Balta looking good back?

Q1 just done. I missed the first part of the game.

Quick observations - we aren’t giving the Pies any time and space. More than a few HTB decisions as a result.

Ball movement I50 isn’t fluent. Pies getting numbers back.

Like our tackling intent. Going at the body. A great tackle laid by Stack and Balta.

Liked Menadues game, trying to take it on. However, the space and time he is getting to make decisions won’t be there at AFL level.

Liked Ross’s game. Nothing stand out-ish, just right place right time sort of stuff.

RCD has been okay. Can see why he could be a gun. It’s the nuances such as body position, when and how to use his frame around stoppages etc that he isn’t as developed as Ross et al.

Baker been good. CCJ been good - more nimble than I thought.

Turner looks like he has the ability to hit a target. Been left alone a lot on the wing.

Garth been general like. Last man back. Fitness wise seems good compared to Balta who seemed to be blowing a bit that quarter. Neither has really been under pressure as the ball has lived more in Richmond’s half. Poor I50 entry for Pies have helped.

Q2 done and I’ve had to tap out.

That quarter Pies kicked three straight, but for the most part were against the grain and certainly not fluent. Two were from crumbs after an aerial contest which must not be pleasing for Fly.

The few times Pies got the ball forward was from (imo) dubious free kicks against. Not necessarily howlers, but those I think wouldn’t be called most times (from my vantage point at least).

After Q1 where Pies had no time and space due to our pressure, I expected them to possess the ball a bit more and be more methodical moving it forward. This occurred only twice by my count. Credit to the intent but also the structure defensively.

Out of CCJ, Marbs and Soldo that all rucked, Soldo got more taps. But for mine didn’t do enough with it. CCJ on the other hand had a few nice taps to advantage. Soldo seems to make space tap it but doesn’t co-ordinate with mids well enough and so resulted in a hack kick forward or another stoppage.

Thought Bolton was good throughout that quarter, running through the middle. Didn’t get his hands on it a ton, but was creative when he got it. Made a few really good decisions.

I like Naish’s Q2. Linked up well and used the ball relatively well on either side. He probably had it the same amount of times and in similar positions to Morro, but used it better. Think the VFL is a level and style that won’t promote his abilities like the AFL will.

Towno looks like an added addition to the inside mid brigade. Did some nice things, and ask has retained some of that forward nous.

Stack and Egg-Smith look like good players. Eggy more advanced, but Stack seems the more likely type. Think Stack transitions into a wing or midfield role by the end of the season.

Garth and Noah only had one real contest. It was Garth who spoiled, put pressure on and then professionally saw the ball out of bounds. We are still playing a structured defence meaning that when Goldsack led up to the ball (only lead up I can remember hit from either side) it was Egg-Smith who took over as it was around the 50m arc after a stoppage.

All in all, great pressure, great I’m the contest, great structures. Pretty dominant performance.

Any questions for the half I saw, fire away.

Garth done for the day. Ice on left quad. Copped a corkie going back with the flight at the start of the third qtr. Hobbled on for about 10 mins before he came to the bench and they iced it about five mins after that.
I mean
Thanks for the update:thumbsdown:

73-42 thanks to some questionable umpiring
Naish is getting enough of it but butchering it
Towna excellent
Nice bit of play early in the Q by Ross streaming through the middle and hitting up Moore wth a 45m bullet resulted in a snag
