Probably at this stage Johncock or Reilly !
Who you gonna put on Hentschell, Walker and Tippett with confidence after the weekend !

Probably any of Heath Shaw, Harry O'Brien, Nick Maxwell, Nathan Brown, Presti, Marty Clarke...

I've not followed the changing Crows lineup over the past couple of years. Who do they have? Who's their number one ruckman? Their elite onballers? Small and tall forwards? Small and tall backmen?

I know they have the Porpoise and Burton.. oh and Rutten. Have McLeod or Edwards retired yet? They must be pushing it, surely.

Not particularly worried about any of those, although after saying that, Walker or someone will probably kick 7 and I'll have egg on my face.:p

Feel free to redirect me but I clearly heard Nathan Buckley state in the NAP GF commentary that Josh Fraser was looking at rd 3 to start his season.

I may have misunderstood, but I am fairly certain. If anyone can clarify that it would be appreciated.

I guess I have to say good luck as I am in opposition territory!

Are you serious?

At the moment Maric is our number one ruck and expect either Tippett to rotate with him or for Griffin to come in to be his back up.

Look out for Vince, Knights, Thompson, Douglas, Mackay, Reilly and possibly van Berlo, if he over comes his injury in time, in the midfield. To a lesser extent we've got Otten and Cook who look like a chance for Round 1.

For once our forward line is looking like it could be somewhat of a threat to our opposition. Hentschel will make his return to AFL in Round 1, then there's Walker on debut and Tippett will be down there. At the moment, Jacky is developing as our small forward, but Edwards is also having a run down there.

In the backline there's the usual Bock, Stevens, Goodwin, McLeod, Johncock and hopefully Rutten if he's fit to play.

Porplyzia is also a chance to play, if he can get some match fitness beforehand. You can forget about Burton, he's out with a knee, remember, last year against your side, MCG.... am I ringing any bells?

I'd be thinking along the lines of this for Round 1:

B: Maxwell - Presti - O'Brien
HB: Cox - N Brown - Shaw
C: Thomas - O'Bree - Beams
HF: Didak - Cloke - Reid
F: Lockyer - Anthony - Medhurst
Foll: Fraser - Pendlebury - Davis
Inter: Swan - Bryan - Sidebottom - Toovey

I'll bet any money I missed someone!

B: Maxwell, Presti, O'Brien
HB: Clarke, Reid, H.Shaw
C: Pendlebury, Swan, Davis
HF: Didak, Cloke, Goldsack
FF: Medhurst, Anthony, Lockyer

Followers: Fraser, Beams, Thomas
INT: Wood, Cox, Obree, Stanley

EMG: Sidebottom, McCarthy, N.Brown

Nate Brown to be rested because of their inexperienced talls. The others should be able to do the job. Beams and Stanley to start the year, get some youthful hunger and AFL ready bodies around the stoppages. Goldsack across half-forward is an interesting one, he can swing back if we need him, but his pressure is superb, and he'll be very effective at locking the ball forward.

Dawes simply isn't ready to replace Rocca, Rusling isn't fit, so Anthony must play FF. We need to let him lead from the square, with Medhurst and Lockyer roving around him. Cloke to push up the ground like his 2007 role, with Didak staying forward of centre. Davis and Thomas can spend time there if we need a spark, but mostly I'd like to see them rotating through the midfield, and Thomas at times down back.

Our backline can provide loads of rebound, with O'Brien, Clarke, Heath, Thomas and Cox all going through, and even Reid and Maxwell. We need to persist with getting the running game to work, because our kicking down the lines gets exposed against the Cats and Hawks (when we beat Geelong, we moved the ball through the middle far more!). Run the lines, use the handball but not excessively. And most of all, get the ball in the hands of Scotty Pendlebury, Leon Davis, Alan Didak, Marty Clarke and Heath Shaw. We need to give our forwards a sniff, and this can't be done with O'Bree, Johnson, Swan etc. predominately going inside 50. If one of those guys is running past, GIVE THEM THE PILL!

Marty Clarke. I knew I missed someone. He can slot onto the wing with Beams on the bench and Sidebottom to start the year in the Magoos.

hf: Didak cloke davis
f: Medhurst rocca anthony

Cheers CG, now that you mention it you're ringing a lot of bells. I suppose in the off-season I've dropped off in my knowledge of other clubs (which will certainly pick up once I can spend my weekends watching, listening to and reading about real footy again).

Out of interest; how do you rate Adelaide currently? We seem to have a good record against you in recent times, but what about against other clubs? Where would you be happy with them finishing the year? The Crows are one of those teams that are out of sight, out of mind for me.

I hardly expect you to be an expert on our team or know of our lesser players, but Burton who did his knee against you guys, thats pushing it :p

I'm not so sure where we sit at the moment, we haven't really had an accurate gauging of this due to who we've played in the pre season. Ok, we got shown up pretty well by Geelong, but since then I feel that our game has improved, we're making less skill errors and the younger guys are starting to settle in.

Coming up against Collingwood, Round 1, MCG, thats a tough ask! I'm not confident of a win, but I think we will surprise a few people. Its finally starting to feel like we've moved on as a Club and are really starting a fresh this year, especially now with Hentschel back and Taylor Walker lining up in the forward line.

