Yeah I'm in the ''give Cheesy a chance'' brigade too. I also might be in the minority here but I reckon Hine was/is a gun recruiter and we will miss him. In general he never had a lot of high-end picks to work with. Yeah he went for a few left-field plays but i think you have to if you are shopping in the bargain basement arena.
All we are say-ing
Is give Cheese a chance

John Lennon was ahead of all of us. Visionary really.

Not noted for having a ‘big engine’. Last 6 months hasn’t increased it.

Maybe but whatever happens we need him back to his best. His speed and agility change our whole forward line. I’m hoping Rambeau is the one for more midfield time. Playing hurt apparently but when he was in the middle a few times in the finals he looked great.

If you look at the list that sr36 posted. 2 are successes. 2 are failures and 3 are unknowns. From the 4 players we know have been successes or failures its a 50% success rate. That's well above the 20% success rate of the overall drafts. The only issue is that the number of players (4) probably isn't statistically significant. But whatever.
I don't know other lists well enough to know how many shots they've taken, but it feels the same higher rate at other clubs.

And not surprising that an ex cats recruiter has come to us and already gone down that path twice in a year. As they've got some rippers who were overlooked as kids but kept developing at lower leagues: Stewart, Atkins, Close, Mannagh

Cats have no more premierships than Collingwood in the past 15 years

Different discussion, but they just played in a GF having been given the worst collection of draft picks of any team over the last 15 years and without any players who they had priority access to. Their current team is the product of outstanding recruiting and development.

The other contenders had stints at the bottom where they acquired stars and/or got some stars through draft matching.

P.S I missed kelly as another fantastic mature age newbie for them.

Roan Steele - Too early to tell

Bytel - Fail

Sullivan - Good depth

Dean - Fail

Carmichael - Fail

Ash Johnson - Fail

Noble - Success

Mihocek - Huge sucess

Shade - Fail

From the last 10 years.

Bit of a mixed bag really
Don't forget Ned Long!

He needs to overcome his issues, focus and work hard. Tank and consistency being improved are required for my wish. I don’t want much.
I think the conditioning focus for Bobby will always be strength above endurance. And if they're both a bit low for mid it's unlikely he gets there. (I have no idea on his endurance running)

What is the criteria for the list? Shade and Bytel had both played AFL. Smit and Steene aren’t here. Long? Played with Hawthorn but doesn’t appear. I think we have done very well with late picks. Definition of success is also interesting. I find the view that a late pick playing a single AFL is a success to be light on. Ash played 27 games and almost cemented a senior place I cannot decide success or failure.
Not sure Ned would have counted as a mature age pick when he was selected, he was 20 at the time.
Iliro would still have been 18 at the time we drafted him, think Oscar would have been 19 at the start of 2023 when picked up as an SSP.
At what age do players become mature age?

22-23 I think people see them as mature agers. But realistically 24-25 you’d think

Fair enough but recruiting and ultimate success are topics that are very closely related.

Probably around what you would expect but Mihocek and Noble would have well exceeded expectations. I also think that Carmichael had something to offer but he was unlucky with concussion. Ash has a lot of talent but not matched by application and the desire needed for this level. Roan looks a more than reasonable chance of at least being some handful depth methinks.

Agree with all that. Roan looks highly likely to succeed imo. Works hard, good endurance and has very tidy skills

You could classify anyone who gets taken in anything other than their draft year as a mature ager if you were so inclined.

Yep. I'm really just referring to blokes in their 20s recruited off the back of high performance in senior footy. At the moment with not many being recruited that way, I think you get really good value. It'd change if all clubs were taking a few that way - but many clubs rarely take them.
