i dont wanan sound like a whinger.. but Victorian refs seem to have something against the swannies? we give away the most free kicks in the comp, and the majority of them are rubbish. in the previous rounds, barry hall has been targeted, were robbed of the bombers game when mcveigh should have kicked that goal.

I agree 100%. The Swans get pinged for things that other clubs wouldnt get pinged for. I actually think that the Swans are one of the more disciplined teams in the competition.

expect to be ridiculed by victorian bigots who for some reason find the term "refs" an insult.
I've been complaining about this aspect of the game for years. Its the only way to explain the skewed free kick counts every year. Some umpires seem to watch the swans players through a microscope while ignoring blatant infractions by the opposition. How about the in the back to Ted Richards by Fletcher in the 1st half? That was a free under the old rules, let alone the zero tolerance rubbish they are peddling this year.

What makes this even worse is for some reason the other teams supporters (mainly Vicroian teams) always complain saying that the Swans get the easy time with the umpires. They clearly have no idea what they are talking about as the Swans get pinged alot more than most teams and most of those free kicks against us are for things which are minor to say the least and should be ignored by the umpires.

I'm not sure I'd go as far as to say they're prejudiced.

One thing I've noticed this year, though, is that all the power forwards are getting caned by the umps over this hands in the back interpretation. They've brought in all these new interpretations to help them, and yet it's players like Fevola, Brown, Lloyd, Richardson, Hall and Nietz that are getting hammered the most.

That mark and goal which Hall had taken off him was a good example. In a similar contest on the wing with two smallish players the pushing in the side which is supposedly still legal seems to be seen (sometimes). But when it comes in to an isolated backman against a large forward it's almost as if the umps are waiting to pay a free against them.

I don't know why this is. Perhaps any contact from a larger player is more visible? That's all I can think of so early on a Monday morning. But it's annoying because all the advantages of having a large target to shoot at on the forward line are currently being erroded by this fanatical witchunt the AFL commision seems to have against contested footy. :thumbsd:

a relevent article:

No relief for Barry Hall
04 June 2007 Herald-Sun
Tim Morrissey
AFL umpires' boss Jeff Gieschen has told Sydney he knows Barry Hall is getting stiffed by the whistleblowers just because he's Barry Hall.

Gieschen's admission to the Swans coaching staff two weeks ago has left coach Paul Roos scratching his head as to why nothing is being done.
Roos' frustration boiled over after Saturday night's one-point loss to Essendon at the SCG.
"Now we've got this (umpiring) controversy that's overshadowing the game, which is really sad," Roos said.
"We spoke to Jeff Gieschen a couple of weeks ago again and brought it up. Jeff agreed with our sentiments but once again nothing changes.
"When you speak to Jeff, he admits Hally is not getting the free kicks.
"What do you do? It's frustrating for Barry, no question, and he's been terrific in his discipline and the way he's going about his footy."
At the start of 2004 Gieschen admitted several umpires were "counselled and coached" after failing to give the Swans spearhead free kicks.

Why doesn't one of you put a sticky on your board saying something like "they are called umpires, not refs"

It would seriously help your cred if you are going to complain about them.

Fine. Do as you please.

I live in Sydney and like the Swans. I cheered louder then anyone when Leo Barry took a mark about 30 metres from my seat in 2005.

I want AFL to continue to succeed in Sydney and to me these little things do matter. AFL has been played for over 150 years and umpired by umpires. It wouldn't be hard to use the correct terminology.

sorry umpires*

its just frustrating to see games decided on lousy umpring week in week out.

Is it just me or is this the third time in recent years Geishen has admitted that either Hall or the club has been screwed by the umpires?? I believe he was quoted after the second instance that the umpires were being coached over the issue. Fat lot of good the coaching seems to have done. The repeated nature of this 'we stuffed up, but oh well' attitude is what breeds conspiracy theories in sports about fixed matches and pre-determined results. Lets hope we do not head down that path.

And just a note to all the people so quickly jumping on the term ref'....with the increased use of terms like catch, quarterback etc in the game it won't be long before they are termed as being ref's and some of these swans supporters will look like visionaries.

Umpires, refs, officials who gives a sh1t?

As far as the visionaries thing goes.... I don't think you're too far off the mark there...

I do recall a few years ago that Brisbane, Collingwood and Fremantle all started chanting a long droning.... "freeeeeeeeooo" "liiiiiiions" "cooooollllllliiiiiiiiingwood" around the ground.

Who invented that? ----Oh yes.... that's right .... us 'stupid' swans supporters.

Syyyyyyyydneeeey.... Syyyyyydney.

err prove it?

First memory I had of it being used in the AFL was in the 96 finals series. Any other clubs use predate that?

1996 Round 22 against West Coast in front of 33k in an absolute deluge to be exact! :D

And to answer you question. Erm. No. None that I can think of. I can still remember the perplexed commentators at the time going on about how we sounded like a soccer crowd.

Indeed. Round 22, 1996. Spot on...

That was the FIRST time it was used in an AFL match. Freo, Collingwood and Lions only caught on about 5-7 years later.

Eagles have been doing it for much, much longer than that. When I became a member twelve years ago it was already common practice.

I remember being on the Hill at the SCG in the 1974 (I think, it was the Ashes series in which the Poms called Cowdrey out of retirement) hearing the crowd chant "Lillllllllleeeeeeeee" at about the same pace as the "Syyyyyyydneeeey". I also remember the chant earlier in the day of "Blood Blood Blood" as Lillee and Thomo came running in. I am not sure that football can claim the chant as its own. I should imagine that simialrly paced chants have been doing the English football rounds (and no doubts others) for years.

WTF? No way...

Not to the magnitude of swans fans, surely.

I remember the commentators commenting that that's the first time they'd heard it.
