1. Chelsea - Spent £252.165m, recouped £46.825m, net £205.34m
Biggest spenders by a mile, but half of that has been in the past six months. They will want to be dominating everything in the next few years to justify that spending
2. Newcastle - Spent £192.63m, recouped £95.93m, net 96.7m
Surprise runner up to me, and although they did start outside the premier league they would be disappointed that they haven't managed to win anything in the last decade
3. Manchester United - Spent £165.975m, recouped £72.475m, net £93.5m
Value for money in terms of trophies, although they they have done really well with their youth setup. I'd expect they won't be able to replicate that success bringing that many young players through the system, and they will have to spend to maintain their position. I'd also say the emergence of Chelsea will lift the bar in terms of spending for United.
4. Liverpool - Spent £162.115m, recouped £69.515m, net £92.6m
Huge disappointment for the scouser given their spending, and given the success of their youth system bring through their best players for nought. They have won the odd trophy, but have gone nowhere in ten years in relation to the league
5. Tottenham - Spent £118.825m, recouped £39.797m, net £79.028m
Joke of a return for the amount of spending they have done, although it is hard to understand the hatred the Spurs fans have for Sugar and Levy given that they generally have made plenty of funds available for the team
6. Arsenal - Spent £148.89m, recouped £96.519m, net £52.371m
Excellent return for their money. One thing they have been prepared to do is lose good players for good money.
7. Leeds - Spent £139.605m, recouped £112.945m, net £26.66m
Where has the money gone. The club has gone from the extreme of prudent managament in the early years of the prem, to where they are now. Still not a bad net outlay in relation to the others, but the quality of their squad is a good reflection of that.
8. Blackburn - Spent £135.678m, recouped £114.26m, net £21.418m
Despite this season I still reckon Blackburn are a good example of how to run a club. Openb chequebook in the early years got them a title and a relegation but they have come back from that strongly.
All of these figures came from the Daily Mirror, and cover from the start of the premier league to currently. It would be interesting to break them up further into 3-5 year periods, I am sure that would tell a tale, particularly in regards to Chelsea, Blackburn and Leeds.
