Possible Future Draftee Watch

🥰 Love BigFooty? Join now for free.

Have been thinking of this thread for a while, and just thought I'd kick it off tonight after what I've witnessed in a NEAFL final today.

Essentially, this is the spot for any potential draftees. Obviously there's a draft thread for this season alone, meaning this is more for kids that aren't eligible this year, or academy kids, or even players who have gone well in state leagues that might be given a shot.

It seems a bit of a trend to find out all about possible draftees at the start of their draft year, but I'm interested in going even earlier than that, and seeing which ones we should keep an eye on for further down the track.

Also, I love a 'watch' thread.

To kick it off, I have to mention Luke Rogerson who currently plays for Redlands and (I believe) is an academy kid. Just saw him kick three goals and play brilliantly in a NEAFL final against the Suns, and he was very impressive. Obviously not draftable until next year, but he showed some promising signs in the 2's match he played earlier in the year (coincidentally also against the Suns), and impressed me greatly today. Can win his own ball often and uses it brilliantly. His kicking seems to be a real asset and he's very composed under pressure.

'Watch' threads are all well and good, PK, but you obviously meant to call it "Operation: Keep an eye out for future potential draftees that won't be drafted this year but may be in future years and post them here", and mis-typed. I understand. I have an issue with typos, too.

Assuming our ladder position doesn't change, what picks will we receive?

Picks 8, 23, 30, 49 and 67,

That's more for this year's draft thread probably. But feel free to post it here.

Speaking of future drafts, we don't have any more compensation picks after this year do we?

While everyone seems to love Operation threads, I'm more the Watch thread type myself, even if it's popularity has well and truly decreased of late. It's kind of like being the one person who still watches Channel Ten.

I stand corrected, but picks can still change if players are taken by GWS and free agency and the clubs affected activate their compo picks for this draft.

Wasn't going to sign up until the off season (when I've got a bit more time on my hands), but saw this thread and needed to contribute.

Rogerson is a star. I live near the Redlands home ground so get down occasionally and he's caught my eye more than once. I wasn't sure how he'd go with the step up to NEAFL, but he's handled it brilliantly which gives me much more confidence in him as a footballer.

In my experience, you know you've got someone special when they are outplaying men twice their size and with 100+ NEAFL games to their name (or, as was the case today, AFL listed players with the Suns) in the year before they're even old enough for the draft.

Perhaps I'm biased having seen a bit of him, but I think he could go as early as the second round next year. Would take him with a pick in the 20's in a heartbeat. Just gets footy and has sublime disposal. A few guys today were saying he is in the Lions academy (does that mean he's already on our list basically), so to any other interested clubs - hands off!!!!!!

Perfect post for this thread, TheTelemarketer, thanks so much for your input. Not too bad at all for a first post as well. Welcome aboard :thumbsu:

Sounds like an exciting prospect. What type of player is he? Tall? Key position? Mid? From your description of his disposal he sounds like a mid or flanker.

Cheers for the welcome :)

He plays predominately in the midfield, but also rotates forward. Definitely needs to put on a bit of muscle, but that's not so hard to do. He just oozes class whenever he gets near it though, and has a great defensive game too which I've found often the classy players lack. I don't think I saw a single errant disposal from him today. Each time he got it he used it superbly. Hasn't been a kid this exciting to come through Redlands for a while now, apart from perhaps Sam Michael who is now at the Lions as a rookie.

It'll be interesting to see how he goes in the U18 carnival next year. That'll be the big test for him. On current form, he'd be unlucky not to be picked up next year. Does anyone else know much about him?

Welcome to the board!

Yehh as mentioned, Rogerson really impressed me in the reserves game against the Suns. Didn't get much of it and was definitely out-sized, but he had a few pinpoint passes that were as good as I've seen. Also seemed to be a great reader of play, and had one passage where he received it, spun out of a tackle, dished it off, laid a shepherd, got it back, dodged two players and kicked it straight onto Karnezis' chest which was brilliant. Seems like you've seen a fair bit of him though, TheTelemarketer. Has he been highly touted for a while now?

I'm not sure to be honest, as I'm just a casual observer. I normally get along to whoever's playing at Redlands when I've got little on on the weekend, but haven't seen him before now. I noticed him in an under 18's game early in the year for the first time and he just seemed an absolute class above from the start. Judging by how the coaches who were nearby were talking, they felt the same.

That does sound exactly like a Rogerson bit of play. What surprised me today was how much of the ball he got. He really did influence the contest, whereas in a few other NEAFL games I've seen my biggest criticism of him has probably been that he goes missing in patches. Not the case in the 18's though, so probably just a problem with stepping up to the next grade. Not at all a problem today though. He was comfortable in Redlands 5 best players in a comprehensive victory.

This is my rough understanding of how things currently lie as far as academy kids draftable in '13/'14 go, ordered very roughly by, well, how much their names have popped up (yep...scientific)...:

Potential 2013 draftees:

Tickner - sole AIS rep this year, QLD U16 and U18 rep, 193cm 89kg medium fwd

Qld U18 reps:
Conway - also U16 MVP, on-baller
Rutledge - back pocket/flanker
Gribble

Ressies Top-ups:
Gambale
Stiller
Rogerson
Pendlebury
Southern - winger

Potential 2014 draftees:

AIS reps:

Hammelmann - 194cm, 79kg tall fwd
Dawson - medium fwd/back, 187cm, 83kg

Any names I've missed? Anyone care to fill in some blanks?

Western Maggies. Been playing as a nippy small forward for the Lions twos for a good part of the last two seasons. He'd still only be 17, I think. Pretty safe pair of hands and a neat overall game. Height might go against him.

Could someone please summarise what the go is with Tickner? What's involved for us to secure him?

It's the same as father/son. Ignoring an attempt to rookie him, which would be stupid as it's unlikely to work, the procedure is:
  1. We nominate Tickner in the pre-trade week meeting.
  2. Other clubs have the chance to bid the pick that they would take him with. The highest pick at the end of this step "wins".
  3. We have the choice of taking Tickner with our next pick after the highest pick from Step 2, or we can pass on him and he'll be locked in to the club for the pick from Step 2.
That's basically it. Relevant notes:
  • This is all before trade week, so we can no longer trade or other change the draft pick we committed to using for Tickner. That is 100% locked in. The same applies if we pass on him and let someone else take him - their pick is locked in then.
  • We use our next pick after the highest pick bid. If we're still in the bottom six and someone in the top 8 bids a second rounder for Tickner, we only have to use our third rounder to match them as that's our first pick after their bid.

The other interesting thing to note that I didn't mention - multiple academy kids in the same draft can work out really well for us.

Say we've got Conway, Tickner and Gribble that are all rated around the second round. Assuming the ladder is the same as this year if, say, Melbourne bids their second rounder on Conway, Bulldogs bid their second rounder on Tickner and the Swans bid their second rounder on Gribble and we chose to match all bids, we'd get to use our second, third and fourth round picks on these kids, even if they were all rated in the second round. This is when we get a steal, similar to the Bulldogs with Wallis and Liberatore both being first round talent father/sons - they got one for a first rounder and one for a second rounder.
