its bad luck. once we get in it we could be a chance. but to lose to the eventual premier again and again is unlucky imo.
Anyway we can arrange to play ourselves in the prelims next year?

Maybe it's just me, but I thought we did have the team closest to being a "dud team" (if there is such a team in a preliminary final) in each such years.
2004 : Yes, Port won the h&a season, but most will have considered us lucky to not have to play Brisbane in the preliminary final (Brisbane smashed us by 80 points in the qualifying final - and had a certain streak going...). The fourth team that year was Geelong (4th after h&a - we were 3rd).
2005 : Sydney were 3rd after the h&a (we were 4th) suprising many experts to just make it into the top 4. The other teams in the prelminary final were Adelaide (1st) and West Coast - 2nd).
2008 : Geelong are the best team in the AFL, even if they lost the GF. I will not believe anyone claiming that we were unlucky not to play them in the prelminary final. We did beat Hawthorn earlier this year (we lost against the Doggies twice)...

Very sad, but very true.
I think very soon teams will be begging to play us in a prelim.
