brian waldron has publically stated that we won't be drafting or recruiting any player that is not capable of playing 100 games for the club, all things being equal.
whilst i agree with this principal i don't think the club should pass over players if they can add some imediate value in the next two seasons if the above criteria can't be met, especially with late draft picks. i notice on the official forum that people are dismissing the likes of fletcher, cummings, o'farrell because they are short term solutions yet the young players that they suggest may not even play 1 game in the seniors never mind 100.
hopefully there are some out of contract players that we don't yet know about that the club are persuing, otherwise it seems to be slim pickings in the pre season draft. if there is no player that meets the criteria would we look at cummings to fill a gap in our forward line. i know he has quite a few short comings fat, lazy, injury prone but he can still kick goals. adrian fletcher is going to get the ball 25+ times a game and could be useful in the midfield rotation. o'farrell has height on his side and was regarded highly by the hawks a couple of years ago he still might be worth a punt.
last year we got brett voss with the first pick in the pre season draft and whilst he is a usefull player and will probably play 100 games for us, his quality of footballer in the pre season draft is probably as good as it gets, so why not fill a few holes with a cummings, fletcher or another player of their ilk.
