I'm Cas until I die !!
Is friday's practice match at Princes Park or Optus Oval? How much is admission? And have we got a full strength squad in?

Basically I'm in Melbourne this weekend and wondering if it is worthwhile going to the match..!

St Kilda is taking few risks with its squad for Friday's NAB Challenge match against the Western Bulldogs at Princes Park.

Key players Aaron Hamill (calf tightness), Justin Koschitzke (patella tendonitis) and Brett Voss (ankle) have all been left out of the 28-man squad to take on the Bulldogs.

Koschitzke and Voss - who rolled his ankle against West Coast in a NAB Challenge match in Mandurah last Saturday - both trained with the main squad at Moorabbin on Wednesday but Hamill was restricted to light duties with other injured players.

The 28-year-old disrupted scar tissue in his calf during the NAB Cup opening round loss to Collingwood and will be sidelined for another 1-2 weeks.

St Kilda is reportedly reluctant to risk Hamill in the club's next NAB Challenge match - against the Sydney Swans in Newcastle on 18 March.

With all AFL players given the final weekend off before the premiership season commences, Hamill's only chance for a hitout before the season proper would be with VFL affiliate Casey Scorpions that weekend.

St Kilda starts its 2006 premiership campaign in the season-opener against West Coast at Subiaco on Thursday, 30 March.

St Kilda squad: Justin Peckett, Xavier Clarke, Andrew Thompson, Fergus Watts, Lenny Hayes, Fraser Gehrig, Steven Baker, Leigh Montagna, Nick Riewoldt, Luke Ball, Jason Gram, Stephen Powell, Sam Gilbert, Allan Murray, Matthew Ferguson, Aaron Fiora, Barry Brooks, Sam Fisher, Nick Dal Santo, Cain Ackland, Michael Rix, Matt Maguire, Andrew McQualter, James Gwilt, Phil Raymond, Robert Harvey, Troy Schwarze, Stephen Milne.

Western Bulldogs squad: Travis Baird, Shane Birss, Matthew Boyd, Adam Cooney, Daniel Cross, Nathan Eagleton, Cameron Faulkner, Daniel Giansiracusa, Lindsay Gilbee, Chris Grant, Ryan Griffen, Mitchell Hahn, Ryan Hargrave, Brian Harris, Brad Johnson, Kieran McGuiness, Jordan McMahon, Will Minson, Adam Morgan, Dale Morris, Robert Murphy, Sam Power, Farren Ray, Matthew Robbins, Wayde Skipper, Rohan Smith, Peter Street, Scott West.

PS Princes Park was Optus Oval

Ithink it is about $10 to get in.

Start at 4.00pm.

Would be interesting just to see goal umpires giving free kicks to a full forward when the ball is 150 metres away and the other stupid rules that the idiotic AFL have put in place at 5 minutes notice.

Cheers.

Did you know that the AFL will be trialling allowing the two boundary umpires and two goal umpires to adjudicate and pay free kicks (as well as the three field umpires)?

Seven umps join forces to decide all

IN PERHAPS the most radical umpiring experiment of recent times, boundary and goal umpires will assist the field umpires in making decisions in tomorrow afternoon's practice match between St Kilda and the Western Bulldogs at Princes Park.

Multi-skilling trial for umpires

Sportal for afl.com.au

The AFL will run a limited trial of umpire multi-skilling in a NAB Challenge match this weekend which will test using boundary umpires and goal umpires to award free kicks.

Under the trial, boundary and goal umpires will be empowered to pay free kicks that are not able to be seen by the field umpire.

The goal and boundary umpires, who have been especially trained for the trial, will be restricted to making obvious "matter of fact" decisions such as throwing the ball, push in the back, illegal blocking and head-high tackles.

Anderson said the umpires will be wearing microphones to help each other in the match.

this is prob the worst football board there is. no discussion happens, and when it does, its all old news that has already been done to death on all of the other boards. get your acts together.

