opportunities.

Bandy did OK.

West did OK.

I wouldn't be to worried, its only the firts hit out in a glorified practice match. We have never really set the world alight in fosters /ansett / wizard cups. I personally am not reading much into it and assuming (hoping) it was just an off day

One positive is that Geelong came out and played a 4qtr blinder. If they had come out and played sloppy, non-committed football, we might have scraped through with a win, and started fooling ourselves as to where we are at.

At least with this outcome, Rhode will be very well aware of what we need to work on.

Another one is now we have a few matches with the normal rules of the game and no the stupid wiz cup ones. So that will be better.
