B: Voss, Hudghton, L.Fisher
HB: Gilbert, S.Fisher, Gram
C: Goddard, Ball, Fiora
HF: Gwilt, Riewoldt, Montagna
F: Harvey, Gehrig, Milne
FOLL: Ackland, Dal Santo, Powell
I/C: Rix, Thompson, Peckett, McGough
EMG: Blake, McQualter, Ferguson
IN: McGough, Rix
OUT: Maguire, Blake

We lost to Geelong last time due in part to a poor performance at stoppages. Our ruck division was not up to it, nor did we have the in and under players to contest the hard ball. The inclusions of McGough and Rix should go a fair way to addressing these problems.

When we met earlier this year - this was our team:

B: Baker, Hudghton, Voss
HB: Gram, Maguire, S.Fisher
C: Goddard, Ball, Fiora
HF: Hamill, Riewoldt, Harvey
F: Montagna, Gehrig, Murray
FOLL: Blake, Hayes, Dal Santo
I/C: Ackland, McQualter, Schwarze, Thompson
EMG: McGough, Milne, Peckett
IN: Ackland, McQualter
OUT: Koschitzke (head), Milne

Changes from last time we met:

Out: Baker, Maguire, Hamill, Murray, Schwarze, Hayes, McQualter, Blake
In: L Fisher, Gilbert, Gwilt, Milne, Rix, McGough, Peckett, Powell

The ins and outs are my opinion only, but the bolded outs are definite.

The possible inclusion of Koschitzke will be a welcome complication to my team changes. I hope he does play, but if he does, don't expect a great deal of game time - he is in dire need of match fitness and will benefit from any time on ground he can get.

I said Powell should go out but I actually didn't think about it. One of Powell, Peckett or Thompson and given Powell's recent good form probably not him.

I must have wrote his name with out of even thinking about.

Against Geelong, we need the in and under players scrabbling for the ball, we need to have designated receivers with the decision making skills and disposal skills free. If we don't have the in and under players, our skilled players get dragged into contested ball situations and are tied up. They can't get the ball away. The game gets played on their (Geelong's) terms. We need to stamp our authority on the match by making them play our game.

Personally, I think they will fancy themselves against us and this mindset will open up the match for us. If we get on top, they will close it down. That's where the in and under players come into it. First hands to the ball or tying it up if they get it, keep Dal Santo, Ball and Harvey free, get McGough, Powell and Thompson in there, when the ball comes out, we can take it away.

Milburn fell into the hole last time and killed our forward thrusts. We need to nullify his effectiveness. Easier said than done, because if we match up on him we overpopulate our forward line. If Riewoldt goes into the hole, then he is effectively one and a half kicks out and not much of a scoring option. If Kosi plays, maybe he can be used to negate Milburn by taking high contested marks where Milburn will not be a good match. Ackland or Rix might do a similar job. Roo may be given the freedom to show his versatility having a run on the ball then going forward when the match up is right.

The last game against Geelong was probably the worst game of football that I've seen for the year. It was a combination of negative tactics by Geelong and our insistence on kicking the ball to a 4 on 1 contest every time we went forward.

Having said that they thoroughly deserved their win because they smashed in the clearances. I'd bring Rix in because he will have the best chance of negating the influence of King and Ottens at the stoppages. Gehrig will be in for a hard day at the office on Scarlett and because of that I reckon we need to leave Riewoldt in the forward line again. I can see the merit in moving him to the backline but I don't think this is the game to do it.