That's why they call it a practice match..... Reiwoldt is a gun and will be better for the hitout. I wouldn't be despairing overly Saints fans. Early days.... by the way though, how good are Murphy and Griffen!!! :)

Who would have thought someone called Vas Deferens would make so much sense? ;)

I haven't read Saintsational yet but I'd like to think our supporters aren't getting too down. We weren't great today but I'd be worried if we were playing flawless footy at this stage. The biggest story of the day for us was without doubt Riewoldt's kicking but it's something that can be rectified. Unlike a Stewie Loewe that was a terrible kick for goal and managed to turn it around, Nick's gone from a fine goalkicker to someone that lacks confidence.

Grammy was good and is making a strong case to replace Aussie Jones. I think today's game does go to show how important Hamill and Kosi are to the make up of our team. Max and Vossy would have been ideal candidates for Murphy when he started to get on top as well. The other thing to take out of the match was that despite the youngsters being so exciting, the old guard like Harvey, Peckett and Thompson are still crucial.

Little effect from AFL umpire experiment
Sydney Morning Herald
March 10, 2006 - 4:49PM

The much-anticipated AFL umpiring experiment resulted in only half a decision during the Western Bulldogs-St Kilda practice match at Princes Park.

For the first time, boundary and goal umpires had the power to pay frees.

But apart from a simultaneous free paid by a boundary and field umpire during the second term, the trial had no effect.

Privately, AFL officials thought the new provision would mean a maximum of three or four decisions during the game.

Western Bulldogs coach Rodney Eade and his Saints counterpart Grant Thomas said the trial was not noticeable, but would like it to continue in some form.

"That's still worth a try, because it might only be two or three a game, but if they get it right ... why can't the boundary umpires at least help adjudicate?" Eade said.

Thomas said it would be useful if the goal and boundary umpires were able to indicate to a blindsided field umpire that an infringement had happened.

Eade was more interested in how the field umpires seemed to be interpreting the league's raft of rule changes for this season.

Like Collingwood coach Mick Malthouse, he is concerned that physical contact remains an accepted part of the game.

"I think Mick Malthouse mentioned the other week, that you give me any sort of touch and it's a free kick - it really is difficult," Eade said.

"We have to be careful as a game, we still like to have a contest.

"I think the new rules are going to be okay - maybe a bit of `tiggy-touchwood' (pedantic) at times."

Two frees against Bulldogs veterans caught the eye - Chris Grant gave away a free kick and a 50m penalty for what looked to be a legitimate attempt to spoil a mark.

Also, Scott West was penalised for deliberate out of bounds with what rugby fans would have called a perfect "kick to touch", booting the ball out of defence to the boundary on the wing when there were no free team-mates up the field.

"His intent was there, wasn't it? - he had no other option," Eade said of West.

"I'm in favour of that (new rule), if you're good enough to keep the ball in play, I'm okay."

But Eade was not so sure about the Grant decision.

"I will probably ask for clarification, because I thought Chris was committed to the contest," he said.

"It was probably a free kick, but I don't know if it was late."

Dogs nab win over Saints
6:48:00 PM Fri 10 March, 2006
Paul Gough

With Aaron Hamill and Justin Koschitzke sidelined and Riewoldt struggling, the Saints' attack was impotent until the final quarter when they finally came to life to show why they are rated so highly.

After Brad Johnson missed a shot which would have given the Dogs a six-goal lead to seal the game, the Saints slammed on the next six goals with the inspirational Robert Harvey kicking two and Fraser Gehrig booting two, including one off the ground to give the Saints a shock lead at the 24-minute mark.

However the Bulldogs fought back to score the win their play overall deserved with the goal that regained them the lead fittingly coming from best man on the ground Daniel Giansiracusa with a left foot snap before Rohan Smith sealed the game at the 28-minute mark with a 50-metre goal on the run.