Last year I was kind of frustrated that we finished in the top 8, just cos I knew we weren't going to get anywhere and I was sick of losing in the finals (sounds pretty pathetic huh!) But now, with a new look side, I hope we can sneak in. We're no Hawthorn, or Geelong and probably aren't as good as you guys or Carlton, but we're getting there and its nice to finally be able to see the light so to speak haha.

Ok end rant!

How's Hentschel's form been during the pre-season CG?

Did he play a couple of SANFL games at the end of last year? I thought he might of but I would not have thought he would have been playing Round 1. Coming off an injury like that I would have thought a few more SANFL games would be warranted to get some match fitness into him.

Walker looks like a beauty though. Really looking forward to seeing him in a couple of weeks.

I like this team, but I don't understand why you'd omit Brown but play Reid. What's your thinking on that score, hellfire?

For the record I would like to state that I would include Stanley in my team noted earlier if I thought there was a chance of him being selected.

I fear there is no chance.

I think the Crows will let Petrenko debut. Has had a great pre-season and can probably play off the HBF or small forward. If Porpz doesnt pull up then this is more definite.

All pre-season i have thought Porplyzia would pull up for R1. Porpz is one of my favourite players going around at the moment. Reckon he is a nuggety in and under who is just as damaging as a small forward. Would love him in my team.

But he has not done any contact training yet and has not played in any practice games or intra-clubs. So hard to see him going straight into the side.

We will probably also get our first look at Taylor Walker who has been impressive. Didnt play in the NAB cup due to an injury in the first round, but was good in all the challenge games kicking multiple goals. Crows may actually go a 3 man tall forward line. Hentshell will return from a few years out as well.

For the Pies.

B: Toovey, Presti, Harry O (if right to play, otherwise Goldsack)
HB: Shaw, Brown, Clarke
C: Maxwell, Swan, Thomas
HF: Didak, Cloke, Medhurst
F: Davis, Rocca, Anthony

R: Fraser, Pendlebury, O'Bree

I: Wood, Beams, Lockyer, Cook.

There is obviously the question mark over Rocca. Hopefully he is right, but if not Reid will come into this team.

Cook is also no guarentee. I personally would much prefer to see Stanley in that position, but given Mick's refusal to play him pre-season, I can't see him getting a call up in round 1 even though his VFL form warrants it over the past fortnight.

Reid may take Cooks spot anyway but i would prefer a bit more run and Cook would be a good matchup for an Adelaide midfielder such as Reilly.

I don't think Johnson's form warrants senior selection. I would love to put Sidebottom in there, but Mick didn't give him a chance in the NAB cup GF so doubt he has done enough. Beams definitely has.

I think we'll persist with Maxwell on Scott Thompson. Nick shut him down in the final last year so can't see a reason why this won't happen again.

I'll do my usual detailed Match Preview by either next Monday or Tuesday. This one is going to be a really detailed one....much more in depth that the pre-season previews. So stay posted!

Porplyzia graces the back pages of our newspaper today, as he completed his first competitive training in a long time yesterday. He is a chance to play for West Adelaide in a trial game this weekend, and I think if he pulls up fine after that Craig will put him in the side.

Craig loves him and if he had him in the side with only one arm, I'm sure he'll include him with one good arm and one pretty good one!

Oh and Taylor has played in all of our pre season games, barring the one in Darwin :thumbsu:

How's Hentschel's form been during the pre-season CG?

Did he play a couple of SANFL games at the end of last year? I thought he might of but I would not have thought he would have been playing Round 1. Coming off an injury like that I would have thought a few more SANFL games would be warranted to get some match fitness into him.

Walker looks like a beauty though. Really looking forward to seeing him in a couple of weeks.

Hentschel played his first game of footy, since injuring his knee in August 2006, mid way through last year. He started off in the Reserves for Woodville West Torrens, played a couple of games there, before breaking through to the senior side. Unfortunately he was struck down with a couple of soft tissue injuries, as expected, but overall he looked on track for an AFL comeback this year. He would've played at least five or six SANFL games last year.

Since then he completed most of the pre season without a hitch, and in fact, pulled better results in time trials and the like than what he had recorded before he did his knee.

He has played in all of our NAB Cup and challenge games this year and has kicked 10 goals from these four matches. What pleases me most is that he doesn't look hindered at all. One of his greatest assets is his agility, but he doesn't seem to have lost that at all. He's not tentative when approaching packs, tackling, flying for marks etc. I'm just so proud of how far he has come and cannot wait for him to make his official return.

Here is my go at the RD 1 Team:

B: Maxwell, Presti, O'Brien
HB: Clarke, N.Brown, H.Shaw
C: Pendlebury, Swan, Davis
HF: Didak, Cloke, Goldsack
FF: Medhurst, Anthony, Lockyer

Followers: Fraser, Beams, Thomas
INT: Wood, Reid, Obree, Sidebottom

EMG: Stanley, McCarthy, Dawes

I like this team, but I don't understand why you'd omit Brown but play Reid. What's your thinking on that score, hellfire?

Just because of Adelaide's forward line. The only talls they have are inexperienced (so Reid should hold his own), and I think Reid can provide better rebound than Brown. And if Browny can get a late start, then hopefully he won't burn out again!

Doesn't worry me though.
